how the people in big city survive ex ny paris milan, do they have tree, maybe the skyscraper is their tree. who need tree any way. will u choose to sleep in jungle or in ***** star hotel?
I used 'they' and 'the farmer' as the same. Although 'the farmer' is probably not a good choice of words because the people who order the clearing of the land are generally rich businessmen types, while the farmers are the poor people who then work the land and rescue their families out of poverty earning enough money to be able to send their children to school. My point is that people are doing this, not oil palm. The need for vegetable oil is going to increase as the global population does.
OMG! why does everyone blame oil palm for the forest getting destroyed? These are developing countries, they are going to plant whichever crop gives the most money. Don't blame the crop, blame the farmer.
@GeneJSh but who is "they" and who is "the farmer"? NOT the overwhelming majority of the people living in these countries. these companies are often foreign and even when they are domestic are run by a mega-multi-rich guy like omar bakri who is hardly some old-mcdonald farmer guy (look him up- allegations of fraud and corruption abound). the people who suffer from plantation expansion usually have no say at all. nobody's blaming

To be rich is glorious! I'm going to buy me oil palm plantations in the near future. Still need to work harder to obtain the capital for that. It's a business with sound fundamentals. Consumption of palm oil, used in production of cooking oil and biofuels have always been steady. The market is always growing and prices are good with a great chance of even greater profits if you move up the production chain and cut through the middlemen. Indonesia is a nice country to do business.
Why don't U people give alternative ways how to improve the lives of the orang rimba etc. they can be employed in the plantation companies and improvised their lives. You are not disseminating the information to the pathetic orang rimba.
The Taikos of other edible vegetable oil competitors to palm oil are are sucks to the increasing production of palm oil that threatening their trade. They did this anti palm oil campaign in 70s and 80s, but they failed. Now they resurfaced. Oil Palm is pareniel crop once planted it economically viable to 25 years whereas soy plant is annual crop.

