  • How about putting 2 smaller Wankel engines on each side on top of rotor...?

  • too much noise...but cool

  • gay

  • this is just a begining..imagine that after 20 yrs or less

  • Is the hovering/flying AI controlled/assisted? are there any sensors collecting data to determine position/orientation?

  • that looks so fun :D

  • So say i bought this jetpack... Do the two guys running along side the jetpack come with it? If So...I'd better start saving :D

  • is cool to see the first models for our Jetpacks, probably in 50 years we will perfect these prototypes.. or just remember our first vehicle motors prototypes 50 years ago.. "what impressive change right".

  • They gonna have to fly this thing around the world a few times without the engine stalling or any other issues for me to even think about buying this.

  • looks ugly, and do i always need 2 friends with me ?

People will never going to use a flying machine as car or something.

will never be allowed and not possible with our brains.

  • Humans,So Fuck'n limited!

  • Guys y would you buy this???

It has a 5 gallon gas tank and a price tag of 100,000

And not to mention how unstable it is you saw how the people pretty much had to puppy guard the thing straight

It's maximuim height is around 6 feet, thous defeating the point of even being a jet pack

  • Hey, I want one for me... Very good!

  • It will cost about $100,000.00 and they plan to make 500 per year for the next 3 years.

  • When can i buy one and how much will it cost?

  • my neighbor across the road likes to run a gas powered leaf blower on Sunday mornings.

    Sounds just like this video.

I would like to hover one of these over his roof someday. Have to love modern technology.

    Well done, congratulations!

  • I'd like to see Jet pack Thai Boxing!

    With Midgets....

Hey its the first iteration its not bad, it will improve a lot.

Look at cars like the one in "The Color Purple" compare that to today.

Still jet Pack Thai Boxing with midget shoulder Jockeys throwing spears would be cool I'd prefer it to say .... Slamball.

The applications for sport are endless.

  • How many knots can you travel at an altitude of say, 1000ft ?

  • Our design target is 55 knots

  • @MartinJetPack great effort Much greener and better than real Jet thrusters.

Good on you for doing the Math.

  • I agree with all the people saying this cool, but really just a small aircraft of some kind. It's not really a jetpack / rocketpack / flightpack until you can walk around while wearing it. Until then, you might as well add a seat for comfort, and a roll cage for safety and call it a personal aircraft.

  • Oversize 250lb leaf blower for washing windows on buildings.

  • My main concern would be the additional expense in employing two assistants to run alongside you everywhere you go.

  • Would be nice to see a wilder outdoor video without the 2 people folowing the martinjetpack for security reasons,...

  • LoL it's a strap-on helicopter

  • not a helicopter...helicopter is a moving wing vehicle while this thing uses thrust to elevate.

  • helicopters also use thrust. This thing doesn't seem to have jet engines. At least I can't see anything like a jet coming out of the engine. I'd also think it'd be too hot or dangerous to stand that near if those were actual jet engines.

  • The rotors on a helicopter are wings that develope lift as they rotate...not thrust. I guess your right about this thing, the fans in them are under the same principle but because the wings are so short they have to move extremely fast(rotate) to generate the lift. The wings on the helicopter are very long and don't need to move as fast.

  • Cool vehicle, but I don't like that they call it a jetpack. It's a rotor vehicle. It makes a really awesome, compact helicopter, but a bulky, stupid looking jetpack.

  • I agree. It's neat, but nowhere near practical for... anyone really. Consumer, military.. it's too loud, too bulky, too touchy on controls... not to mention dangerous for the typical.

  • @goldencricket I agree, its not a Jet pack. It is a small dual rotor heli. Very cool though.

  • I say four rotor, pilot sits under in tubular roll cage, fly by wire, light chomoly construction or aluminum, carbon, electric power,Quad rotors are very stable platforms,2 rotors are very difficult to control, must have advanced fly by wire.

  • To the people asking about the two traing wheels, ask yourself what are you doing with your life? i say Kiwi's can fly, keep up the good work boys. hay grandpa just tune down the hearing aid

  • dose it come with the 2 dudes that chase it around like a 4 year old with training wheels?

  • how many time cam he fly?

