A pretty good attempt at making a complex book into a movie. Richards is great as Lyra. I would have replaced Kidman with Tilda Swinton. CGI could have been a lot better, IMHO.
Asrael is far too fatherly in the movie. In the book, he's callous to the point of being a mere cold acquaintence to Lyra who treats her as a tool to be used. Quoting the book: "You're my father, aren't you?" "Yes, and so what?" Quite different. From what I've seen, I'm very hesitant to see the movie, though I'm sure the actors and effects team did their best.

Isn't it ironic that on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, December 7th, that this movie is released. It's message is that witches are good, the church is bad, and in the end God dies! Do your children really need to see that?
Got a great life, thank you! Spent the day on the beach with my family as oppossed to sitting in a dark room watching a subgrade Narnia. Your choice, I prefered watching all that God has made for us. Amazing sunset!! Thanks for the reminder though, you too!!
Yes! Children do need to see this kind of movies. They have to get a perspective of life! You can't just tell them that witches are bad, that God is good, and that the church always does the right thing! Right?
'Cause sometimes it's the opposite! I'm glad that my parents let me read his dark materials when I was twelve! Get a Life!
Got a great life thank you! Spent the day on the beach with my family and recognizing all that God has made and appreciating it. Thanks for the reminder though, you too!
Well, if you think that god made everything... and appriciate it, why don't appriciate Philip Pullman too? God created him and his stories too... or was that another overnatural force?
It's great that you appriciate reminders... but only if you do understand what the reminder says. Right?
The biggest difference between religious conformity and true spiritual enlightenment is the process of existing in each. The road to true spiritual enlightenment is completely individual, you don't have to conform to anyone's idea of what a "spiritual" human being should be. In fact - quite the contrary. One of the first things to be learned is that perception is reality, and so everyone's road to spiritual enlightenment is completely different.
Parents force kids to believe in there religion. If you don't want your kid to watch this because the child knows this is PURE FICTION movie then go ahead. It'll be a good movie and the child will know that the movie is FICTION and theres barely and fact in it. Chrisitians have there own advertisements of belief aswell.
I agree there's no point over-reacting - it's just a film. My God was strpped naked and crucified so he's not going to get his loincloth in a twist over a movie. But I think it is really important to talk about this film - or more importantly the books because Pullman did write them to undermine children's faith and parents should defend what they value for their children. There's a big difference between forcing children and giving them a valid choice. See my video at light2north.
I'm really excited to see this movie. I want to know how they manage to depict the theme while trying to save themselves from angry Catholics. Because, it's not going to work. In my opinion, in terms of dealing with angry Christians, it's better to just go with the theme of it being anti-religious, or not go into it at all. But I will be VERY upset if they do not go into the main theme of religion. Pullman wrote it to be a controversial book, and so the movie should not be less so.
I've already read somewhere else that the Euro version keeps a lot that the US version censors including just doing over entire dialog and dumbing it down b/c 150 mil spent the studio is afraid of zealot fascisms keeping ppl away , but he promises it will keep a lot of analogies to the book still. so the religious don't have to worry about committing thought crimes against their imaginary friend when they see it. Is the book worth reading? I've been looking for a good read or is it too childish?
Well, I'm 38... and I just read these books and loved them. Totally riveted. They are great, fast reads with engaging characters and very interesting ideas about religion, God, evolution, etc. They're intended to be readable for young adults, but it seems like a lot of adults read them as well. The third won a prestigious British book award for ALL books -- it was the first book in the "children's" category to ever win.
I HIGHLY recommend them. I read them five years ago, when I was admittedly only ten, but I've been rereading them yearly since then, and never has it grown stale. Not once have I considered it childish, in fact I have recommended it to many adults. When they say children's book I think they are saying it is kid appropriate, but can be read by adults as well. Amazing plot, fabulous ending. One of my favorite series of all time.Actually, this is what started my rebellion from organized religion.;)
Thank you I've already started reading the first book, its surprisingly good, and as far as I'm concerned it blows Mr. Potter out of the water. Thanks for the reply.
This movie is much about religion too... not only fantasy and stuff. For example: the magisterium is the church which is trying to control every part of the world...
Yeah, this movie is based off of a series of books "His Dark Materials" (which I highly recommend), so if the movie is anything like the books, then it will be very anti-religious.
They have heavily edited the screenplay of the film to accommodate the many thousands of thick fundamentalist American Christians out there of late. The books are going to be deviated from massively and therefore, the central sting of what made them so good is going to be taken away. Philip Pullman wrote them controversial. That is how they should be depicted on the big screen. Any kind of editing is not acceptable.
the little devil as you mis spelled it,is actually her soul.If your all right and there is a God i'm sure they'd be so proud!bitchin about a movie when the world is in the state it's in. yeah def top priority
maybe its the moral state of the world that excepts books like that of His Dark Material. Don't confuse the fusion of the two. The state of the world and its produce.
