  • Yaoi !

  • @DensetsuShonen

    Yuri!

  • sir are you a homosexual !>?

  • First off I am a straight male. I just know a lot about japan.

New Half- Basically a trans gender guy. The inverted penis deal.

Futanari- This is a term that means something similar to Both or dual. It is in short a japanese reference to what english speakers would call a hermaphrodite. Which don't really exist per-se. As it is a sexual fantasy reference. A female body with both male and female genitals.

    There you have it. =D

  • Fabulous

  • i like girly guy myself...they just seems safe.

  • @MsSunhappy everyone thinks girly guys have to be gay.

    it's kind of annoying...

  • @IAmSuchANerdLol really? i suppose i read too much manga that it is a given girly guy is the strongest.

  • a friend of mine who teaches at high school here in japan tells me one of his kids has been skipping school for a week, a teacher went to track him down and find out what was wrong- turns out his classmates found out he was gay, beat the crap out of him and told him not to show himself at school again.

  • How bout a girl dating a girl? How is Les/Bi tolerated?

  • @WootWoot360 straight girls hold hands all the time, I've even seen the occasionall kiss (not a snog but a wee peck). Whether you could be totally out about it I've no idea but PDAs are no bother

  • 03:12 Guess you didnt like that question. Hehe.

  • I am not gay, but last year I stayed in a hotel in Kabukicho in Tokyo and the main gay quarter was a few blocks away. There were numerous openly gay bars which seemed to be very busy, so there is obviously a strong gay scene available if required. (Kabukicho is in Shinjuku and is the main red light district in Tokyo, although it tends to cater for Japanese only).

  • Just an FYI:

    Transsexual = Post-op strictly

    Transgender = Pre-op or No-op

Cross Dresser = Just some guy in a dress.

Japan has a lot of the third time and some of the other two on TV.

  • @fallendeacon Actually;

Transsexual = Anyone who's mental gender doesn't match their physical birth sex (The terms pre-op, post-op, or non-op is usually tagged on the front of it).

Crossdresser = Anyone who wears clothes of the opposite sex (Which includes the term transvestite, who usually derive sexual pleasure from it).

Transgender = Anyone who bends the gender role, and can include those listed above, or any other variation of non-gender normative expression.

  • @AliceSympathy Hello... You are misunderstanding the meaning of "gender" and "sex." Transsexual can only be a person who has undergone a sex change.

Google some sources or look up "gender" in the dictionary if you don't believe me. This is a fact.

Other than that point, what you said is exactly the same as what I said.

  • @fallendeacon A transsexual is someone who lives as and identifies as the opposite of their biological sex. Surgery isn't required, necessary, to live as the opposite sex. Transgender, on the other hand, encompasses a whole load of other sexual and gender variants - under which cross-dressing and transvestites would fall. People simply "dressing" as the opposite sex. But being transsexual is also under the transgender label. It's all very complicated, really. ^_^

  • @AkumaXKami

Check wikipedia for Transgender vs Transsexual.

It isn't complicated, but many people misunderstand how it works (including you at the moment). Transgender is not a general label (despite how the wikipedia is laid out). The latin literally means to change identity of sex-oriented behavior. It is entirely possible to have someone take horomones/have surgery while still identifying with their previous gender (although I couldn't begin to imagine why they would)

  • @AkumaXKami

(continued) Transsexualism has a specific meaning that refers to the MEDICAL definition of their "assigned sex." By requisite, a true Transsexual must be on hormones and post surgery. Anyone else using the term is just misusing it (in the medical context).

That said, there are some psychologists that have published material in attempt to redefine the word by having a transsexual scale (outlining phases), but that doesn't make the original, root definition any different.

  • @AkumaXKami

(continued part 2) In summary, most people transition like this: Experimentation of breaking gender role (cross dressing, etc.) > Change of Gender Identity (Transgender and all of its sub-types) > Operation and Hormonal therapy to change their assigned Sex (Transsexual).

Although it is tempting to classify all as "Transgender," it's important to remember someone COULD entirely skip the gender changing process and do a sexual reassignment immediately.

  • Gender identity & sexual orientation are two very different things. Transgender girls who live full time are not gay or "straight guys". They live as females.

  • gays,,, ive seen gay in japan that has really pretty faces, but when i hear them talked, damn! voice lower than mine,,lol

  • what about girl/girl ??? xD

  • there's even a video of a gay pride parade in tokyo on youtube. so there certainly must be some sort of gay association

  • how is bullying in there?. bosy/boys, girls/girls, boy/girls

  • being gay is more difficult in japan than the US. certainly in entertainment (mockery) it is accepted. in the REAL japanese culture? no. and it wont be any time soon.

