  • Awesome horn section.

  • Wow! Sam & Dave were something.

  • Rememer it was Germany did they even understand the song?Mady just the music.

  • Wolfhound pack Cu Chi South Vietnam, 1966-1968. All the spokes in the wheel are accounted for. Big D,Quiff,EROS, Midnight, Wildman,

The best music from the one and only Sam and Dave.

  • GREAT quality vid. Thanks for putting it up.

Interesting: Lots of folks commenting on the "restrained" audience - and some of our German friends have tried to explain the cultural context.

Haven't seen any remarks re: the all black band. Seems weird not to see Ducky Dunn and Steve Cropper back there.

Stax was such a pioneer and beacon for integrating players. In studio and on tour, they featured mixed groups from the beginning.

  • Love that guitar!

  • I never was into Sam and Dave was I was younger, however, today I realized how good those brothers actually was.

  • Audience fail...

  • Great "vid" sam&dave were proberly there to entertain u.s.troops,but most of the white guys there would have been germans,no self-resepecting yank rednex, would have turned up! 1967,what a great year ,the mighty CELTIC F.C.being the cherry on the cake as they became the first british team to win the european cup, every player born within a 30mile radius of glasgow, couldnt see that happening in 2011!

  • If I was there I would be dancing all over the place. How could they just sit there

  • 1 Dislike. 1 Lonely Person.

  • Who's the dickhead who DIDN'T like this video?!!

  • @NicNac13c Chill, he probably just clicked the wrong button :)

  • I should have known this was a european audience. Ain't no way americans white or black just sit there and clap to Soul Man

  • I think Sam and Dave inspired Eric Clapton and Bobby Whitlock as Derek and The Dominos--EC wanted a tag-team vocal approach like Sam and Dave's. I they they got it. 8)

  • @JeffW77 I agree!

  • CLASSICsoul, simple as. I'll ignore that comment by Beaconmike, ignorant bastard he is.

  • They must have done this concert at the University of Zombies

  • I love this video. These guys are cool.

  • cant believe there's not more hits, sam and dave were the best.....

  • still just blows my mind watching the audience...

  • Why would they reference Woodstock in '67 before the famous concert in '69? Was it already well known at that point for its cultural scene or something?

  • @g0ldbuG he's saying he's educated, from good stock, not woodstock...

  • @blue1717 No, he's saying "educated at Woodstock" which was the name of the school that David Porter (the author of the song) went to as a child.

  • Gotta love it True Soul Music

  • brings chills to my soul. timeless.

  • Unquestionably Sam and Dave are two brilliant frontmen, but you've got to hand it to the musicians; swinging the instruments and synchronised jumping! I'm surprised one of them doesn't get hit in the face with a saxophone!

  • Words fail me. The breakdown where the guitar is just riffing blows my mind! Shame I was born in the early 70s, never got to see these geniuses at work

  • best dance i´ve ever seen 2:29 - 3:16

  • i think that's big baby on the drums....lol...

  • Wonderful performance, it's good to be a soul man,

    enjoy!

  • Man, id love to hear what simon cowel would say to these guys if they played on Xfactor as a guest star, as apposed to the less than average Rhiana.

...im 18 and this is clearly way before my day, but MY GOD! INCREDIBLE :D

  • Simon Cowell has no appreciation of good music (he admits himself he has no interest in listening to music). He knows bugger all about the history of music either. I could see him turning down Sam Cooke because some pretty boy white singer he feels he could manipulate was on the same show.

  • soooo good

  • Absolument splendide !!!! Plus de quarante ans après, "Soul man" est toujours une de mes chansons préférées.

  • The crowd was something else only one or two people even seemed to understand it.Sam and Dave gave it there all!!

  • Apart from that it may be a culture thing for that decade. I don't know about Germany but the audiences in Sweden are famous for not going bananas during a live act until the really like what they see, it doesn't matter if it's Michael Jackson or some unknown artist.

