  • That intro is sublime. The chord at 0.34!

  • No, I meant Disc 4 World Map

  • Some parts are similar to FFIX OST's Iifa Tree (well, actually, that track is similar to this)

  • Jesus. As if Yes, King Crimson and Gentle Giant weren't enough, now I'll start hardcore listening to Genesis too?? My life is fullfilled....

  • And Justin Bieber still sucks.

  • Back it was still the full band and it was still the best. My favorite Genesis song of all time.

  • the best music wont ever be known

  • I'm glad these recordings can be introduced to younger genereations such as myself :)

  • 4:20 favorite part

  • Great snare drum sound.

  • MELLOTRON.

  • Genesis ROCKS

  • Jeremy Clarkson sent me

  • This Song and this BAND are obvious examples of Brilliant Music ! Period ! Gabriel Genesis absolutely rules !!

  • The birth of a familiar riff used in alot of prog rock acts in various sub-genres that followed on many decades into the future ?

  • This song is recommend by Jeremy Clarkson. As if you needed another reason.

  • First saw this on (I swear) Midnight Special! My first exposure to the band. I freaked waiting for Gabriel to MOVE after the beloved mellotron opening.

Bought it on 8 track (yes I'm old) and my friend and I played it all the way from TN to CA in our packed Toyota Corolla. Thank you so much for this.

  • @discoverytime1 Along with Musical Box this is my favourite Genesis song. The music scene in the late 60's to early 70's was fantastic.

  • Yeah, your right, but this is Peter Gabriel singing.

  • @drstevenrey we all know that..

  • i just happened to notice the strange coincidences between this album and pink floyds obscured by clouds which was released 4 months earlier. wot's ...uh the deal WOTS (Watcher Of The Skies) and childhood's end. i love both works!

  • The keyboard really makes this song...so awesome :o

  • I still remeber when i heard these first notes - i was sold - forever

  • if an alien civilization will discover us,we only can pray they are very different from us,or they will kill us just like we killed the true american, brazilian and so on..an act of justice,anyway..the universe is a wheel, after all....

  • might be the most beautiful thing genesis ever put out

  • Phil Collins is the greatest drummer ever....apres John Bonham of course......when the drums enter I go berserk.....!!!!!!!A fantastic typical Genesis epic....

  • @TheBitterSweetgr the views though.......tragically few!!!!!!!!!I consider it one of their best....if not THE best

  • this was the first song i heard when i was a baby :)

  • Very underrated song. Genesis should have included this more in their live concert sets in later years. However it was played for Genesis' Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction by Phish.

  • Am I getting old or were these guys really this good?

  • @garbidz Theses guys are geniues !

  • The intro was frigging amazing

  • This is when Genesis was at their best. When it was still the full band and Peter Gabriel sang, not Phil Collins. Everybody likes Phil Collins because that's when you were supposed to like the band. When they had all those stupid big hits and such and mainstream said you were supposed to listen to the band then. Not this because this is music and not the stupid big hits garbage. As far as I'm concerned, this is when they were at their best. Peter Gabriel singing and live was incredible.

  • @writer125 But first few albums with Phill on vox are really great.

  • @Godza1602 Trick of Tail is a really great album, but in my opinion that was the only one with Phil on vocals that really cuts the mustard.

  • the best real rock bands for me were THE WHO, HOT TUNA, BTO, SOME DOORS, IGGY POP AND THE STOOGES,MANASSAS, the BEATLES, the ANIMALS, the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND

  • God bless the Mellotron!

  • @homeruccio91 amen!!!!!!!!!!

  • @homeruccio91 God is a Mellotron

  • Not sure about this new mix for the song, sounds "pushed" or compressed a bit.

  • pink floyd did some great things in their time, undoubtedly. looking back, there is not much of that ultra progressive phase of time that can impress me today, there is a few songs of genesis ( especially from the lamb lies down on broadway), a few of YES and ELP,bits of an obscure german band called POPOL VUH, three or four wakeman tunes and thats about it. not much of a harvest considered the eminent ground breaking importance such music was given in those days ..

  • @buchananstreet alright what do you like?

