Because of character limits, I decided to go with a two parter. I dislike Mike Arrington as much as I dislike Apple and their shiny line of iBricks. But that doesn't change the fact that both Microsoft and Google both realize our current interface is dead wrong. We love the taskbar because a.) it's what we're used to and b.) nothing better is widespread yet. That will change, just as mice and keyboards inevitably will be replaced with neural input, and it's naive to think we're already done.
I realize this is really old, but this video shows almost a complete lack of vision. Computers are a really new thing still, and to say that Windows got it right already is very wrong. I love Windows, and struggle myself to see a future where we no longer have a desktop or desktop icons, but trust me, the day is coming. High end 3D games are running in WebGL, thanks to faster and faster internet speeds, and many complex programs can be, will be, or already have been ported to javascript.
mrhogg you're being a deeyock talking the way you do in this vid about "mouth full of cock" and such, not really funny or relevant.
Re; Google cloud computing - great email client and calendar but if the rest of their cloud apps are anything like Google Docs, they will be ugly and slow and require multi-clicks to unfold and access features. My reason for returning to Firefox and dumping Chrome? No place to grab the window top with lots of tabs, no free VideoDownloadhelper, no free AdBlock.
Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher are the most disastrous hosts I've ever seen. Both interrupt like fiends whose mothers never taught them that it's rude to interrupt. Kara Swisher was even more useless during the All Things Digital interview in 2007 with Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. The Wall Street Journal is a world class publication. It's amazing that these two clowns are the best the WSJ can come up with to interview titans of industry.
Do keep in mind that this is marketed for netbooks, where the concept is quite understandable. This is not a OS for laptops or desktops. How much "real work" can you do on a netbook?
And to some degree there actually are tools for work. Google Documents for an example.
And about the "browser is the os" or whatnot, both you and they are right. It's an OS - linux - running a browser - chromius. But the browser is the only interface you have, so it's a browserOS.
Microsoft owns the market, It's almost like saying A new Source of light is going to take over the Sun..... The Sun owns the Market of daylight.. Lol.. Poor Google. Unless there OS Gives people 50.000.000 for buying it, it wont go anywhere.
The biggest problem with Google Chrome OS is that it is going to be just another Linux distro. Linux is hard even to use for experienced Windows users, mainly because of the way software is installed. Unless you are technically savvy with coding and using command consoles, Linux will just be a foreign language. Of course, you can download and install packages through the repositories using package managers, but thats not always easy. Chrome needs to be something new, yet familiar to grab share.
once you download the chrome browser, it's it a virus that can not be taken off. it runs in the backgrond and periodically will chat with DNS via svchost. Why? it owns your computer from thence on, and your computer will be begin to run odd services, new services, and data transfer. I noticed between installs it creats a type lag in many instances. key logger??
i see chrome OS as a dual boot option at best. If everything is on the web then what the hell do u do when u dont have a signal. I just hope the chrome os brings more attention to linux
I can see this becoming popular in netbooks and such. All my family (and most people, honestly) primarily needs is *just* the web and maybe a word processor. For those who need Adobe suite, to game, edit video, etc... a standard OS will be required.
That said, the former is a HUGE chunk of the world. I can see Google's product making some headway.
I hear the Chrome OS Troll Edition will run exclusively on trial editions of the Palm Pre. Chrome OS matters because you have to sync a Palm Pre on Windows ME to boot it up.
Sounds like Arrington swallowed too much Goo[gle].
Ehhh... Google Chrome OS isn't out yet. Likely they intend to take advantage of their yet unreleased HTML5 specific apps and coding. Google's working hard to transform the web from a time-wasting tool into an entire platform itself. That's probably what Chrome OS is for: demonstrating the power of Google's upcoming web apps. It's meant for the Internet of tomorrow, not the Internet of today.
The web's been a platform for a long time, and Google's apps run just fine on other browsers. As far as HTML 5 goes, other browsers will be supporting it, too.
