People say the game is "quirky" and "childlike". But, I think if the game is played in its entirely or multiple times, you won't get the "quirky" and "childlike" feeling. The game is really subtle. It need time to be played for its true colors to be felt.

This game looks awesome. I've had really bad luck getting a copy though. First seller I bought from never sent the game, and the second time I tried buying it I got a defective copy. Someday I'll get around to playing though :p Great video.
I rented this game as a kid for the same reason: the gigantic box. When I was 6, it looked like a minivan on the shelf. I was too young to understand some of it and didn't get very far, but I had fun playing it and would really like to play it again. I'm yet to see a copy for less than a C note tho. No way I am paying nearly twice the amount of a brand new 360/PS3 game for a game that has been out for 15 years.
The Super Nintendo had the best RPGs. Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy II (IV) and III (VI), the Soul Blazer Trilogy, Lufia I and II, Breath of Fire I and II, and so many others. They just don't make RPGs like they used to. I think the last RPG I really enjoyed was Final Fantasy IX, and Mother 3 of course. Since then, I haven't had a great RPG experience in a long time.

Earthbound is far more than worthy to be on Virtual Console because Saturo Iwata was one of the developers. The only reason why it is not on VC is simply because of copyright issues.
I swear to god i didn't hear of earthbound until super smash bros. (ness was my favorite character and owned everyone on there) so i got a emulator "znes to be specific" as im playing it my first impression was its gonna be a boring game and the only reason i continued to play was because of the music, but 20-30 minutes into the game i swear i couldn't put the keyboard down for at least another hour, and im thinking "WHY THE HELL DIDN'T THEY PROMOTE THIS GAME!"

I heard about this in EGM or something when I was about 16... it was an add with Scratch and Sniff!! There was a hamburger and a scratch and sniff....oh you just spoke out against that as I was typing...hrm...w/e it totally made me want the game haha... I was already into RPG's via SoM and Chrono Trigger so...
That's awesome. I was also into SoM, Chrono Trigger etc when I picked this up as well.
Although, much like Samtron here, it was the large, colorful box that drew me to the game. I knew nothing about it yet before I knew it I was completely addicted. I didn't know what to expect. The cartoonish, childish look almost pushed me away but once I was into it there was no going back.
I don't really want to play EarthBound for the first time on an emulator, but I'm probably going to end up doing so. I'm totally against emulation, but Nintendo no longer make Super NES's or Super NES games, therefore even if I buy the game second hand (which is the only way to now) they'll not make any money from it. So in conclusion I'm against emulation for consoles that Nintendo still have in production (such as the DS or Wii), but SNES/NES games shouldn't be a problem.
I really hope all the MOTHER/Earthbound games come to 3DS... If not... Then what? I hope Nintendo does it... with proper advertising and support they can make BILLIONS!!! Come on people, we need to spread the word and demand what we want.
Im from the uk, this game was never even released over here and neither has any mother game before or since. When I later played earthbound on my snes emulator (naughty but hey if nintendo would give it a VC release then balls to them!) i discovered that it was my favourite rpg of all time...NINTENDO! I heard about this in EGM or something when I was about 16... it was an add with Scratch and Sniff!! There was a hamburger and a scratch and sniff....oh you just spoke out against that as I was typing...hrm...w/e it totally made me want the game haha... I was already into RPG's via SoM and Chrono Trigger so...

That's awesome. I was also into SoM, Chrono Trigger etc when I picked this up as well.
Although, much like Samtron here, it was the large, colorful box that drew me to the game. I knew nothing about it yet before I knew it I was completely addicted. I didn't know what to expect. The cartoonish, childish look almost pushed me away but once I was into it there was no going back.

I don't really want to play EarthBound for the first time on an emulator, but I'm probably going to end up doing so. I'm totally against emulation, but Nintendo no longer make Super NES's or Super NES games, therefore even if I buy the game second hand (which is the only way to now) they'll not make any money from it. So in conclusion I'm against emulation for consoles that Nintendo still have in production (such as the DS or Wii), but SNES/NES games shouldn't be a problem.

I really hope all the MOTHER/Earthbound games come to 3DS... If not... Then what? I hope Nintendo does it... with proper advertising and support they can make BILLIONS!!! Come on people, we need to spread the word and demand what we want.

Im from the uk, this game was never even released over here and neither has any mother game before or since. When I later played earthbound on my snes emulator (naughty but hey if nintendo would give it a VC release then balls to them!) i discovered that it was my favourite rpg of all time...NINTENDO! EARTHBOUND ON VC NOW! I'm sick of the alleged copyright infrienging crap you're spouting about the game. It was only made in 1994/95 surely there were copyright rules not much different from now?

Also yes...it is not only my favorite RPG, it is my favorite game of all time. Nothing will beat it, just like there will never be any band better than the beatles (which is amazing that they make a reference to the beatles in the game)

My god... in this time filled with Call of Duty and more FPS and shoot everything that moves games... its good to remember this game series... An RPG series wich only has 3 games, but these games are just wonderful.

I finally got to play Earthbound after all this time I looked at it and thought "Wow, that looks amazing and fun."
It has pretty much been a perfect game this far. o_o

I just realized after seeing this video, that I had played Earthbound without knowing it when I was a kid. Now I kind of hate myself for not taking the game when my cousin asked if I wanted it. I need to eBay this game sometime :D

If you mean people just like cause other people say it's cool, well might I point out the games you mentioned earlier are MUCH more like that than Earthbound. I don't like Halo or CoD but people always try to tell me they're so awesome and I should try them.

There are the people who only play it because others are and then those who hate it because others play it.

@falconriffle What makes you think I haven't tried them? I HAVE played Halo and I didn't like it. And I like Earthbound for it's humor and how fun it is, not because someone told me to. People tell me Pokemon sucks. Do I still play it? YES! Now I hope we can stop this argument it's taking up WAY too much space in the comments.
