This is from the film the mascot. My mom was obsessed with Night Flight and used to tape them every weekend... she still has them and I am in the process of slowly putting them to DVD. This clip was one of her favorites and I just found out that everything of that she saw was only a small part of it so I ordered it for her birthday. If you want it search "Cameraman's Revenge & Other Fantastic Tales" on Amazon...it's only like 20 bucks and you get all of the guys animations
According to Wikipedia the show's creator has acquired to the rights to all the old episodes and we may see Night Flight on the T.V. and internet soon. I can't wait. This brings backs memories of staying up very late to watch the coolest things you could'nt find anywhere.
Night Flight! This show just was the coolest thing in existence back in the '80s. Freaky sh-- playing until 2 o clock in the morning. You didn't need drugs to enjoy this show... but it helped...
The full film's English title is The Mascot, The Devil's ball is a dream sequence in the middle but it is long about 12 minutes. The rest of the film is good, containing some live action of the film maker's daughter, but it doesn't have the energy of dream sequence. It was available on a DVD titled Cameraman's Revenge and Other Fantastic Tales (all works by Starewicz) but it looks like now it is only available as a download.
I am looking for the clips from a video entitled "Weird Cartoons." This Devil's Night out segment is the same animation but not the one I'm looking for. please post more, though!
The short was made by Wladyslaw Starewicz. Imdb lists it as 1934, although I had thought it was a year older. It is actually called "Fétiche" and runs three reels -- the Devil's Ball sequence takes up several minutes in the middle. It looks like this segment was repackaged as "At the Devil's Ball" as a stand-alone short, complete with English title cards, lasting about 10 minutes.
However, it is difficult to imagine such nightmarish imagery playing in any American theater at the height of the Depression, so the commercial motivations behind this version of the short are a mystery to me.
By all means, anyone who is interested needs to watch the full French version of the short (look for the Starewicz compilation), or at least the Devil's Ball version in its entirety (which I have on an old Sinister Cinema tape).
Also, I think that what you saw on "Weird Cartoons" was an excerpt from the 1930 Charley Bowers short "It's a Bird" (a junkyard employee goes to Africa to find a metal-eating bird to help eat some of his scrapmetal). If you don't already have it, please check out the Lobster DVD of Charley Bowers. It represents an *almost* complete collection of his extant work.
does anyone remember the short where a guy builds a life sized rat rap and then commits suicide in/on it? i would kill to see that again.
