  • @1Thompsonmusic Do a little research. Glenn Gould is one of the most important pianists of the 20th century. His music and his opinions/eccentricities are what make him fascinating (but mostly, his music). Listen to his Bach interpretations, and it should all make sense.

  • 16 people have no souls.

  • He's an autistic savant. That's why he seems strange. I'm the same way as him. Autistic individuals are among the greatest advancers of human civilization. Einstein, Gould, Da Vinci, people who are able to shun social interaction in pursuit of sublime knowledge. Wonderous gifts to humanity.

  • @skyd171 Gould was not autistic.

  • @pheadhones You make such a strong statement for having such a superficial understanding of autism. Everyone falls on the Spectrum. By Gould's personality traits, it's clear that he is high on the Spectrum. Anti-social individuals with exceptional skills & interest in narrow areas are likely to be high on the spectrum, which describes Gould. He also made stereotyped noises and movements [while playing] and avoided eye contact in interviews. These are typical of Asperger's, a form of autism.

  • @skyd171 You are latching onto character traits that Gould purposefully amplified when in front of an audience or on camera. His exceptional skills at piano come from a very early start and the decision at age 7 to become a concert pianist, along with practice. The 'noises' you refer to were actually Gould singing along with the piece, as his mother had originally trained him as a singer - by having him sing along with everything he played.

  • @pheadhones Living in a secluded retreat with one's dog seems is too extreme to be a "camera act" as you strangely suggest. Gould also disliked crowds, and preferred animals to people (something he discovered at the age of 6). This misanthropy is just more evidence. You clearly have a superficial understanding of what Autism entails, so you are scarcely qualified to debate the issue. It's funny that you are so cocksure when you don't even understand the topic.

  • @skyd171 The only knowledge of Gould you seem to have comes almost entirely from the video you are commenting on. No one is claiming to be an expert on autism (except you, I suppose). However, you are just some guy on the internet diagnosing someone with autism, whom you never met and who has been dead for years. Good job!

  • @pheadhones You might try spending less time posing as a Gould scholar and debating things you know nothing about. Stop your babbling and ridiculous outbursts; instead, go educate yourself so that you will not mire other hapless victims in pointless debates that only serve to expose your ignorance.

  • @skyd171 I have studied Gould, and simply did not appreciate your attempt at spreading misinformation.

  • @pheadhones Don't be foolish, you just claimed that Gould was not autistic, but then admit that you have little clue what autism is. You're the one spreading misinformation and uneducated opinions.

  • @skyd171 Gould was never diagnosed as such and all of his personal eccentricities can be and have been explained without mention of autism. Please stop trying to pass off your opinion-based speculation as historical fact.

  • @pheadhones You must be daft. One need not be diagnosed with AIDS to die from it. What's more, it's obvious that he would not be diagnosed, given that he grew up in the 30's. For those with functioning logical processes, it is clear that the scientific understanding of neuroscience and psychology at this time was infantile.

What's more, you admit you don't know what autism is, yet argue Gould did not have it. You are an ignorant, bull-headed, jackass.

  • @skyd171 You do realize one does not die from AIDS, don't you?

  • @pheadhones Cease the pathetic clutching at straws.

  • a most unusual man

  • When Gould sings there ...,.even the animals think.... what is this for kind of an idiot, but I mentioned that i a good way of course.

  • Is this from a DVD or what ? Please tell me if so.

  • He's singing "Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt" from Des Knaben Wunderhorn by Gustav Mahler, an interesting choice since it's a sermon to fishes.

  • 2:07

"bish? wtf is the crazy guy singing?

  • @kourosh89 Bam bam! bam bam! Bjadadadabadada, Die Karpfen mit Rogen Seind all’hierher zogen. Hab’n die Mäuler aufrissen!! Etc...

  • hahaha, i love this guy

  • Thanks for sharing. It shows a comletely different side to this extremely gifted pianist.

  • what is he singing?

  • Hahaha, funny.