What will Chrome do that another browser can't? What will a terribly stripped-down OS do that a feature-filled OS can't?
Exactly what Google said it would: speed, simplicity and security. They plan to upgrade the web with things O3D so that desktop apps become irrelevant bloatware, and then take them out so that they don't encumber, complicate or compromise your system. It's an interesting idea, really, and I expect it not to be ready by 2010 like they claim, but it shows potential to be something good.
It's not anything different from the rest of the web, though. Everyone's trying to make things fast, simple, and secure.
Irrelevant bloatware? That's just shifting the burden of bloat to the web; it'd still be bloated, because people would still want ALL of their features. And anyway, all apps going onto the cloud isn't going to happen; it can't.
So is Firefox, and they have been doing a pretty good job. They've already implemented HTML5, native OGG Theora video playback and numerous other tech to help move the web forward. Plus there's the tons of add-on's one can download for free to add any extra functionality a person may desire.
Google OS won't be good for me, I don't see how I can run all my audio production/editing and DJ programs from online, plus how do I store over 2TB of music, production tools/effects, and gain easy access to them when I don't have internet. Plus I don't want to DJ a gig that relies and internet connectivity, and if the music stops - "Oh, just give me a second it looks like the venue's router is losing it's connection..." If I was someone just pushing papers and documents around...maybe
Do you really DJ on Windows? I would think as a disk jockey that you would use Mac OS X, if you're using a computer at all (which given the way mp3s compress quality, I highly suggest not doing).
Either way, the majority of people are not DJs, and rather use their computer for word processing, surfing the web, and the occasional game. Chrome OS, with the web applications HTML5 will invariably bring can definately solve that.
Either way, it's meant for netbooks, not 2 TB storage hubs.
Yeah I use Windows for DJ'ing only because it's a lot cheaper to replace a laptop than a MacBook, I use a Mac for home recording and editing, plus all my files are at least 320kbps, if I'm ripping from a CD/Vinyl though I actually keep the audio as 32-bit float wav files - hence why I need the storage space :-) You are right about most users, Google will definitely have to make it the most user-friendly linux distro to date if they want to grab more of the market share
That's because you use your computer as a workstation, you're a DJ. The same as graphical artists, developers, etc... They all use their actual general-purpose computers as powerful workstations.
But for some people, they're using a full-capable computer just to surf the web. And it's an incredible pain in the ass, because computers get viruses, you need to update software, it breaks and you need to backup files, etc... That's the gap Google wants to fill with Chrome OS.
True, I know for people like my mom who works with health insurance I know it would help her and possibly companies in general if they're just using computer to push and edit documents around - I just hope Google makes this the most user-friendly Linux distro to date, I installed Ubuntu on my girlfriend's netbook to see if she would like it - that lasted for a month actually and then she wanted Windows 7, but I know either one she can easily check her farm on FarmVille lol
Holy crow is this Tyler from Mountain View? It's David - like from band and stuff, if it's not though then forget I ever said that lol, I'm already planning on using it exactly as a secondary OS, I just realized one advantage might be computer security/viruses since it's based off of Linux, haven't run into a virus yet with Ubuntu, definitely can't say the same for Windows and Mac, although mostly Windows lol
Haha wow small world! Yeah I've been running Ubuntu for about the same time too, love messing around with the Jack audio stuff and managed to revive an old laptop bought at Goodwill with a copy of Xubuntu (take that Windows 98). Oh check your Facebook I found you lol
GODDAMN this is freaking awesome!! Somebody had to say what everybody with common sense was thinking about Chrome OS, might as well be a Walt Mossberg puppet.

@gothikgamer How is it untrue?
How can Google steal ANY market share when their "OS" is ran from inside their "competitor's" OS?
I'd love to be present at that Microsoft board meeting:
"So, apparently fewer people are using integrated windows features, opting instead to use a web app by Google."
"Have Windows 7 sales decreased?"
"No, people are still buying computers with 7 preloaded, and upgrades are steady"
"Excellent. Any more news?"