  • @Dyaisuran But they would be quiet about it in general

  • Yaoi is everywhere!

  • The gay and lesbian community in Tokyo is in ni-chome. That's ni-chome, shinjuku :D It's small, but there are PLENTY of bars for guys/guys girls/girls and gay mix.

  • 3:11 I know what that means!

  • from what i know, despite the fact that the Japanese franchises sex and are very open to sexual matters - that they are fairly conservative when it comes to homosexuals. I doubt you will see many openly gay couples holding hand in the street. I'd say Europe is probably more gay-friendly than Japan

  • @xxxxmimi Coming from Germany and having lived in Japan, I say you are probably right.

I am not gay, so I can't tell first hand, but usually you can do whatever you prefer sexually as long as you keep it to yourself. They have the most outlandish sex related shops/bars/clubs/venues/hotels and stuff.

BUT, you keep that to yourself. So it is not unusual for gay man to be married and get their kicks elsewhere. Straight ppl also have affairs, which is tolerated, but they must not do so openly.

  • I've heard about ppl not wanting to show that they're gay, so after I moved here I started actually look hard for two guys holding hand and in my for month thats I've lived in Tokyo I've seen one couple that has been holding hand. But they were so cute together that I couldn't help smiling and they didn't care at all about if anyone saw them :)

  • what about girls dating girls?

  • Lesbians there aren't open and out? This almost seems like the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy over in America.

  • I'm very girly myself and would look for a guy who has masculinity to balance the relationship. I'd would guess most are girly but are there any masculine?

  • @MASKROSE8

    I guess so :-)

  • @MASKROSE8 personal suggestion, if you want a guy that likes guys you have to act like a guy :X please don't take offense to that, it's meant to be constructive.

  • When you say goodbye on your videos you kind of sound like Desmond from Lost!

    Just a thought.xD

  • Just curious, is gay marriage allowed in Japan? Or is it still banned?

  • @iMisaProduction

    Never even heard it mentioned..

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom

Did you enjoy giving away your Nationality?

  • @TsurugiMinko Can't it be neutral?

  • @iMisaProduction On Wikipedia I read that gay marriage is recognized "but not performed." (Because your comment got me wondering :D )

  • @iMisaProduction It's banned, except that gay couples who have married outside of Japan in a country where it is legal are allowed to return to Japan as a legally married couple. Or at least that's what wikipedia says. : P

  • @iMisaProduction they don't have them in japan but they do recognize marriages that take place outside japan

  • Shinjuku has a significant gay area in 2 chome.

  • You talk about television but why don't you mention yaoi/yuri? It's even big outside of Japan :D I find it cute and I am not even gay myself...

  • I read in a travel guide once that the area of Shinjuku in Tokyo is like the gay center of Tokyo.

  • Another reason why I love Japan! <3

  • lol @ the gay club add next to the videos... it's like a trigger. XD

  • Wow, even thought ur not japanese, you know so much about Japan and you are very correct too! that's so cool! Keep up the great work!

  • I lived in Japan for a while now. I´m living in a small town. And here I´ve never heard of someone who said he or she is homosexual. The gossiping is really strong, so everybody will think that person is weird. I asked to my friend what would happen if they said to their parents that they are gay and they say their parents would forbid it. In southern of Japan gay is not really ok.

  • You're Australian? I thought you were English this whole time. :/

  • You say you don't think there's any beating up or gay vashing in the streets. Would you think it's possible that gay bashing may be more hidden and secretive in Japan, that maybe it's not something that would make the news?

I'm not accusing, I'm just interested if that sounds like a Japanese reaaction to a problem.

  • @DontTouchMyVicodin

    No.

Violence is rare here.. so it makes the news.

  • some newhalfs are very pretty, especially the ones who like the lolita look :-) if i ever got to visit japan, i would love to go out with a newhalf to see what it's like...

  • What about lesbians?

  • @AmandaPizza

    Pretty much the same story..

  • there is just one wort that comes to my mind when i think about beeing gay in japan : Shinjuku ni-chome.

  • I can't imagine it would be too hard overall to blend in being gay in Japan. As far as I've read and heard, it was a common practice back in their early history. Plus, I don't think anyone would really make a scene of their sexuality publicly there, whether straight or gay so no surprise they aren't standing out. =P

Plenty of 'gay pride parade' footage on here (set in Harajuku mostly in the side bar of related vids for this video), so I'm sure there's hope for the gay within Japan. =]

  • I love newhalfs. It gives woman direct competition, and being a capitalist, competition is always good for the end-user.