Thanks for sharing this vid !

  • "I get along better with animals than I do with humans.." I concur.

  • Polar bear...

  • @GermanOperaSinger

    i disagree .

1st: The same can be said for Babies, not Children (ok, perhaps thats what you meant ...anyway... lets be precise , esp. on a Gould-Clip, i do not think people without a certain knowledge will watch this stuff , i consider all the people here as ... "YouTube-Elite")

2nd: Beautiful&Innocent , thats true. Honest ist semiright, it depends on your

  • @The1Rausch

You are mad. I am mad about you!

Honestly: I don't really get the "tagging" part. That's over my head :-(

  • @lebdo

i know, i am sorry. Please keep it easy, i will not try to beat you in Your Discipline,

but my Discipline is called "Transfer" and i am pretty sure that beyond all 6.8Billion humans

maybe two others are able to come close ... lol

But my English is so damn frozen (sorry for all the mistakes...) which makes it even more difficult to understand.

Keep it easy, its not over your head , i had to explain this to our Neurologist (in German...!!!) and it took him about a week to follow. ;)

  • @The1Rausch Thanks for the interesting and informative follow up. I agree with what you say but I was speaking based more on my own perception and not necessarily the reality of the situation. I realize that most animals are not 'loyal' or consciously aware of it in the sense that humans are, but take domesticated canines (or many other 'house' pets) - if nurtured to adulthood, they grow extremely attached to their benefactor/master. Self awareness as you imply, may be the source of lies...

  • ...evolved as a mechanism to 'save one's own skin'. To be self aware is to be selfish in a way - and I generally find that adults are much more self aware than children. As the human mind matures in adolescence, it begins to become less oriented toward a 'black and white' perspective of the world - ie. a lie is good if I can gain something from it, it is ok to stab my best friend in the back to get ahead. Children's logic does not go that far....

  • ...Maybe my fascination and admiration for animals and young children comes from the fact that I can relate to them more than adults - I was an autistic child myself and still in many ways have the brain of a child - this has gotten me into trouble many times in the adult world, where I have been too straightforward in my remarks. I've not learned to fake interest and hospitality towards people I dislike, and my social relationships (with fellow adults) have suffered as a result.

  • Knowledge about Predators and the evolution of the brain... The greatest Predators on Planet Earth have learned (evolution) to use a lie like a tool.

I am NOT talking about Mankind, you can NOT sum humanity up with a term like "Predator", those categories are not defined by the result [which would make mankind look more like a Virus, not a Predator btw...] they are defined by present behaviour-Patterns.

The greatest Predators on Planet Earth today are not Cats as you might think, ok

  • they are on top of the list compared with other Predators, what explains "paradox" Species like lions which are pure Predators (like all Cats)but living in social Struktures.

The PERFECT and GREATEST Predators are found among birds.

Those species are able to lie and able to make a multidimensional plan which includes the strategy of lying as a basic pile of this complex thinking pattern. [They are able to recognize themself in a mirror, too...->]

  • [Think about it, and you will see that being honest is a natural thing in social animals. Some Apes(older like OrangeUtangs) are not able to recognize their own picture in a mirror, what makes a lie absolutely impossible.[Think a minute about it, the conduction is imminent...] Younger Apes like Bonobos or Shimpansee are able to recognize themself , the basis of every lie.

3rd: completely loyal to those they trust ? Nonsense! Most animals are not even able to see a difference btw. being

  • "loyal" and "Trust" at all, that is even for most humans pretty difficult to learn ...

Every (wild!) animals is loyal to its own nature (very important and one of the reasons why mankind is what it is ... we have lost [/ our Society is making us loose...] the basis of life : Being loyal to yourself [to your own nature]

And this basis is also the basis to acceptance, what explains why 80-90% of all human beings in "modern" Countries are not able to accept certain

  • unchangeable differences AT ALL. That is why Society created a new word which is used instead : Tolerance.

