Thanks for this. Love the song, hate the series. Can't believe I watched the whole thing. (what was I thinking? Hope I don't get possessed by bad dirty knickers, corn flakes, lentils and Neil! Alka Seltzer please
Brings back some good memories. I saw these on the Pyramid Stage on a glorious sunny day in Glastonbury in 1986 and they were great. My mate managed to get backstage and meet a few of the band after the gig
thnx for showing this clip, Margo......I have enjoyed Amazulu ever since I saw the 'Excitible" video.....since then got to collected a few UK mags that featured the group..sad that they never made it big here in the USA
My 2 daughters were brought up on Amazulu along with Tom Tom club, B52's, Bow wow wow etc. I'm so glad I educated them with great music & none of this x factor shite!
I wish Amazulu would get back together like most bands are these days & hit the road! Me & mine would be 1st in the queue!!
This version is brilliant and utterly irresistible! Is it available anywhere other than this video clip (which has numerous interruptions from various Young Ones)?
The version released as a single is different and nowhere near as good as this.
@TheLovePlums - Hi I don't think this version was ever commercially available. I think we recorded it especially for the Young Ones, and the single and 12" versions were a different production, and over-egged in my humble opinion. It was all a long time ago and the details are a bit hazy. Cheers
@paddywishbone Sorry I don't know...I have it on a vhs tape, but have no means of transferring digitally. I'll have to look through my cassette (!) collection to see if I have a version good enough quality. I agree its better than the album version - 'produced' by Jerry Dammers (Specials), honestly I think we did a better job ourselves e.g. this one - I always preferred our demos to whatever the so-called producers that were foisted upon us did.
thank you for sharing this i remember seeing this show many years ago and the song stayed with me and i never remembered what the song was called or the artist. thanks to youtube others with similar interests found and posted the video.
I think I've ended up seeing Amazulu live more times than any other band. Always fun to watch - hope it was just as much fun for you to be in the band.
But more importantly ... did the lightbulb get changed?
Buleke wrote (Dec. 26th 2008):The album was 'Amazulu' released by Island Records in the UK. The track Moonlight Romance was originally released as both a single and an extended 12" version in about 1984. I think the album was licensed to Mango and Putumayo in the USA, probably deleted by now!
@Dutchmarc66 A VHS video compilation was also released at the same time as the album containing all vids to that point, bizarelly Too Good To Be Forgotton vid is only about 1 and a half minutes long though. Record company seemed to really screw Amazulu over later on, as I recall they were instrumental in insisting the band became a 3 piece (citing they couldnt afford the original line up). A long overdue CD re-release is surely overdue, Amazulu remain criminally overlooked!
Great music this has always been a favorite song of mine, nice to see posted. Could you share your experiences shooting this episode with The Young Ones?
Thanks for that. The house they filmed in was in 'Coddrington Road' in Bishopston, Bristol. The launderette they went to is still there, I believe and Bristol North Swimming baths was also the police station that Neil joined up in. Now and again, my mates and I used to bunk off school to watch it being filmed. We saw Madness do 'Our House'. But don't tell anyone though! The 'Keebab and Calculator' is called 'The Cock of the North' in Henleaze, still there too, I believe.
It certainly was. the house was in 'Codrington Road', not 'Coddrington'. My mistake! The latter 'Only Fools and Horses' were filmed in Bristol too. 'Nelson Mandela House' is on my fire stations ground!
I adore this song! Am I right in thinking it is called 'Moonlight Romance'?
'The Young Ones' was filmed in Bristol about ten minutes where I used to live, (my parents still live there), and in one episode you can see my house! (Tenuous link, I know!). The 'Fascist Pig Bank' they robbed in the final epsiode was a swimming pool I learnt to swim in. It has now closed, but still stands awaiting development.
So do I! Yes, it's called Moonlight Romance. I fell in love with it (and the cute lead singer!--apparently her name is Anne-Marie Ruddock) the first time I saw this Young Ones episode on MTV in the 80's here in the States.
Your band brought a lot of joy to everyone. The 80's were a great time to be alive to enjoy the music and your talent was very much enjoyed. Thank You.....
Hi all. I am the short-haired guitarist and its DEFINITELY not Basia. (My name is Margo, fyi). We recorded this in 1984. I played with Amazulu from 1982 -1986, when the group split in half and became a three piece, without the drummer, bass player and me. Glad y'all like the track.
The album was 'Amazulu' released by Island Records in the UK. The track Moonlight Romance was originally released as both a single and an extended 12" version in about 1984. I think the album was licensed to Mango and Putumayo in the USA, probably deleted by now!

No, I meant that she's not in the video at all. At least a VERY reliable source said that, and she got that info direct.