  • He can go for as long as he has fuel. But apparently it can go 30 miles in 30 minutes on 5 gallons of gasoline

  • I think your asking the wrong question. more like how far can the 2 guys run holding their hands up?That would calculate the approximate distance it could travel

  • Exactly how high up can this go?

  • 2.5 KM

  • Even if someone made a real jet pack, the only use for it would be highly specialised. Like rescue someone from a burning high rise. And no, it would be to expensive to have construction workers using this when they build high buildings.

Some rich ppl would probably also buy it just for fun.

  • On top of all that, it's LOUD!

  • so sick...it reminds me of my vacuum

  • Do the two dudes running along side come with each purchase?

  • lmao i said the same thing before i scrolled down funny as chit what a pos huh

  • They talk about how great these $100k jetpacks are. It will take an average man 30 miles on 5 gallons of gas.

Why the hell haven't I seen a video of this jetpack yet where there aren't people having to run along side of it to make sure it doesn't crash. I will keep looking, until then, this is just and expensive hunk of junk.

  • that aint no fuckin jetpack its 2 really big fans runnin on a 4 stroke

  • That suck because its just TOO BIG.

  • Big, yes. But the other jet packs have a technology very different from this one, they use H2O2 thats expensive. I suppose that this model use gas.

    I like this design.

  • They spent over a million dollars on this...it's powered by a 50hp rotary engine.

  • Some controlled test flights to show proof of concept. We'd love to fly this to the full altitude, but we will reserve that for after we have have exhausted all planned testing.

Should've read: some VERY CAREFUL test to see if it can fly. We'd love to fly it higher than 4 feet but we can't (too dangerous!) However if you would like to buy it now, you can, it's ONLY $100,000

  • How bout sell it to hillbillies and pollocks ,and make them log and video their experience and that could double as test flights, and a good chance they win the 100 grand on Americas funniest home videos

  • Cool. And to the commenters below, the guys on the side were not directing it, their hands were about the metal, presumably in case the flyer got in trouble.

Pretty darn noisy, though, and not exactly the backpack sized thing one would like :-)

    Really excellent progress.

  • hmm pendulum effect aint helping .. locate the cg high high above the thrust line check the hiller vz-1

  • very well said!

  • I would love to know how long the total flight duration is?

  • Hi

you need a crane and bungy cord better still have u considdered contact the inventer of the wheelchair that stands on two wheels and climbs stairs, he is a multi millionare and a world leading expert on gyroscopes if any aircraft/flying machine needed the assistance of a few gyroscopes and a computer its your aircraft. i can find his cdetails if u want

  • but that would be sweet if they made them silent and super easy to controller and added awesome gun... a fleat of them in war would be fucking scary lol

  • Nope definitely not a wind block... they're in a wooded area... no wind from the sides anyway. Besides, they'd be crazy to try that thing in ANY wind, a gust down into that clearing would easily take it for a ride, probably kill the kid and wreck the machine.

Sadly, this is nightmare for noise pollution... I can't imagine the ear plugs we'd all have to wear if a fleet of these were air-bound during rushhour. Airborn-commuting is a pipe dream that will never exist due to safety.

  • I assume people thought hundreds of 2 ton hunks of metal rolling around was impossible too when the car was invented

  • With the obvious difference being that land-based vehicles have improved due to engine effiency... this "jet pack" is already using a modern engine... are you suggesting the weight and effiency can be increased to a similar amount? :p

  • thats true and im sure they didnt think those 2 ton hunks of metal could ever pass 200 mph either. i could see this going somewhere... its like an ultralight, but different

  • A worthy example for the kiwi ingenuity hall of fame. Good on ya' mates!

  • Fuck yea go kiwis. Go the all blacks hehehe!!!!

  • What the hell is this?

  • So this thing ia just a big toy? I mean, that's all it can practically be used for.

  • Excuse me? A big toy?

I guess cars are just big toys too, huh?

  • Yea a big toy for the yanks to buy in the millions. Go kiwis.

  • coool, problem is price, 100 grand...well ill start saving to buy one for cristmas in 2015, if i dont spent money in beer and girls!!! ja ja ja

  • Very Cool and I wish the Martin Family success in the future.

