  • This demo Should have been in Tron!

  • Was this here demo written on a cartridge or floppy disk?

  • I am blown away...

It doesn't even look or sound like Atari 8-bit!

  • The 600XL exists, but it's only 16K.

  • 1:49: Do i see an Amiga Reference?

  • damn this must've taken some insane skill back then.

  • that is 16 bit

  • @ImIndoPeople No, it's 8bit Atari.

  • Hope the makers of these demos read all of these posts about their demos being fake and have lots of fun.

  • I love demoscene and well err, I am an Amiga Fan, but ... I can't stop watching this demo! It's great!!! And the music is awesome!!! I have this demo in my iPod :)

  • @nicolunacba Remember, the same man who designed the Atari chipset, went on to design the Amiga!

The ST is actually a 16 bit C=64 thanks to Tramiel chasing off all the talent.

Just wikipedia for Jay Miner and the truth will be known!

  • @zaphodb777 Tramiel was an idiot, but Atari still had some bloody good engineers, just that much of their work was never supported by management - i.e. the STylus and ST-Book. Some of their work was years ahead of it's time, but the people at the top were to blinded by their own ideas of what Atari should be to pay attention.

  • @Krys1304 In all fairness, the Tramiels took over an Atari that was broken and destroyed. They never had any resources or money with which to compete. They were always playing catch-up with little more than old machines in warehouses. True, they had many faults and their business mode was always in "cutthroat survival" mode (I still won't forgive them for killing Epyx), but I think they did the best they could.

  • @Krys1304 jack tramiel created c 64 and you call him a n idiot? he was a good businessman. its his son who is to blame.

  • 50 fps cool

  • As cool and amazing as this demo is, I think I'm going to barf from the sheer insanity of the entire thing.

  • Amazing for Atari 8-bit

  • This video is a hoax or it has to be modified 8bit Atari or a 16bit one. Original 8bit Atari does not have CPU power to handle so many graphic operations at such speed. Addtionally original pokey does not handle such good sound quality and such high resolution with so many colors. Additionally 8bit Atari has much poorer color palette.

  • @SOKOLEK it runs on a stock 8bit atari ;))

  • @thorgallpl

    "Yeah!!!" "Of course"!!!

  • @SOKOLEK let me guess. a c64 fanboy?

  • @thorgallpl Nope, I am just realistic. I had ATARI 65XE myself in the past and I know what it can do.

  • @SOKOLEK so it can do 'a bit' more than you ve seen. this demo was written in 1997. check out 'numen' released in 2002. its even more incredible than drunk chessboard but needs 320kb of ram (no loadings). cheers

  • @thorgallpl Not without modifications. 320kb = 40kB. No stock 8bit ATARI electronics has a capacity to generate graphics at such speed at with so rich colors and fx and to generate such quality of music. This demo looks like ST, or STE stuff. Additionally you bullshit a lot here.

  • @SOKOLEK ignorance is bliss, isnt it? lol

  • @SOKOLEK You could always download Atari800Win (or some other emulator) and the demo and then run it for yourself. I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

  • @SOKOLEK

This works with stock a Atari 1400 XL( PAL ) and 1200 XL( PAL ), has the same chips as all the European 400 and 600 expect uses more memory nothing more.

    btw.

"Unfortunately, the 65XE and 800XE machines sold in Eastern Europe had a buggy GTIA chip, specifically those machines made in China in 1991." this is the case?

  • @Jumpseri I ment 800, not 600. (such 600 doesn't exist?)

  • much faster and more coloful than on C64..!!!

    GREAT!

  • Can this be reprogrammed and updated with tracker music for let's say...an Atari Falcon or an Amiga with ECS/AGA chip set? I'd like to see a 'Drunken Chessboard 2' demo.

  • I am a ZX fan, but I must admit, this is way better than any C64 color demo. C64 default colours sucks !

  • i thougt it was an Atari St

  • Having spent my time in the Commodore 64 scene, I must admit that this is a demo with some impressive effects! I like trhe fast and smooth vector grahics and the motion-blurred chessboard effect a lot. Plus it's a shame that the C64's palette was so limited compared to the Atari's - plasmas look to much better when you've got a wide range of colors available.

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY

  • WOW! What processer tricks did they pull off with that one? And can you really get 60fps shaded 3d shapes out of an Atari XL/XE?

PS. I'd like to see this demo updated for a TT030 or an Atari Falcon 030.

  • An XE could do it... I doubt an XL could, though...

  • XE is only a facelift of XL series. No hardware has been upgraded.

  • Processor is pretty much the same, but sometimes RAM helps. XE has 128 KB, in comparison to virtually all of the XLs, which on average had 64KB.

  • Not really, only 130 XE has 128 kB, while most users had an 800 XE or 65 XE, both of which had 64 kB. Btw. Drunk Chessboard runs fine at 64 kB machines and does not benefit from more RAM.

  • fucking awesome demo D: simple concept, useful art and gfx

  • old supercomputer :)

  • Comment removed

  • 7-bit palette. 128 colors. (16 actual colors * 8 luminances). The Atairi 2600 had the same ability.

  • Fox at it's best... :)

  • Impressive presentation

  • awesome music! great!

  • Nevermind, I found it out myself. Group: Infinity, Demo Name: Drunk Chessboard for Atari XL/XE from 1996 :)

  • who created this demo and when and what's the name of the demo? Thanks.