Just a thought: don't Christians publicly speak out against Atheists, like, since Christianity existed? Aren't there a lot of books and movies promoting Christianity?? Be fair. Even though this movie is not as anti-religion as you think, I still believe it isn't right for there to be such an uproar. Atheists have to put up with your religious crap all the time.
ok i have no real say in this, im agnostic, but if your god is so great then how come the holocaust happened? how bout wars, famine, murder, death? dosnt sound like a good guy to me.
The idea of Armageddon really gets you excited doesn't it? You get all turned on by the idea of fire and punishment. My assessment is that you are a mentally ill pervert.
I wasn't referring to Armageddon. Nor am I stating that I get all "turned on by the idea of fire and punishment" I was simply answering Patterson's question of why.
LOL I am "judging" your personality based on the things you are saying. You are not one of those "god is love" christians. You are one of those "god is going to smite you for being a non-believer" kind of christian. Are you aware that much of what Jesus taught came from Buddhism? There is even a school of thought that the REAL JESUS may have been a Buddha.
pauzhaan you are also right. you may not know that god is there but some people still do good. and just because you are not a believer it doesnt mean you cant go to heaven.... well part of it does but thats not the point. the point is.... you are part right IN MY EYES.
o man! hahaha. you poor soul. takes all ages then huh? Listen pal, i was only answer a question that someone asked as "Why would God allow evil (rape, murder, holocausts, etc) to happen." I stated my opinion on that and said that the plan is that it will all end (rape, murder, holocausts, evil, etc)
are you aware that much of what Buddhism teaches, what Christianity teaches, what....whatever other religion out there teaches to be good, love your neighbor, do on to others. Come on. Still not a good argument. But, I'd bet your going to turn and say, "well you can't say that about Jesus then."
but there is even more to Christianity over all the other religions. There's no point in explaining to all the hardened hearted people here. They seem to be hording around here like pigeons.
But God (Yawhee) predates Buddhism. If you believe that God exists (which I figure you don't). Christianity as a religion came afterwards sure of course. But Christ was God in the flesh. I believe that anyway.
That's because you swallow what you're told instead of thinking about it critically. Because if you did think about it, you'd see that there's no way you can be sure the people who wrote the bible weren't just lying about the whole thing, and you'd notice that miracles (things that can't be explained through logic) don't actually happen.
And well, quite frankly, it's like trying to argue with someone on the rules of..say baseball, assuming the other person keeps the same rules. So as a "self-enlightened" fellow, you would know when to let it be. right?
The thing that dies in Pullman's book series is NOT God - it's called the "Authority", it's exposed as a fraud, merely a very powerful being who claimed to be God but wasn't.
The story is just a metaphor that speaks out against oppressors who lie and abuse power.
this guy wrote of fantasy and here you are talking this shit to scare people. and before you say i dont believe in god i do. i know all about judgement day and jesus will caome agin stuff.
Why does everyone always blame the Catholics for ruining everyone's fun? I'm Catholic and I'm delighted they're making an atheist-flavored fantasy film.
If I had a kid, I'd take him to see this and if he questioned God, all the better. I think all kids do eventually anyway.
Plus, atheists don't have barely anything of their own when it comes to popular literature and films. Let be.
Why are christians and catholics so concerned about this movie? If their faith is so strong and their religion is absolutely true, it should stand up to a children's movie. Common now, if you really think a movie is going to corrupt the youth into free-thought and logic, and fool them into thinking superstitious gods are false, then i would say your faith isn't very strong. LONG LIVE THE INVISIBLE PINK UNICORN!!
ok your 12 and a Christian and don't know what's wrong with the books. The fact is, other fellow Christians are trying to tell you! I know your smart kid. so try to study better.
if you don't want to see them FINE, your loss. but the rest of us don't want to hear why you think this movie is anti-christian! soties are stories. MOST NICE PEOPLE love them becuase they are creative. next time you boy-cott something, look for what it really stands for: imagination, or polotics.
ARE YOU MADE OF STONE OR ARE YOU JUST STUPID!? these amazing stories are supposed to be a fantsy journy kids and adults alike can read for THE PURPOUSE OF FUN! HOW DARE YOU ruin the magic by bringing religion into this!
if all you care about is wether or not these creative pieces of littirature follow your political belifs, then i say you shouldn't have the right to read them at all!
omg everyone compares this film.this book. to a "force" that promotes the misunderstanding of god and religion.
But if you forget that god exists, all that religion, just for that moment that you read this book, you could appreciate it. Every one hates this book because it promotes the hatred...pfff...it might be true, but remember, its FICTION.
Im christian, I seriously believe in god, but I still loved this book.
Never read the book & know nothing about the film BUT I expect the christians are complaining cos the feel left out. The muslims have had plenty of exposure by beeing outraged by everything from the pope thru cartoons to teddy bears and the crhistians feel they want abit of this outrage action to promote that they can be just as intolerant!
Lord of the Rings was so wonderful partly as a warning of the corrupting nature of invisibility: lust to be unaccountable. "Dark Materials" invites an opposite promise. The "dark material" of Aristotle's idea of "obeying your demons", the main historical promotion of this, appears near to one of his promotions of atheism in his mesmerizing book of serfdom, female subjugation, war, predation, racism, apartheid, and good manners, no Protesting criticisms: Endarkenment.
As long as you are capable of differentiating between fact and fiction, your beliefs and what you don't believe in, then you should enjoy these books, not condemn them.
if its all that. why did it suck so much :(

