Truthfully, Diamond wrote this as he was becoming a bigger star, to have something that appealed to the teen girls, as was commonplace back then among male artists. Something to make the girls "swoon"...they all did it. Anyway, it worked for him, and still is working, he has a HUGE female fan base and they eat it up when he does this number. @flyingscience Can only speak for Elton as he's my favorite artist and, after seeing him for all three California concerts in last year, I really didn't appreciate what a fantasic, gracious performer he is @ age 63 even though I had seen him 3 times in 1980s/90s. Damn, he just gets better!
@1caninelover Elton ruined his vocal cords by too much marajuana (by his own admission ) he also had surgery to remove a node . In later years his voice was better and deeper .This is a rare ,rare instance of an improvement after surgery (usualy there is a loss of quality) . Elton has talked about this in a few interviews . Compare and contrast his songs sung young vs old its a big diffrence .
@flyingscience Oh yes, voice has changed; obvious with his older songs however he still has much better lung capacity than Leon Russell whose past use of anything I suspect, did not have nearly the adverse affect on his lung capacity (and overall health) that years of heavy cigarette smoking. To my knowledge Elton was never a cigarette smoker; typically leaves a lot more damage as it is the last habit anyone quits & COPD is permanent.
@flyingscience And when I was young & broke I could afford tickets somewhere out in the 'south 40' of some huge Los Angeles venue thus I only heard the performance. Much more enjoyable when you're up in front of the stage; I had good seats in San Diego & Ontario but Hollywood Palladium had no assigned seating so I actually was in front row. Not possible at other venues unless one is more well-connected than I am, would have seen he & Billy Joel had I known @ the time.
I am so honored and lucky to enjoy such a talented person such as ND until today. I wish him good health so we can enjoy more of ND and his music for a long long long time. How many great music artist has passed away, just count our blessings..

@flyingscience And when I was young & broke I could afford tickets somewhere out in the 'south 40' of some huge Los Angeles venue thus I only heard the performance. Much more enjoyable when you're up in front of the stage; I had good seats in San Diego & Ontario but Hollywood Palladium had no assigned seating so I actually was in front row. Not possible at other venues unless one is more well-connected than I am, would have seen he & Billy Joel had I known @ the time.
