They are moving faster than you think. I do this as a cop every so often. Of course we practice too. Safety is always an issue for us. The first time my heart was pumping faster than ever before. Now six years, the is caution side of me, but it's not so bad.
Cool...I went to Air Assault school up in Ft McCoy, WI. We traded the Rangers up there some of our Jump Master slots for some of their Air Assault slots. (It's a Reserve Base but they have Rangers that teach the Combat Infantrymen School there and they also run an Air Assault course a couple of times a year.......or at least they did back in '91) I love jumping out of planes but rappelling from helo's is fun as hell too.
On a rappel you descend the rope with a descending device (figure 8, etc) attached to your harness. On a fast rope you are not attached to the rope...you just hold on to the rope with your hands and feet and slide down. Fast rope is a lot thicker than rappelling rope, and is better for short drops.
What??? They don't make you go full battle rattle anymore? Ha, I feel on my back in the bird when I tried to get up because my ruck screwed up my balance. That was pretty funny, kicking like a dying turtle trying to get up!
Yea, I'm surprised too about not wearing all the gear or at least a ruck. I was terrified cause I almost flipped all the way over wearing that dang ruck...Air Assault sergeant never let me forget it either.
they're not moving slow- they're going the normal speed of f*cking fast. haha. It's just the way the video records it (at like 80fps) so it looks slow
Wow, how long did it take you to conjure that one up, idiot? The Airforce is not apart of the Army. It is a part of the United States Armed Forces. Idiot^^
This course focused rappeling, so this was the culminating event, a UH60 rappel from 90 feet. This can be done from higher and is more deliberate than a fast rope (which is faster and more hasty)
Awesome video. One of my friends/fellow cadet will be going air assault this summer. He looks like he'll be havin fun with this. As for me I got the airborne school slot instead.
Camp Rilea! I went to AAC in 2005, when they had that massive attrition on the o-course on day 0 and the 12 miler on the beach in the gale force winds.
Yea, that sounds about right for zero day. Part of the smoking was bear crawling up and down that little hill you see in the background of this video with your duffle bag on your back.
They changed the 12 miler!!!! You guys got lucky. Those that wanted to come back and try again the year I went through were able to do it on the range road, which was 100% better than the beach.
Hahaha yeah they smoked us on that hill... I thought it was pretty fun. That course was great!
And yes, they changed the 12 miler. I finished around 2:45 with no problem. Did you guys have anyone jump into graduation. I know they usually do that but we didnt have aviation assests that day... bummer
I was in a three way tie for honor grad for my class. They were going to let us battle it out on the 12 miler but some douche complained until they found like one extra point on a test or something, and he got it. I had like plus 10 points and a 96 or something average and went 4/4 on my sling loads and maxed the hand and arm signals (since they were so hard and all... lol)
omg youtube is full of know-it-alls. everyone knows everything about everything! "i believe the fast rappel uses a triple wound pubic hair mesh rope....." sheesh - who cares?!
Wrong. Fast rope uses a 2'hemp or nylon single rope and rappelling uses two 1/2" ropes. Fast rope does not use a seat either. These guy's are using swiss seats.
I just got a slot to Airborne school this summer and the biggest reason I'm doing it, is to show my cadre I can handle a slot for AAS. AA is so bad ass.
When I went to Air Assault School, I was running 5 miles a day beforehand. Then in the last couple weeks prior to the school, I amped it up to 7 miles. You will do a lot of running and will graduate only after a 12 mile road march. Prepare yourself. This is a classic infantry style course and you will be proud of earning those wings. Best wishes!

It only looks that way because of the rate the camera can capture it. Kind of cool if you ask me.

Dont forget, a fast rope is also fairly more dangerous when under pressure [i.e gunfire]

@SWAT518 to my knowledge this is just for a drop off where time and safety isnt an issue, were as fast rope is to drop off quickly in a danger zone.

Thats rappel, Fast roping uses only 2 ropes from both sides of the helo and there are no security harneses, soldiers slice one after the other.

Wrong. Fast rope uses a 2'hemp or nylon single rope and rappelling uses two 1/2" ropes. Fast rope does not use a seat either. These guy's are using swiss seats.
