He may have become disgusted with the trappings of fame and the caricature it makes of an artist, but to say he never wanted it is disingenous. Noone sitting in his room practicing and dreaming about the future is saying "I hope people love my music and art but never know who I am and I can remain in obscurity." It just doesn't happen.

@09jackstraw There is probably some truth to that. I think he was manic depressive and would therefore explain his creativity but disinterest in fame. He probably wanted people to like his music but honestly did not want fame, not realizing how irrational and impossible that really is. I do think he was a tortured soul however. While many artists try and portray this to sell records, I actually believe it with Kurt.