The Basis of Tolerance is a lie told by yourself to yourself which is so fundamentally wrong that a human brain is 99,8% of the time not able to process it right , instead it safes Space(Neuronal Activity) and Time with mistagging the unsolved Thesis {[-unsolved because KNOWN ("tagged") as "False/antilogic" AND(!)"Selfcreated" which makes no sense to any functional

  • brain-region [not logically processable = Absurd with no known reason but NOT funny (!) ]}

-with a dominant "Processed", a "Safe medium" & a"True Info" Tag which forces your functional Memory Storage (Peripheral Areas of the Outer Layer in your bigbraintissue) to immediately finalize the Thesis/Info {(=safe as medium term ... sometimes even as long term what makes those people absolutely unable to fully revaluate this Thesis ever (!!!)

  • because long term memory is marked by a different functional area which taggs information with nothing but a timestamp and decides if to safe in the(4example) "happened to myself" label; if a timestamp is missing those information will always feel like a part of yourself without any further explanation , you are not able to understand why this info cant be changed or even why or since when its a part of You ... Info which is tagged with a wrong timestamp

  • (4 example info which is mislead into long term memory instead of short term memory - happens if areas of decision are blocked by a sudden emotion 4 example) you have a so called DejaVu.}

If you are able to understand this you are an endangered Species, so take care !{Being not honest isnt the problem btw. humans, the big Problem which stops human developement is that we are forced to replace the own nature

  • Animals are beautiful. They're innocent, and honest - you know where you stand with them. It's easy to earn their full acceptance and they're completely loyal to those they trust. The same can be said for children.

  • with "TheSociety" in a way which leaves no space to ever be able to revaluate the big picture which sooner (if you are smart) or later leads into some mental illness : there is nobody and nothing reacheable by pure logic except yourself and your own thinking patterns which are trapped between blaming yourself and no chance to understand why (which first leads into a thinking-loop ("Depressions" and/or Neuroses(4ex. Fear) and often ends in one of those hundred forms of Shizophrenia}

  • i love this guy! he is a true genius and his love for animals touches my heart! i have worked with exotic animals and for a shelter here taking care of the sick ones and for 3 vets until i got sick and couldn't do it any more. i do feed stray cats and my husband and i are trying to get them all spayed and neutered and helping other animals that are in need of care. i know my neighbors think i am crazy when they see me out in the street whistling to the birdies. thank you again for posting!

  • Maybe the piece he chose to sing was an acquired taste.

The look on the cats face at the end is just priceless.

  • High functioning autism.

  • Knut didn't like it. :-(

  • hahahahhahahadsakfflafasljdkfweioROU 32#@$@#%$#%tq#@$!!!!

  • He surly was nuts. Big time. But I still adore him. No matter what.

  • @CosmopolitanNo1 The only difference between insanity and genius is the (inept) intelligence of the observer.

  • I keep having to google all these vocabulary words he uses!

  • @Fupper16 I'm impressed that you could HEAR the words he uses...

  • ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

  • 14 people don't know what's up.

  • Hahahah that Glenn Gould.

  • The polar bear didn't like that too much.

  • Thank God for eccentrics like Glenn Gould, The world is a better place for him being here.

  • Where is this video from?

  • Glenn , absolut good, god is with You 100% , Glenn Gould my absolut inspirator. I dont need any studied proffessors!

  • The epic man!

  • Leonard Bernstein once said of Gould: "That nut's a genius."

  • People that put Gould down are only expressing their ignorance.

  • 2:08 "do i hear a vulnerable gazelle's cry of death?"

  • Aw, he can't be quite as egotistical as some people say, because he actually just ridiculed himself for even thinking of a play where he is the only human in it!

  • what is the last sentence he says? I cant understand.:-(

  • @Offin You messed up the words!. How about something in a slower tempo?

  • @Offin He says ' you messed up the words - maybe something in a slower tempo'

  • He sounds like Bert from bert and ernie

  • Profound but hilarious last 1/5 of the video.

