they used to be really good... before the 80's IMO... but hey, the ladies love the disco tunes, so full respect to Kool and the Gang, despite the cheesy disco tunes :-) btw, FAT BREAK!!! Can imagine this in a Kool Herc set from the late 70's...
@djkaneck1 I though she might've sampled for "1 Thing" but, not sure. Someone said "Hate 2 Love You" but upon 1st listen I didn't catch any of this song there either.
Also sampled by Organized Konfusion from their first record on the song called "Intro", which incidentally also has the line "wack mcs, your time is up", sampled by Del on his second album.
This is probably my favorite Kool and The Gang track, Good Times being a close second. The early Kool and The Gang and Earth, Wind and Fire records were incredible!
You are so right there. I loved the early 'Kool' stuff and have this album. Early EWF awesome too with 'Keep your head to the Sky'. Nothing like this stuff today. All these groups are sampling because, sadly, they lack originality.
Good..I'm happy to know that someone mentioned "Take A Rest" by Gang Starr ..However, what about the famous, "Don't Sweat The Technique? [horns & drums]
Gotcha! It's amazing how a whole generation relates to songs by it's sample taken for another song. Mad Crazy. I should be mad but art and expression is eclectic so I just wonder and appreciate in my way and respect others for their way.
Thank You! I think you are right. I was trying to go off memory, 38 years is a long time. I do remember Roberta Flack promoting them to get the word out about this group of young men from North Jersey.
Don't comment if you don't get it. Didn't your parents teach you if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything, Ohh that's right, you were not in line when they were passing out home training.
More like this and KatG would be one of my favorite bands. But they went pop. :( Good pop, but not like this.

For anyone who came for Eric B and Rakim, the sample is at 2:07 and then 2:24

The break at 1:41 has been sampled by a lot of artists like:
A Tribe Called Quest - "Scenario"
Beastie Boys - "Professor Booty"
NWA -" Real Niggaz"
MC Brains - "Everybody's Talkin' about MC Brains"
X-Clan - "Shaft's Big Score"
and so on...

Thanks, I had been checking out the Ohio Players before I played some Kool & the Gang,
got a little cofused, guess I need a little more sleep..

A little Jazz and funk, the Ohio Players got it together. Rukuloe obviously has no taste
and sophistication when it comes to great music. The smooth sounds of the Ohio Players
will live on for ever. Thank you for posting.
kslo95 3 years ago
I agree that the Ohio Players were great, but what you are hearing now is Kool and the Gang, "Give It UP" 1969 debut lp.
LamontCJ 3 years ago
this originally appeared on K&TG's debut self-titled lp.

So many hip hop samples were taken from this hit, Gangstar, Take a rest was one of them

I'm a big Gangstar fan. True hiphop of the 90's. Nothin' like the original
