Retired? What are you talking about! He's actually planning to sing another opera soon. And as far as I know he's sining at least 20 concerts per year. Read
Lets not forget that Carreras spent many months in Seattle, Washington at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for his bone marrow transplant for the treatment of Leukaemia. He is a cancer survivor and a hero in my book. He returned to opera in 1988 and retired in 2009. At 6 years old he had his first singing performance on radio as a Boy Soprano and continued for several more years as a boy soprano. His motto sums it up: "Make Every Day Your Masterpiece".
@turuanu wow, you need to listen to more early Carreras!! He had the best of Pav and Domingo. His early stuff shows his honest, fearless sound that Pav never had imho.
carreras should have stuck to these lyric roles since he was a lyric tenor rather than push and ruin his voice. i love this recording such a beautiful sound he was blessed with!

Those tenors are just fine (I wouldn't put Mingo and Carrera's name next to Pava, Gedda, di Stefano, Bergonzi, MDM though). No matter what, 2 facts remain the same. Carreras doesn't sound Italian and lack a good technique. Second, in a metaphoric sense, you grew up with a Russian you know what...How does that grab you. Oh..unless you were part of the upper class in Hungary, I doubt you could attend live opera for those top performances. I have been to Hungary in the 1970s you know.

Lack the brilliance in the voice which is much needed for the lyric Italian repertoire. He sounds too throaty. Not pleasant in the context of the lyric Italian repertoire. Probably is sounds even worse when he sings La Donna e Mobile, especially in the cadenza.

Marokt-When you were living with a big Russian dick up your rear in Hungary, I was going to opera in the most reputable venues in the West and have seen most of the tenors whom you were listening on tape live on stage! Carreras doesn't have an Italian sound. As you can seen here, it's a pedestrian performance.
You are a really old whale in the world of opera! And quite conservative.
Our generation thinks different about these things. Carreras sang in Hungary at his prime in the 70th more times. And we could also enjoy live Domingo, Pavarotti, Cossutta, Gedda, Alva. And Di Stefano, Bergonzi and Monaco. Under the Russian bear. Are these tenors good enough according to your taste? I respect your openion, but don't agree with it. Carreras is great in this role.

Terrific!!! I love this aria anyway - I think I have 2 other versions in my favorites, one sung by Vargas and another sung by Pavarotti. This is the first I've heard of Carreras singing it - thank you!
Don't forget that Carreras was the KARAJAN's favorite tenor

Your openion is a good example of the sematic thinking of opera and roles. Carreras creates a very interesting Duke.