  • he was THE MAN

  • I love glenn gould!

  • Glenn Gould is THE MAN.

  • @corovanmoro er... WAS the man, I guess, but his beautiful interpretations will live on.

  • Glenn is so funny. He could have been a great comedian as well.

  • @PlayMoreLoud I have a theory that anyone truly smart is already a great comedian, as I think the true source of any comedy is actually intelligence

  • I am an animal-man myself, this makes me cry sverdrups...

  • I am an animal-man myself, this makes my cry sverdrups...

  • I also love animals much more than humans. The older I get, the more.

  • fucking LOOOL

  • This is hilarious!!!! lol.

Ah, you gotta love the man.

  • What a fun video. I would have hummed Saint-Saens to the elephants personally.

  • Thank you for posting! I tried and I think, that indeed, birds may have the best relationship zu music. The cat just watched me but didn't really react.

  • I love Glenn's rendition of "Des Knaben Wunderhorn".

    Die Predigt hat g'fallen,

    sie blieben wie allen!

    Genius.

This clip is hysterical, thanks for posting.

  • LOL!!

  • This brings up an important question: Do animals feel moved by music like we do? I think it's needless to say that a fugue or an opera would be way over their heads, but simple frequency ratios and rhythmic organizations hold true whether you're a human or a cow. So there would have to be some sort of difference in how an animal hears a perfectly tuned fifth, for example, as opposed to some ugly discord. Maybe there are intelligent animals that can even appreciate simple pentatonic melodies.

  • I think the whole point of this video is over your head :P

  • Some animals can. Your Dog or your Cat will ignore the music like it was any other sounds. Some birds wil appreciate music, and even dance.

There are some humans that can't distinct music from other sounds, like cats or dog, but I don't know the name in English.

  • @b0ttomzone I feel what we humans call music is based on a more primordial level of tones and more importantly, the relation between at least two tones. And so, you can hear similar sound-feeling from related mammals in how they use tones. If you hear dogs whimpering while waiting for someone to return, you can hear how their natural understanding of sound is from the same basic foundation from which humans sense sound as having emotional meaning (birds are a whole complex topic entirely).

  • Lol! Wonderful, thank you so much for sharing!

  • Glenn Gould, humorous and with a kind heart.

(See also the video of his talking to children :))

  • I believe the pachyderms didn't appreciate Mr Gould's a-cappella rendition as much as the bovines.

  • Glenn!

  • SO WEIRD!!!!!!!!

  • he's a little cooked hahahaha i love the singing at the end

  • the audio is virtually non-existent. try re-posting this

  • watch in HQ, it's fine for me

  • Fantastic!

  • Gould could be a cure for depression, seriously.

  • @Offduty5Z66 Ill have to agree with that my friend

  • How so?

  • hahahaha, thats great!!!

  • He's a good speaker. Not sure about the singing.

  • Hahaha! Good ol' Glenn.

  • he speaks like norman mailer

  • Damm, this is one of those videos that are reaaaaaaalllllyy quiet .......

    (cant hear a thing!)

  • Haha, they couldn't stand his voice. Fortunately he was a pianist first and foremost, and a legendary one at that.

  • Love his recordings, but damn what a weirdo.

  • genius's tend to be loners and 'odd' by peoples perception... makes us 'normal' people look, well i suppose, normal

  • GG really seemed to be having a good time here -- well done!

  • Hmm didn't realise Mr Gould was mad.

  • Metro Toronto Zoo right there. Splendid.

Next time I'm there, I'll have to try singing to the polar bears.

  • I agree with GG in many respects. I think the elephant does too! Oh and the Polar bear! LOL just great!~cg5

  • Those poor elephants . . . I'm just joking. His singing is adorable.

  • Comment removed

  • poor animals... LOL

  • Glenn Gould was amazingly amazing. :-) That's all I can say.

  • No, no, no. He was far too brilliant and fantastic to be amazing let alone fit any adjective even the most colorful of vocabularies could conjur! :) He's so cute with his singing.

