@loveslakers126 Funny you mention that, as Dean Andre, the composer of the show's music, mentioned that he'd be releasing the show's music, including the tracks heard in the pilots and otherwise never heard before, on Amazon and iTunes soon. Stay tuned.
This is actually the original correctly dubbed version. The original U.S. voices for the show included: Alan Young: 7-Zark 7; Keye Luke: Colonel Cronus; Ronnie Schell: Jason; Janet Waldo: Princess; Casey Kasem: Mark; Alan Dinehart: Chief Anderson
@SuperAdventures Funny how I called it G-Force back when I was a kid then... Yeah, I guess it WAS "Battle of the Planets", but even then I called it "G-Force." Weird.
@Vaekkrinhart It's understandable, considering the protagonist team was named "G-Force" in both incarnations, and BotP fans do often refer to it as "G-Force" unofficially.
This show had so many names the very first was Battle for the Planets (Gatchaman in Japan), Eagle Riders, then G Force and many others the names of the five members changed a lot too. G Force is the one I definitely remember.
man I loved this cartoon and Johnny quest, they were so raw. One of the only cartoons at the time that showed death scenes..lol. (Showing the badguys burn up in the Robots, and Race bannon was always killing somebody..lol)
They could have at least kept the original names to give the Japanese some credit. Even the whole voice acting thing makes it seem like a cartoon when it's really an anime. Very deceiving!
I remember this in the 70s!!!!!!! on a dc station what i had remembered was the G-force but it had the robot ?only one other person ever remember this i met him in 1982 in the 80s or 90s I never saw them then in the 70s it was not on long for sure I want a DVD box set
You've probably already got your questions answered by now, but I think I can clear some things up for you - and others who might be wondering the same things.
GATCHAMAN is the original Japanese Anime.
"Battle of the Planets" was the first Americanized version.
"G-Force" came after that, and retained more story than BOTP.
"Eagle Riders" was the last American installment of "Gatchaman" -- and arguable the worst! LOL!
I remember this show as a kid....and the names are not the same??...I remember the big guy his name was tiny?...and the little one was keyop?.the girl was princess and one of the other guys mark?..does anyone else remember that or is it just me?
And which is the "right" dubbed version? Please don't tell me its the one with that soccer mom-in-a-tin-can R2D2 rip-off, and with all of the violence cut out.
well no, but most american kids probably grew up with 7 zark 7. hard not to like your first anime experience eh? that being said, even as an american kid i also loved captain harlok and starblazers among others.
Any truth to the rumor this is becoming a live action film?If so,then they should cut out the stupid robot who introduces and closes the show.Just get to the action.
@quarqill Yes, that is according to wikipedia, there is a live-action movie called Gatchaman but for some reasons, it could not go to production because of budget constraints.
Yeah, that robot was pretty lame, but I'd rather have no violence than the kind of crap violence they offer in this series. By that I mean a room full of guards firing automatic weapons at a lone target who apparently has time to pull out his boomerang toy and throw it at them after they started firing at him. And then there is the whole "tornado mode" and "firebird mode". I don't care how much the writers made, I'd be ashamed to be a part of making this tv show.
I too am also excited about the capcom games... i hope they make them on ps3 as well as the wii. the only reason im excited about it is because of gotchaman :)
I have to say, I love the art of Ken and Jun during the credits.
It's interesting to see how the soon to be released Tatsunoko vs Capcom is bringing about a WAVE of nostalgia and interest in Tatsunoko's franchise...especially Gatchaman.
The artwork in the closing credits was done by Yoshitaka Amano of "Final Fantasy" fame I believe, during his long-time stint at Tatsunoko. I have a better quality version of the credits posted up as a separate video; you can find it on the sidebar to the right of this post. :)
And yes, I myself am enjoying the influx in interest on Tatsunoko's shows that's been brought about by TvC......I called it the moment the game was announced a year ago. :D
This is better then BotP. When the Phoenix is stuck Ken goes "Ryu, try to get us out of here! (the Phoenix rattles some) well, that didnt work. Transform to firebird mode" saying that all so monotone and calm, drove me nuts.
i remember zoltar but the ones early he had different voices i remember so did the kids i believe voice was by one that do shaggy voice on scooby doo....
In the FIERY PHOENIX (HINOTORI), the Phoenix transmutes into a form of plasma-energy. This is very dangerous for the crew, but it works in emergencies!
Well in the Original version Berg Katse is both a boy & girl.Sosai X the main villain merge a boy and girl fetus together causing Beg Katse to be a transgender and transfer to different schools every year till Berg Katse could control it.
i totally forgot about this show and then saw the robot chicken send up of it and it all came flooding back...it was on too early in the afternoon to watch after school, but i remember it on those sick days...
As mvmone says the names were origionally different and it was called "The Fiery Phoenix" if my memory serves me correctly. My mother hated 'cos I run around the house like a chicken with its head cut off after watching an episode.....I love it!!!
What we remember as kids is the American dub of the Japanese Gatchaman series. After watching this, I scoured the internet for DVD copies of BotP and found The Ultimate Box Set. It's not a complete catalog, but it does have 12 episodes. I got it for ~$50US. My son and I watched the first one last night. I have to say, after all these years, it's lost a bit of its luster for me, and Casey Kasim's voicing of Mark is irritating. I keep expecting to hear the Top 100 countdown. My son enjoyed it.
Too right my man I kept thinking that as I watched it.....good call. Also wasn't the villain also called Zoltar? or was that the planet he "hailed' from. Also do you remember it being as disjointed, you know, not smoother than it now appears? Bit like watching an early Simpsons episode.
Thanks for this. I used to watch it every Saturday morning when I was a kid, but it had a different dub back then. I was initially skeptical about Ace, Dirk, Agatha and the other two, but this version has two huge bonuses: people are actually dying, and no 7-Zark-7!
Love any verson of Gatchaman or BotP.....but EagleRiders sucked. What I really hate about this is the fact the voices are off track. Always wanted to have my very own Phoenix.
Does anyone remember a cartoon that came out a little after this about a paramilitary force with a Chevy Camero with gull-wing doors that opened so the car could fly and the guys son had a robot named Be-bop? I can't remember the name of that cartoon. My kid brother used to love it back then.

The show you recall is "Battle of the Planets," the first American incarnation of Japan's "Gatchaman."
This show is the "reboot" titled "G-Force: Guardians of Space."
Here's a name run-down ("Gatchaman" name first, followed by "BOTP," and then "G-Force"):
Ken = Mark = Ace
Joe = Jason = Dirk
Jun = Princess = Agatha ('Aggie')
Jinpei = Keyop = PeeWee
Ryu = Tiny = Hootie
"BOTP" names are my faves, but that's probably due to nostalgia! ;)

G-Force and Battle of the Planets are hacked up versions of Gatchaman. Both were aired at the same time, which made it a bit confusing.
Gatchaman was incredibly violent.
G-Force had 7-Zark-7 in it, I don't miss that part..

Saban had nothing to do with "G-Force: Guardians of Space". Turner Broadcasting (w/ the help of Fred Ladd, who translated early animes such as "Astro Boy" and "Gigantor" to English in the 1960's) produced "G-Force" (1986). Sandy Frank Entertainment "produced "Battle of the Planets" (1978), while Saban produced "Eagle Riders" (1996) which was cobbled up from the two sequels to Gatchaman (1972); Gatchaman II (1978) and Gatchaman Fighter (1979)
