  • Shaliapin, Chehov, Tolstoi, Pyshkin, Chaikovski, Dostoevski,...... To understand how deep is the opera you better understand words and must know Russian history. I am crying.

  • Mary Garden, then Director of the new Chicago Opera, engaged Chaliapin to sing Boris Godunov for the Grand Opening of the New Chicago Opera House in 1927. She spent $550,000 for the elaborate Costumes and Sets, which were later sold to the San Francisco Opera Company when Chicago declared bankruptcy in the early 1930's. The Lyric Opera of Chicago borrowed these sets and costumes to mount a new Boris with Boris Christoff in the title role. I was privileged to see that in 1961!
