I think you're taking this whole thing a little too seriously. As a real life sports fan I'm sure Will Farrell deeply respects Bill Walton and is honored to even be meeting with him. In fact, I think he's playing down his usual character (the blowhard buffoon) more than usual here and Walton has to bring him out a bit. It's the same as Stephen Colbert, who plays a blowhard for laughs himself. Farrell was promoting his movie here and Walton seems to be playing along as well.