  • One of Canada's most overlooked ironists...

  • Really!?!

I should have sent him all of my shirts. How was he with collars?

  • Comment removed

  • I don't know why, but it's true. At the end of a hard day, if I am feeling incurably depressed, there's two things will pull me out; listening to Beethoven, or watching a video of Glenn just being his crazy self. I don't mean realy crazy at all, of course, he was most sane,...wacky!

  • we have the same interests.

  • 2:09 LOL!!!! whahaha trmpet!

  • Can you see the relation in Glenn Gould and Dr. Evil?

  • As much As i love him. He was such a pompous ass the latter half of his life. Bah

  • I don't see it.

  • It sounds like "There's a hole in your bucket, dear Liza dear Liza"

  • Pebantic aren't you?

    [sick]

  • Haha Goob one!

  • Wielki Glenn Gould

  • If you have been looking for conclusive evidence that Gleen was an Aspie, look no further.

  • Douche.

  • I miss him. Now we only have him on video. Great performer, the finest at interpreting Bach and a delight to listen to with his various antics!

  • I love him. Hah! That actually is something I would do, provided there were no human listeners.

  • This is a great video. Too many people see him as the unfeeling mathematical piano player that mastered Bach... He was much more than that, he had so much heart and passion for nature. A good example of his passion for nature that reminds me of this video in a lot of ways is his version of Beethoven's 6th symphony arranged by Franz Liszt for piano. I think he captures the mood and passion of that symphony more than most orchestras do.

  • hahahahaha :D

  • Yay! I loved it.

  • seems to me he's just a really talented and intelligent person not taking himself too seriously and having a good time of playing with the animals!

  • (lol) all the elephants start acting negatively. I guess in this case. You can't please them all.

  • Problem with humans. A genius yet fragile artist

  • If he were a teenager in this world right now, he would be a loser... but a genius loser.

  • Comment removed

  • Un1234I I think he would have been just as famous now - I think he was ahead of his time and would have loved the internet and modern ways of recording...

  • AsbergerZ!!!

  • LMAO !!!

  • It's spelled "Asperger's"

  • I know, that's why I used a capital Z.

    Thanks...

  • Well, he did use his father's chair till he died

  • OMG - this whole rant is SO ASPERGER'S SYNDROME!

Gould was an amazing musician.....his interpretations speak to me like few others....but my god, he lived in his own world

  • I have it also, but speculative diagnoses of famous people is not always a good idea. Even though Glenn Gould very likely had it.

  • Somebody can write me or traduce me what is he saying at the end of his song? Sorry, I am curious but I don't speak english very well.

    Thanks!!!

Oh! in case of the traslation, I speak french, italian and spanish...

  • Aux animaux - vous avez rate les paroles - peut-etre (on essaie) qqchose au tempo plus lente?

To the animals "You messed up the words - perhaps something in a slower tempo?"

  • ¡Ja, ja, ja!

Merci beaucoup! tu est trés gentil!

  • Bienvenue!

  • He has some of the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome. Perhaps he has this.

  • ゾウが逃げてきました。。。。。

  • "the elephant escaped" haha

  • We all have a little bit of him within us.

  • He reminds me of Gene Wilder's version of Willy Wonka

  • Wow.

This video goes to show that Glenn Gould was just as loopy as people say he was.

    Brilliant.

  • lol

  • Such a beautiful person

  • This is great. I hope there was something between him and these beasts!

  • There was. He left half of his sizable fortune and future royalties to the Humane Society and the other half to the Salvation Army.

  • Amazing video ! :))) super ! thanks for the post !

  • He doesn't sing bad at all. Just a little cuckoo. If you've noticed the animals actually did notice him, and that's quite unlike animals such as elephants.

  • the lioness's mug is priceless @ 2:07.

  • Gould is crazy, a total loon. Wish we had more like him. R.I.P.

  • Cool Video. Thanks for sharing!

  • he is so cute!
