I actually think the alternative era ended gradually in the late 90s because most of the bands that made great albums in the early 90s made albums that were just O.K. in the mid- to late 90s while ska punk and Britpop became the new alternative flavors of the month. I don't think that the popularity of any band besides Nirvana particularly depended on Cobain being alive.