Got a great life, thank you! Spent the day on the beach with my family as oppossed to sitting in a dark room watching a subgrade Narnia. Your choice, I prefered watching all that God has made for us. Amazing sunset!! Thanks for the reminder though, you too!!

go back to watching veggie tales and fuck off,
religious nut sack,
its just a movie!
ladysmann33 4 years ago

Just try and be urself, try to be true to urself.
I always try to life live, without hurting others and myself. Sometimes it worx sometimes not. Life isnt and cant be perfect.
It only can be perfect in ur mind.

Ishimaru4Death 4 years ago 3

SIP100 4 years ago
Well, I'm 38... and I just read these books and loved them. Totally riveted. They are great, fast reads with engaging characters and very interesting ideas about religion, God, evolution, etc. They're intended to be readable for young adults, but it seems like a lot of adults read them as well. The third won a prestigious British book award for ALL books -- it was the first book in the "children's" category to ever win.
highbelter 4 years ago

Thanks for the reply.

why is everyone talking about religion? isn't this a film trailer?
ciaputa 4 years ago
This movie is much about religion too... not only fantasy and stuff. For example: the magisterium is the church which is trying to control every part of the world...

haha no surprise their, Religion is the worst thing that happened to this world
Dalekgodking 4 years ago
That is so sad.
scoutisyourfriend 4 years ago
Yeah, this movie is based off of a series of books "His Dark Materials" (which I highly recommend), so if the movie is anything like the books, then it will be very anti-religious.
shadowraven2004 4 years ago
I love this book. The movie looks really good! The cast is excellent, and the special effects look great!
Semido23 4 years ago
They have heavily edited the screenplay of the film to accommodate the many thousands of thick fundamentalist American Christians out there of late. The books are going to be deviated from massively and therefore, the central sting of what made them so good is going to be taken away. Philip Pullman wrote them controversial. That is how they should be depicted on the big screen. Any kind of editing is not acceptable.
TahoeVista 4 years ago 2
I agree, and I hope he at least makes them include the themes in the second and third movies. If not, I'm going to be sending him some angry letters.
Paragon19 4 years ago
ok how can this film be anti christian?
im seriously confused about that one
there is nothing to do with religion in the book or film
so how?
emilyyboo 4 years ago 2
What? Did you read the series? I don't want to give the ending away, but if you did, you'd see that the whole thing is about religion being a scam.

maybe its the moral state of the world that excepts books like that of His Dark Material. Don't confuse the fusion of the two. The state of the world and its produce.