The fact that this audience warmed up at the end might just mean that Sam & Dave were really REALLY good.

Another thing is that they may not have been allowed to stand up during the concert.

  • Can I just say something in defence of the german audience? I am not german, but I am swedish, and I think that there is a generation as well as a culture question going on here:

The people we see here in the audience were probably born in the late 40:s, and may have been raised with a different kind of music in some part. This may have been a new thing for them, in their faces it shows clearly that they like it.

  • @happymommy1 Actually born earlier, and yes, times were different.

  • what a rubbish audience, they didnt even move... how can you not move to this, its just so natural

  • Saw Sam & Dave in 1971 at Wiesbaden Germany... they were at their peak..

  • Was this at the Hap Arnold High School Auditorium? ( Now wiesbaden High, DoDHS)?

If it was I might of been right next to ya!

  • that aint the original Dave.....

  • That is Dave Porter, the only Dave in Sam and Dave. Maybe you should provide evidence of you so called 'knowledge'?

  • You mean "Prater", not Porter.

  • Here I am at 1:15 a.m....I got to git on up and go to church in the morning, but just about right now I'm back in the day, when "groovin' " actually meant a "stage show" with real instrumentalists as well... goodbye "chitlin' circuit," hello appreciation and world renown for your gifts of soul....Peace!!! from an old schooler.

  • Cool-Cool-Cool....!

  • i'd be losing my shit right in front of that stage, i wish black people would come back again and reclaim the crown of awesomeness, not sure who has it right now though, white people never did, i say the japanese got it right now, gotta take it back from the 5678's

  • Absolutely right, how anybody can sit and stay still and emotionless while they were being fed that performance is beyond me!!!?

  • me and my band are playing this song in a Christmas concert

  • ssssssssssss I LOVE SOUL

  • The year..1967..the month...October...the place....Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. I was in basic training....flight 1267. One night, on stage, a REAL old guy...about 24 or 25...a SSGT, did his rendition of this awesome song. It made me a Sam & Dave fan forever!

  • this has got to be the best performace i've seen that's not been danced to! i can't help it and i wasnt there...lol

  • Sax players rule , Sam n Dave da best,

the crowd needs to get their freak on.

  • There'll never be another live act like Sam and Dave (may God rest his dear sweet soul) I love this vid, its so precious.

  • the crowd was really quiet Sam and Dave had to be good to be able to perform in front of such a mellow crowd!!Did they know what they paid to see?LOL...

  • great!! thanks

  • Great live version.

Watch the crowd, looks like they are watching an autopsy till about 3:10 then they start clapping to the beat. Great vid no matter what.

  • Things are probably different today, but back in '67, when you put on an R&B show for an auditorium full of white Germans, you probably wouldn't see a lot of movin' & groovin'.

  • @quirpco which of the guys is dead?

  • @ranmae57 Dave. He died in 1988.

  • @quirpco and to all the people wondering the crownd is not going mad. you cant forget the time this show was hold. at this time you could not go mad like you wanted to, cause of the lost war and trying to find the own idendtity. if you danced like crazy and someone saw that in tv you could loose your job or be kicked out of university...but---belive me inside they were dancing---saying that as a german...and at least the hall is filled to the almost last seat

  • @compaq2441 I know. It's like the band is thing alive. They could at least clap along with the music. All that energy.

  • @compaq2441 LOL!!!!! you're hilarious! (autopsy) LOL!!! I hear ya...Over here EVERYBODY WAS JAMMIN' BACK THEN! People would be jumping on the stage dancing right along with 'em! I call them the "Deacons" of Soul...really took you to church on a song!!

  • WOOh,its HOT ! Chicago BLUE.

I wish i could be there.

Even i really like way to clothe.

  • god is a soul man

  • YEAH!

  • Amazing! 6 sax players! Sam and Dave are so great!

  • Now THATS old school R&B! Great video!!!! I always liked Sam & Dave.

  • And they not even out of breath!