  • I'm dangerous enough in a car. Imagine what I could do with this...ooo i so want one.

  • Damn I bet gardeners can't wait to get their hands on this baby.

  • ok, i understand what they are doing.

they are taking orders, u have to deposit 10 000 dollars, but u will receive your flying lawnmower in 2009, at the earliest.

if u cancel, they keep 500 dollars.

    CALL THE POLICE !

    :D

  • completely unusable device, it's unstable, i don't understand why this guy went public with this piece of crap, it's far too early.

  • Probably to show that there is still a future in this technology. Going public might spark interest from private investors willing to see the project taken to the next level. I'd be curious to see if this type of hover craft were to get refined and mass produced in our lifetime.

  • what is it good for ?

flying requires a lot more energy than driving, so it generates more pollution.

it's fun, but i don't think it will become mainstream.

and if the goal is to have fun, take a look at the awesome wing used by Yves Rossy (search this site)

  • Notice the wind block they set up. In any kind of wind this thing would be like riding a bull at the rodeo.

  • well sailing in a storm or riding a car during an earthquake isn't too good either...

though it is true that a windy day comes oftener than an earthquake..

  • That's not a wind block. I just saw the actual article about this and Glenn Martin himself stated that it's a cover so that people can't see the Jetpack.

Remember, this was in development for almost 30 years, and that area was used for tests before the project was made public.

  • Hmmm so if it starts to flip or take off those guys are gonna stop it? :P I don't think so, pretty dangerous standing next to it. Also you would think they would release a video without assistance...

  • This is awesome, Thanks for posting this! I see a lot of people here mocking this in there comments but people also mocked the first flights of the Wright Brothers and laughed at the first car too. I see unlimited possibilities for this when it's perfected.

Thank God there are people like this guy who have imagination!! I wish him well! This could be to the car what the car was to the horse.

  • thing so ugly i think like the other video its smaller an better

  • Do the flight attendants come standard or are the extra?

  • Great for a getaway vehicle. That would stuff up a police chase if you had one of these.

  • I think people should look into using more efficient electric motors and gyro's for stabilization. Cleaner, quieter, safer.

  • for safety fly this thing off a bungy jumping bridge with the bungy cord attached so if it fails you'll just bungy with it,lol!!

  • Hey, that's only a leaf-blower on steroids!

  • it's theoretical flight ceiling is over 500 feet.

  • an idea for a training rig would be to use vertically facing cameras, a computer with path tracing software, and a heads up display, so the pilot can practice figure 8's and other maneuvers with ever increasing precision

  • OK it's only a protoype. How far did the Wright Brothers fly on their contraption? This thing has potential even if we have to wait years for it to be perfected.

  • Yep, but did the Wright Bros offered to sell their contraptions for equivalence of 100K ?

    get REAL

  • OK it's only a protoype. How far did the Wright Brothers fly on their contraption? This thing has potential even if we have to wait years for it to be perfected.

BUT, they didn't offer to sell their contraption for the equivalence of 100K

  • @BarryDoig what the hell are people gona use this for? nothing....

  • Sure, it looks "fun" if by fun you mean having 2 guys follow you around all day while you hover 4 feet off the ground for 10 seconds at a time. Geezus, that thing is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Next...

  • THAT is the BEST comment yet !! Can you imagine the general public operating this thing? My GOD they still have VCR's blinking 12:00 .. HEADLINE "Martin sells first jetpack", in FUTURE NEWS " 1st jetpack owner DEAD within 20 seconds of flight" HAHA

  • Didn't the Myth Busters try this out and fail..?

  • Mythbusters are retards... They take good myths and forgo the simple and fun ways to test them - instead making ever-more copies of 'Buster' and using more ballistic gel than all of the Dallas Cheerleader's fake boobs every episode.

    Still, it's fun to watch...

  • thats awesome! i wish the jetpack concept would work in real life like it does in cartoons or somthing

  • kiwi bastards!!! U GUYS R LEGENDS!!!

  • AWESOME.

  • When's product launch, and do you have a Canadian dealer lined up yet?

If not, I'm game to try selling em...
