I will swear until the day that I die that there is no instrument more powerful than a Hammond B-3 when it lets loose with its tone-wheel generated, leslie-modulated scream such as can be heard in the latter bars of Procol Harum's Conquistador.
To this day it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
@1001793 check out Jim Thirlwell (aka "Steroid Maximus", "Manorexia", "Foetus"). He is a New York-based Australian composer/musician who has taken orchestral arrangements and pop-music conventions to amazing places. Lots of people compare him to Frank Zappa, but I think he's even more innovative and clever than that.
I did see Stevie Vai do a concert with them, by the way. And I'm not a dork either. Maybe you should be taking a good look at yourself before you label anyone else. Grow up. Mistakes are made and stand to be corrected, but ignorance like yours should not have to be experienced when all I did is make a comment.
Procol Harum's Concert in Denmark's Ledreborg Castle in summer 2006 performing live with the symphonic splendour of the Danish National Concert Orchetra and Choir.
The Lyrics ... The Music ... The Band .... The Orchestra...The Choir ....
Conquistador -
Whiter Shade of Pale -
First there was ..Bach .......... then ..Brahms ....... now .. Brooker
Danny Kirwan of The Mac,Steve Howe of Yes-when he wasn't so pompous-but also Blixa Bargeld of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds,John Greenwood of Radiohead and and and.....this list could be neverending....so I stop here!!!!
@alphaalpha5 I know this will make you mad....but I'm not a Trower fan....though I still regard him as the best they ever had....he had his moments....but in all I find him a very conventional soloist with a very restricted melodic and harmonic knowledge of his instrument.....I'm a guitar player,a teacher and a bandleader....not that it's necessarily got to say anything....but there were real giants out there like Fripp,Hackett,Latimer....they would fit into the Procol cosmos perfectly...
@alphaalpha5 I mean....Trower had the feedack ok????...and he used it brilliantly.....but without it we have a guy trapped inside the pentatonic scale and leaning slightly towards metal which I'm not into generally....even Curved AIr had GREAAAAAT guitarists....there's one called Mick Jacques...or something like that....Monkman...Manzanera....Ronson....Phill Miller...even Mike Oldfield at times...that's the kind of guitar sound I'm into.....for guitar is first and foremost A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT
@TheBitterSweetgr , I don't know why I would be upset if you like or dislike of Robin Trower. Not my problem, but I must admit that I find your critique of the Procol Harum lineup to be more than a little pretentious.
In fairness, II must point out that I am not a professional guitarist (but I play AND listen), I'm not a bandleader, and my teaching doesn't include music. Puts us on equal footing as far as opinions are concerned.
@alphaalpha5 PRETENTIOUS?????Why on earth do you believe that??????You see I'm a little bit fanatic about'em because I love them SO MUCH....In my opinion there's never been a better band....when it comes to mixing the classical with the rocky...you're too unfair. It's just that I'm not into metal at all-and this old rascal here does the TAPPING....chrissakes!!!!!Does Gary Brooker and his music deserve this kind of treatment?????
@TheBitterSweetgr ...so more opinion. I prefer music that is expressive at a personal level and doesn't worry about dazzling listers with a wild flurry of key changes, bouncing time signatures and superfluous notes, although these surely have a place when used prudently.
The guitar is indeed a musical instrument However, it really needs an empathic player to turn string vibration into communication. Otherwise, leave it all to preprogrammed synthesizers and their superb technical "skills".
@alphaalpha5 no no no....I'm not into that at all.....but you could have the simplest three minute song with a magical twist-the Beatles per esempio-and the weirdest one with complex harmonic changes-look into the Bowie songbook....this man turned difficult harmonies into pop anthems...that's what I'm really into...and I'm into more straightforward and expressive guitarists as well like Harrisson,Peter Green,Clapton at some stages...Jeff beck and Syd Barrett-real geniuses.Trower was conventional
@TheBitterSweetgr I don't care for metal, either. As for your recent list of guitarists, I can't see how you can rate these guys as anything other than "conventional". Jeff Beck, maybe not so conventional. Syd Barrett .. well, I prefer Gilmour.
I'm not here to proselytize for Trower. I enjoy his music and admire his style. If others do not, so be it.
By the way, I viewed your "Bittersweets" video. I like it! In fact, I slapped a big "Like" thumbs-up on it. Keep up the good stuff.
@alphaalpha5 Thank you mate....thanx a lot!Listen....we're just exchanging opinions....and that's quiet healthy...in my opinion Steve Hackett,Robert Fripp,Syd Barrett,Jeff Beck during his early days,Harrisson-on Revolver and White Album -as well as Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Graham Coxon of Blur set the standards for the unconventional and "unexpected" guitar playing....they are pretty difficult guitarists to copy....believe me...for they were unique in their style!Don't get me wrong....
@alphaalpha5 ....I'm not only into the "difficult" or the "unconventional" in music...I like the simpler stuff too!!!!Mick Ronson.Phil Manzanera.Gilmour,Page,Andy Latimer of The Camel....I love'em all....How could I not???I've grown up listening to them...and thus fell in love with music....there are loads of others too...as for The BitterSweet.....Greece is a very tough country which devours its children....but we're struggling...you can't imagine how hard! Thanks for your kind words....
Obviously it's a matter of opinion but it's not just me who think's that Geoff Whitehorn has fitted it with the group better than any other guitarist that they've had and while Barrie Wilson was brilliantly idiosyncratic Mark Brzezicki is top notch and was immaculate her and i.m.o. at least as good as Wilson was at Edmonton.
@rafartreides ELO was, but Jeff Lynne started to fall back on keyboards and electronics to get the sounds that he wanted. Still think REAL string instruments have a better, warmer, purer sound. I agree with you. In modern times, this is THE BEST combination.

@37valpal That's not Steve Vai, you dork. It's 'Geoff' Whitehorn. Go to google and get educated a little.
'Geoff' Whitehorn has been with PH since, like 2001.
