They all use pedals to get the metal sound. The guitar doen't make that much difference with all the FX available now. Not to mention the modeling amps.
No guitar sounds good without fx when playing metal. I've been playing for 40 yrs, and I've used just about everything. Les Pauls ,and Les Paul style guitars are some of the best sounding guitars without fx. Zakk Wylde uses them, as well as many other Metal guitarists. They must be using them for a reason. It doesn't have to be pointy to be metal.

He seemed very uncomfortable singing live, still sounded great but there was something missing, not a great peformer.Angela I think takes it to the other extreme and I tend to feel a bit embarrassed watching some of the silly poses she strikes onstage,the lyrics are frequently pretty shocking too. That said the new album is good.

Angela is much better. But i will have to say the riffs in Old Arch Enemy are much more brutal and still maintains the melodic aspect.
