The original orchestration called for: trumpet (1), saxophone (1), clarinet (1), steel drums, an Arp synthesizer providing the bass line, a Fender Rhodes electric piano and regular drums. Then the recording engineers manipulated the sound to give it that "alien" quality to what was finally heard on the movie soundtrack.
