I respect these brothers for trying to mend fences and build bridges; however the ruling of the Imams is pretty clear on the issue of insulting the Prophet (as). Ask any, and I mean any, alim about the rulings from any of the four madhahib. There is not wiggle room here folks.

one day a kafir was insulting the beloved prophet of Allah and he remained silent. but then his good friend abu bakr couldnt take it no more and defended him, and at that point, Rasulallah got up to go, telling abu bakr "untill you spoke an angel was cursing him in return".

forgive the cartoonists, nothing can hurt the beloved Prophet as his name will always be protected by God Himself