yeah i love it when you all said 'destroyed the earth'.so what, all the country in the world do that, you cannot attack our goverment, then this the way, use sympathy, global warming, all this because you want to protect your business, your wealth and your economic power.
This is so heart breaking. I am going to make sure not to ever buy any products made by Dove. Why is it that in times this modern we can't make products in a sustainable respectful manner? Sad.
The people who falsely claim that they are going green, is tell ing lies to the world, these poor people land and eco structure is being destreoyed, they are destroying every thing that keeps the natural balance of things. The Politicans are a group of liars who work for the Bankers and no one else. People are left to go Hungry and the people have to take control of their land.
We are bound to destroy this planet in our quest for more resources. It's just a matter of time when the tipping point will be reached... if we survive this 21st century, that alone will already be against the odds... Something needs to seriously be changed... and soon.
I guess the anti-palm oil crusaders has made the same and worse mistake like the soy oil members in 70's and 80's. Only this time, most of them are politically motivated.
I do sense some huge hypocrisy behind this so-called anti-palm oil crusade. Well, they advised to use other oil like cocoa butter. But one question remains, are those oil so different from palm oil? Are those alternatives land-saving?
Oil Palm plantation brings in civilization in these remote places.
It is sad that during this mordent days still have people suffer for no food and without proper clothing. Advice for the government and plantation owner provide local people job and education thus injects direct civilization to them. I think they did itjust did not show it in the video.
Remember, orangutans are NOT the only species that suffer from palm oil production! No one gives a S*** about tree frogs or fungus, even though, biologically speaking, the fungus that grows on the trees that are harvested are worth WAY more than the orangutans are as far as value to the ecosystem. People that only point to declining orangutan populations due to palm oil harvesting need a brain.
those palm trees do produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide but the timber trees have stored 10,000 years worth of carbon dioxide. Infact, it would take 10,000 years for those palm oil trees to reabsorb what those timber trees have released into the atmosphere.
i dont think my last point are successfully posted so im gonna write it again..
my last point is the giant oil palm plantations that operate in indonesia are own by indonesian corporations rather than multinationals. these giant conglomerates are buying more and more land banks every year so they can become the greatest. and their owners are mostly well connected to indonesian regulators and thus much needed international intervention to stop the level of deforestation that is happening today
second, that tribal ppl who gets interviewed on this documentary do not represent the majority of whats happening here. the tribes who live in those jungles of Sumatra and Kalimantan have been chopping woods illegally and sell them to the black market. they are not one of those "lost tribe" in africa who are naive and dont know shit. some of those tribesmen even are the ones who burn the jungle in order to prepare land for their very own oil palm plantations
I have seen other programs of other tribal pple chased away with violence in Malaysia and Indonesia by logging companies and palm oil producers. I am not saying they are some lost tribe but they relied on their forests land and didn't want their forest to be destroyed. Also the palm oil companies dump toxic waste in the river so that fish die and pple who rely on fish have lost a food source.
laurens890.."44 % of the Indonesian population depends on natural forests against 2 % who depend on palm plantations"?? please you clearly do not know what is happening in indonesia especially in those areas.
First, for the last 8-10 years ago traditional indonesian villagers in rural Sumatra have been planting oil palm on their 3-5 hectares of land. those ppl do not plant rice paddies anymore. some of these ppl can even afford a US$ 22,000 nice toyota because of this lucrative business
palm plantations cause destruction of the forest and its biodiversity, global warming, and many people, who are dependent of the forest, to be left out of resources and land. This land is stolen of them by multinationals. There even is slavery on some plantations.
What do you mean "starve"? I'm not saying oil palm is bad. It brings a much needed economy boost to Indonesia. But those Indonesian oil palm planters are too selfish and short-sighted to take care of their forests. If Indonesia wants to plant oil palm, do it like Malaysia and don't send those haze over to Singapore and Malaysia.
Palm oil is EVERYWHERE in processed foods in our supermarkets, so it means basically that we eat the rainforests everyday, and we seat for our breakfast on chairs made on the extincted Tiger's kingdom trees.
So much for the indonesian crooks, making money because of OUR needs.
West civilisation is eating up the old world to build...A big waste. Bon appetit !!
id rather kill the but capitalist fat cats who are the real root cause of this. no point getting bitchy with me seeing as you know the problem. This planet is overpopulated with people who cant see any further than whats on tv or what area of rainforest shall we cut down this week
Another bigger thing is to save up and buy hybrid vehicles. It won't be much but it would be something. Quit flying commercially as well. Can't afford a hybrid? Then get a Honda or Toyota.
This is so, so sad - orangutan eco-tourism would keep Indonesia in dollars forever, but it opts instead for cheap palm oil that will produce less and less money as it becomes more plentiful while pesticides will destroy fishing, tourism and the health of the people and animals. Its all so mindlessly corrupt.
The size of the United Kingdom! Covered in Palm Oil Plantations! Din Perulak is right, we can't aford them to cut down another tree. And yes, it hurts me too, to see them cutting down the trees.
I wish I could help, but I can't do it alone, so who's with me!
Here is how I do my little bit to help, in the supermarket, I check the product labels for palm oil, the labels use other names for palm oil like palmoleon, this name is used a lot on crips labels. Vegetable oil (palm) is another name. That's what I call the Palm Oil Free Diet, where you don't eat or buy anything that contains Palm Oil. It is quite hard, especially when most companies actually don't put Palm Oil on the label.
I agree, I would not buy products containing palmoil but unfortunately it is often not indicated on the labels. I wrote to the ministery asking why the customer is deprived of the possibilty to make a sustainable choice and why no label for ecofriendly palmoil is introduced. I did not get a reply...

ya what about the natives who are loosing their forest ? couldent palmwoil be produced in labs by special enzimes and biotehnology instead of growing trees for it? anyway if the most locals benifit then its good
Natives who lose their forest have got to change. The world is changing so they cant expect to just be what they want forever. The government will provide housing etc, but these natives are adamant, well then cant help it.
Palm Oil cant be produced using enzymes or biotechnology. Whereas oil can be produced from algae using biotechnology, but it will take little more research, so until then we need palm oil.
