The name for rational numbers comes from the word 'ratio' and has nothing to do with being 'reasonable.' Rational numbers are numbers that can be written as ratios (p/q | p, q are integers, but q is not zero), and irrational numbers are those numbers that cannot be simplified in the form of a ratio (p/q).