are you serious? this so damn anti-christian. it deserves to be fucking fire wood.
Archangel56765 4 years ago
Just a thought: don't Christians publicly speak out against Atheists, like, since Christianity existed? Aren't there a lot of books and movies promoting Christianity?? Be fair. Even though this movie is not as anti-religion as you think, I still believe it isn't right for there to be such an uproar. Atheists have to put up with your religious crap all the time.
prncssalxs 4 years ago
"are you serious? this so damn anti-christian. it deserves to be fucking fire wood."
That's the idea, burn any books that go against your treasured faith that you hold so dear. Knowledge is the enemy.
While we're at it, why not go back to burning people as witches as well?
StealthDonkey007 4 years ago
ok i have no real say in this, im agnostic, but if your god is so great then how come the holocaust happened? how bout wars, famine, murder, death? dosnt sound like a good guy to me.
PattersonMOH 4 years ago
its because of the separation of man and God. Its because of sin in the world. And yes because God is so great, it WILL all end soon.
PubRat22 4 years ago
The idea of Armageddon really gets you excited doesn't it? You get all turned on by the idea of fire and punishment. My assessment is that you are a mentally ill pervert.
pauzhaan 4 years ago
I wasn't referring to Armageddon. Nor am I stating that I get all "turned on by the idea of fire and punishment" I was simply answering Patterson's question of why.
PubRat22 4 years ago
LOL I am "judging" your personality based on the things you are saying. You are not one of those "god is love" christians. You are one of those "god is going to smite you for being a non-believer" kind of christian. Are you aware that much of what Jesus taught came from Buddhism? There is even a school of thought that the REAL JESUS may have been a Buddha.
pauzhaan 4 years ago
pauzhaan you are also right. you may not know that god is there but some people still do good. and just because you are not a believer it doesnt mean you cant go to heaven.... well part of it does but thats not the point. the point is.... you are part right IN MY EYES.
mothasweet 4 years ago
o man! hahaha. you poor soul. takes all ages then huh? Listen pal, i was only answer a question that someone asked as "Why would God allow evil (rape, murder, holocausts, etc) to happen." I stated my opinion on that and said that the plan is that it will all end (rape, murder, holocausts, evil, etc)
Quite digging more than that into it!
PubRat22 4 years ago
are you aware that much of what Buddhism teaches, what Christianity teaches, what....whatever other religion out there teaches to be good, love your neighbor, do on to others. Come on. Still not a good argument. But, I'd bet your going to turn and say, "well you can't say that about Jesus then."
PubRat22 4 years ago
but there is even more to Christianity over all the other religions. There's no point in explaining to all the hardened hearted people here. They seem to be hording around here like pigeons.
PubRat22 4 years ago
Buddhism predates Xtianity.
pauzhaan 4 years ago
But God (Yawhee) predates Buddhism. If you believe that God exists (which I figure you don't). Christianity as a religion came afterwards sure of course. But Christ was God in the flesh. I believe that anyway.
PubRat22 4 years ago
That's because you swallow what you're told instead of thinking about it critically. Because if you did think about it, you'd see that there's no way you can be sure the people who wrote the bible weren't just lying about the whole thing, and you'd notice that miracles (things that can't be explained through logic) don't actually happen.
Paragon19 4 years ago
And well, quite frankly, it's like trying to argue with someone on the rules of..say baseball, assuming the other person keeps the same rules. So as a "self-enlightened" fellow, you would know when to let it be. right?
PubRat22 4 years ago
hes right. faith means seeing believing in something even if you cannot see it. all who dwel in darkness will have their pay.

TO CORRECT:
GOD DOES NOT DIE IN PULLMAN'S BOOKS!!!!
The thing that dies in Pullman's book series is NOT God - it's called the "Authority", it's exposed as a fraud, merely a very powerful being who claimed to be God but wasn't.
The story is just a metaphor that speaks out against oppressors who lie and abuse power.
So God doesn't die. So chill out already.

Let be.

pauzhaan 4 years ago
Why are christians and catholics so concerned about this movie? If their faith is so strong and their religion is absolutely true, it should stand up to a children's movie. Common now, if you really think a movie is going to corrupt the youth into free-thought and logic, and fool them into thinking superstitious gods are false, then i would say your faith isn't very strong. LONG LIVE THE INVISIBLE PINK UNICORN!!

omg everyone compares this film.this book. to a "force" that promotes the misunderstanding of god and religion.
But if you forget that god exists, all that religion, just for that moment that you read this book, you could appreciate it. Every one hates this book because it promotes the hatred...pfff...it might be true, but remember, its FICTION.
Im christian, I seriously believe in god, but I still loved this book.

Promoting lack of religion is far from promoting hatred.

Never read the book & know nothing about the film BUT I expect the christians are complaining cos the feel left out. The muslims have had plenty of exposure by beeing outraged by everything from the pope thru cartoons to teddy bears and the crhistians feel they want abit of this outrage action to promote that they can be just as intolerant!
ho hum!