  • i heard that if a gay couple want to be like married, they could be 'adopted' into the family. is that true?

  • @kittycathappy

    Never heard that one,,,

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom oh. so i think i heard wrong.

  • Historically and traditionally, homosexuality was very common and accepted. For a period, it was expected of male (there were female thus the specific note) samurai to have sexual relations with other males since they were of equal station. However only with females as part of procreation.

  • Does he mean "transvestite" when he says "transsexual" ; HUGE difference!

  • @HumanIeague002 do you mind explaining to me the difference :D idk

  • @caldevera transsexual= person who has had their genitals surgically changed to look like the opposite sex. they also, usually, take estrogen or testosterone to further the change.

Transvestite= person who merely dresses like the opposite sex, usually men dressing like women.

  • @HumanIeague002 ahh..ok.thanks a lot.

  • haha u did the tilt head hiss!

  • It's safe and there are loads of gay bars un Tokyo, but rights-wise, things are slowly moving (transgender individuals only recently got the right to change their names and be free from discrimination when renting public housing). It's moving along though.

  • For anyone wanting to know more about how to survive in Japan as a gay identified individual, you must get the magazine/reader Badi (pronounced Body) when you get there. Unless you are gay and have lived there for a long time you might not know this. This monthly book unites all of the underground gay society. I am gay and lived in Japan for 4 years with a Japanese boyfriend. There is a gay scene in Japan, its just kinda invisible.

  • @mattkohut It's a gold magazine, I agree.

And yes, the invisibility of Japan's gay scene is slightly sad--but at least WE know it's there!

  • I've allways thought that there was a historical acceptance to same-sex couples in Japan. I know there is plenty of 16-17th century liturature written on the subject (in Japanese.)

Thank you for making this course, very fun and informative.

  • thank you for posting this.... many straight men would feel like there man would be taken away if they posted it. Good job mate!

  • @newyorkjapan

    Thanks for watching ^_^

  • Thanks for the information ^^!

From what I know it's very accepted in the sense that you can be gay as long as you hide it from the people that make or break you- in most ppl's cases its anyone tied to their work/families. Definitely worth checking out bbs sites etc. for more personal accounts on this!

  • The character Subaru in Sakura Wars: So Long My Love is quite intriguing as a possible transgender or genderqueer. My interest in "her" has kind of sparked a little extra research on Youtube over the past few days about genderqueers and whatnot lately.

  • where do you come from originally? I have never actually heard someone pronounce the word "assume" as "ashoom" :)

  • @ribiselaffe

    probably australian?

  • i know that you probobly wouldn't experience this at all. But in terms of same sex relationships- i understand that being gay is pretty much fine- can i assume that also applies to women? (as in lesbian relationships)

  • @KashukoProject

    Yes.

Pretty much fine.. but discretion is wise.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom can a latino as in from Central America and other places get married or have a relationship with a Japanese man/woman? i've been thinking this alot and wanted to know about this Y-Y

  • @FULLCOLORSVARiATiON

    Sure, why not.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom Thanks for answering back now i feel at ease ^-^

  • Totally agree, I often get gay vibes, but in the 8 years I've been here, noone I've know openly admits to it. Once when I was travelling with my wife, I saw a male couple who were obviously "together". I think more than anything, people are intrigued by it as an oddity/novelty, but at the same time neither side wants to open up or start prying.

  • Are same sex marrages legal in Japan?

  • @Fruitjoke

    No.

  • I was trying to look up regular bars in tokyo for a story I wrote and I got tons of results and like the first 50 were gay bars... so I think if your gay youl have no trouble finding something!

  • It really shouldn't be hard to be gay there.

  • Shinjuku District 2 in Tokyo is a Gay and Lesbian district, my friends dared me to use the bathroom in the area.... good times, good times lol

  • you speak so maturely about this. thats pretty rare where im from...

  • Your voice is so cute!! I just can't get over it!

  • When I was in Tokyo and Yokohama (Navy) I saw a lot of men who dressed in wild colors, super, super thin pants and long reddish wigs, what not, and they dated girls. You're right, Japan is a fairly effete society, but I was never hit on or felt threatened in the least. You are right that the girls are not easy. LOL But they can be had. You have to be good at it but it can be done.

  • I don't remember the name of the book, but I read a book about a hell's angel and one of the things he wrote was about some people in Japan wanting to start a branch of the HAs in Japan, and when he got there and got off the plain, the two guys she was meeting were holding hands as a sign of friendship. I don't remember it all, but he ends up in a Japanese prison, and he talks about that in the book too.

