As Judaism generally encourages scientific thinking, egalitarianism and numerous other progressive ideas such as the notion that "ordinary people" have a right not to be treated like dirt, it became very popular with the oppressed masses living under the yoke of the fascist Roman empire and thus became a serious threat to the Ruling Elites - hence the reason for the first Jewish genocide in the 1st Century.