  • Isn't the guys having feminine features a trend in Japan? So that doesn't entirely mean that they are gay, right? (Unless they are wearing the fake boobs and a dress then never mind.)

  • @kphamu If they're wearing fake boobs and a dress, I'd go with 'crossdresser' or 'transgender' rather than gay.

  • shinjuku ni chrome!!! gay part of tokyo

  • You probably hear this all the time but I love your accent :P

  • is it the same idea with lesbians?

  • there are actually websites in the internet that covers around this subject... and i think most gay people knew about them... there is also a district in Tokyo called the Gay District and i think its very famous to most gay people and lesbians aswell... its located in Shinjuku Ni-chome and i think most people knew about them...

  • hmmm....what about lesbians? is that accepted?lol im not one xD but i'd like to know if there's a double standard :O

and is tokyo like the L.A. of japan? xD

  • Comment removed

  • Well at least they are not hated and crap like in America D;

  • gay uuuuuuummm transexual uuuuuuuumm potato uuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmm.......

    lol

    :3

  • Lol, I think you've been in Japan a little long! Your doing the head tilt.

  • Great video!

I perhaps have a bit more experience in the gay scene here in Japan, so I've tried to describe some of its aspects in my video response. I hope it helps.

    Cheers.

  • asian chicks have no visible genitals

  • tnx for the info:) it was fun learning about this...

  • dont know how to put this but i wonder if there are Hispanic ppl in japan reason is because im an american with a hispanic heritage and i wanna know if there has been any mexican influences in japan other than the Don Taco chips

  • most japanese men seem gay to me,

and most japanese women seem like they're 15yo xD

i know its not like that lol;p

  • I would be delighted to go to Japan just to get away from the overbearing machismo of the west. It's a tedious overcompensation every time.

The funny thing is, the ultra-masculine boys always think that I'm gay, and treat me accordingly (total disdain) while all of the gays that I've met can immediately tell that I'm straight.

  • I would argue that television isn't gay friendly. I feel like gay people are never portrayed as average people, but that they focus on extreme examples. It's like the liberache thing. It's okay to be a flamboyant icon, but actually accepting homosexuality as a social norm, or a valid lifestyle? Japan is still far far away from that. There is a super big scene in tokyo and osaka, but I would be willing to bet that over 90% of the people there are completely closeted.

  • i decided to ask this question on this video, seems appropriate.

You know the visual kei movement in japan, bands dressed like women.

it`s not mainstream and the clothes ruin a lot for them, why do they do it, is it rebellious, is that why they do it?

  • @Twiggyay

So many dudes here love a chance to get into a dress...

    Effeminate guys are considered cool...

Just seen differently here than elsewhere..

    still baffles me, though!!

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom it is pretty cool, "yellow" guys can actually pass for being woman when dressed like one.

I asked the question because my favourite band dresses... uhm... female...

Note; i used yellow instead of asian, people from the middle east is also asian, wasn`t trying to be racist, i am white, black people are black, and Japanese people are yellow xD

  • @Twiggyay

Actually, most Japanese people are a beautiful brown color.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom I know, black people aren`t black, they`re brown,

My favourite guitarist is from japan and he has a "white" skin colour (pretty close, even without make-up) by nature, so that asian (ahh! hate that word!) people are yellow isn`t true, it has just turned out that way...

  • @Twiggyay How do you hate the real word and prefer the racist word over it?

  • @Hakakuno I don't even know how you made that connection. i just used well known stereotypes to express my opinion, not to be racist.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom I've been there a couple of times, I always noticed they're all kinda pale.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom are you sure? the media tells me they all have shiny peachy skin that shines in any lighting situation and repels dirt ; )

  • Yes as a mexican I approve this color

    @TheJapanChannelDcom

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom Hiroki Narimiya is an example of beautiful brown Japanese skin.

  • @Twiggyay not cool dude not cool. please stop making the white race(me) look stupid. what next you gonna call homosexual people rainbow? common man. (gay pride btw <3)

  • @angelfire18 I wasn`t trying to be racist, but East asian people being yellow is a well known stereotype and i see no harm in using it instead of asian, which refers to all people from asia.

and no, i wouldn`t call gay people rainbow, their skin colour does not resemble a rainbow, but black people look to a certain degree black and east asians yellow,

I am white myself, and i am not a Homophobe, i`m not even sure of my own sexuality...

  • @Twiggyay That is a horrible description Twiggy, it sounds wrong in every possible way.

  • @shippyssdgfhh I`m having a hard time figuring out what you are replying to.

  • @Twiggyay Your description of the various races, I really find it offensive to be honest. Yellow people? Really?

  • @shippyssdgfhh Well, White people have always been called white. black people have been called black. and eastern Asian people can sometimes look a bit (a bit) yellow so that has been their stereotypic label. i don`t agree with it but at the time i thouught it would deliver my mesage well.

  • @Twiggyay Understanable Twiggy, but do we need to reuse it? I think a better term would be Asian? Oriental? African American? Caucasian? :) Yellow, black white whatever, those terms do not justify people at all. And also, Asian don't look Yellow, Black people are not black, brown would be the best term and White People are not white, more like creamish color.

  • @shippyssdgfhh Well, it`s not y fault that these stereotypes have been a part of daily speech.

  • @Twiggyay Dressing visual kei=/=dressing 'female'. I'm going to assume you simply misunderstood the two since visual kei is rather big here. Especially in jrock

  • @CidnieV Not everyone knows what Visual kei is... and it is dressing feminine/"female".

(now let's assume Visual kei is a music genre)

I've heard Visual kei isn't as popular in Japan as you would think.

  • I know Shinjuku Ni-Chome has a LOT of gay bars and dance places ^^ Its supposed to be a huge party area I don't know about a stroll through the park but, I just know a lot of homosexuals and even straight people like to go there! Lots of lights. Hope this helps^^

  • I believe Shinjuku-ni Chome has a lot fof gay bars. Actually i have seen that there are a lot of homosexual people there :D Its a big party area ! Hope this helps ^^

  • Interesting. Keep it happy in Japan.

  • I don't know for sure, but I've been told being gay anywhere was a real pain in the ass.

  • Hi are you a friend to gimmeaflakeman victor?

  • Effeminate would describe at least 50-70% of the men in Japan. Maybe it's cultural...but looking around me I see what I would consider a man in girl's clothing, with a girl's attitude. Go figure. It doesn't bother me (now)...you get used to it.

  • @mekugi

    Indeed!

I always say I would prefer to sit next to an effeminate guy on the train (clean and tidy!) than next to some smelly macho man!

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom Guess You wont like sitting next to me then lol, but seriously I don't think being macho means being dirty and smelly... I don't know how macho I can be considered but I really don't like going out anywhere if I haven't taken a shower and I mean shower once a day not every time I go out of the house, can't take too many showers in a day either

  • thank you!

you are very nice and your videos are informative and insightful

  • america called themselves a free country yet they are behind japan in gay rights

  • @neonaction america is not free country, search in google, stupid american laws, youll see what i mean...

  • Interesting. Much love for Japan.

  • I can't believe I know this... but the gay scene in Tokyo is in an area called, Nityoume.

  • the truth is...even though asian countries are known to be very conservative....they are actually a lot more open to gay people especially within the entertainment industry..be it in east asia, south east asia, etc...of course not all but you guys get the point :D

  • what about lesbians?

  • @nonconformistloner

    Same story.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom ありがとう がざいます

  • @nonconformistloner ございます...

  • @chchchchill ございます...?ありがとうございます...?

  • @nonconformistloner oh just cause you said がざいます

  • @chchchchill well i like to really polite and my japanese teacher always says if are not sure which level to use go with the highest.

  • @chchchchill oh yeah i do that some times

    i type as i think

  • hey, i am a japanese gay boy and i truly agree with what you said. There are so many sissy queens on tv shows but very few gay people come out . Some straight people here just can't understand that boy/girl next door can be gay. and yeah, there IS a famous gay street in Tokyo, it's called Shinjuku-Ni-chome, im longing to go there...

  • I've been to a gay bar in Japan, and it was in a small city.

  • you tilted your head and sucked through your teeth. lolz.

  • i have seen a lot of your videos but not all of them. anyone of them talking about conformity in japan?

it would be really nice to have one of those.

    5/5

  • @ziguloi

That topic comes up in a number of videos ^_^

  • It's generally rather hard to use your gaydar in Asia.

  • What about lesbians?

  • While homosexuality had never been viewed as a sin in Japanese society

  • @tripleraven

    Indeed.

  • i feel like it would be very hard to tell who is gay and who isn't in Japan, because what we consider gay traits in America are not necessarily the same in Japan.

  • You can't tell who is gay and who isn't because of "gay traits" anyway. There are people who may have "gay traits" that aren't gay and people that don't have any that are gay.

  • @katashitun

    I agree.

I have a gay friend who is one of the toughest and scariest looking dudes I know.

Stereotyping sexuality by style is silly ^_^

  • Very true!