  • ALL music deserves to exist and flourish throughout the world. Personally, I love it all...for real. But I'm more driven towards the beat-oriented music (electronic dance music in all its many forms as well as UNIQUE hip hop, etc.). Does that mean that my music 'doesn't count'? Of course not. Only the hopelessly aging would say so. Every generation will get stuck in the 'back in my day' syndrome. Fighting that close-minded urge is the key to staying young. :)

  • i remember the first time i ever heard this song. i was on my to oslo for The Roger Waters consert in 2011. omg, i was so happy rest of that month

  • Phil Collins is such an overrated singer, and underrated drummer.

  • @DavidKinner agree, especially when you hear his work with his Jazz Fusion Band, Brand X.

  • @DavidKinner the singer of this song is Peter Gabriel

  • @ARGWalrus10 I know this, this song is an example of how amazing Phil Collins drumming is, and yet he is always praised as a singer.

  • @DavidKinner That's why Peter Gabriel rules all. And why this is the best era of the band.

  • @TheBensolis1 I wish he would have stayed a little longer.

  • @DavidKinner In a way, I'm really happy that he didn't. As good as all of the music was, the dynamic was dying out between Hackett and the other three. Even if Peter stayed on even for a little bit longer, it would have eventually dwindeled into what Genesis is now. He would have left and ultimately delayed his wonderful solo career. The first four PG albums are much more genius.

  • @Djinjiminy For about the third time NO SHIT, Phil Collins is a highly praised singer, which he isn't even that good at, and he puts on one of the most amazing drum performances on this song.

  • @DavidKinner he's a great singer and one of the best drummers. unfortunately not blessed with good songwriting. when some one says to me "peter was better," I say: "Er... you mean as a musician? not really, although Pete did write better lyrics"

  • @DavidKinner i just felt curios about listening to the peter gabriel songs from genesis and the first i see is your comment and now im wondering why people like you who should know better starts insulting one of the best singers of all time simply because you like peter gabriel better in a band they both has been lead singers in

  • @kallemick It's not that I like Peter Gabriel as a singer more, Phil is the better singer, however Phil Collins is regarded as this great singer, but how often do you hear people speak about his amazing drumming skills that you mostly see on the Peter Gabriel Era Genesis albums because they were much more complex.

  • @DavidKinner sure theyre great but i dont think that makes him an overrated singer

  • @kallemick He is a pretty overrated singer, he gets regarded as one of the greatest singers ever, and some people even try to call him top 20 or 30, when there are way over 100 better than him, that can be named pretty easily.

  • @DavidKinner have you tried hearing "you cant hurry love" or the genesis song "jesus he knows me"? i think those songs are good examples at how amazing he can sing

  • @kallemick I've heard pretty much all Genesis songs, but compared to people with amazing voices, especially people from most of the bands from around the same time as Genesis are better.

  • @kallemick big fan of jesus he knows me. They had gems through their entire career except their last album

  • @DavidKinner This simply means you don't personally like him though - so why does that matter?

  • @coppersmiths It doesn't mean i don't personally like him that much, it means as a singer, and a vocalist he is really not that great.....

  • @DavidKinner OK - it's down to personal taste then - not necessarily a measure how great anyone is? I take your point though, of course.

  • @DavidKinner your comment is the stupidest comment i have ever seen first of all just because phil collins sings instead of peter gabriel in genesis dosent mean he cant be good one thing is that you dont like that he takes over after gabriel but its ridiculous to say that hes overrated because of that and besides genesis has only gotten more popular after gabriel left which dosent surprise me i find the peter gabriel work annoying because one moment its music then singing then music again

  • @kallemick How people find to take so much out of a tiny comment, I will never get, he is an overrated singer because he is placed by many people among the greatest singers of all time isn't even close, I've already said this to like 5 people on this video, has nothing to do with him taking over Genesis, his voice is better than Gabriel's, Gabriel's Genesis, was just technically more musically skilled.

  • @DavidKinner i honestly think that he is one of the best singers ever i have tried hearing some of his songs like "against all odds" and "you cant hurry love" (i know that ones a cover) and i find his voice amazing and if people gets insulted by your comment you might as well delete it the reason it insults me is because im a big phil collins fan but i wanted to check out gabriels work aswell and then the first thing i see is your comment which i feel is an insult to fans of phil

  • @kallemick The comment's not offensive, it's the fact that, Phil Collins by people, is regarded as a voice, not so often a drummer, have you really checked out how skilled of a drummer he is?, and I know people that put him together with singers like Plant, Gillan, Daltrey, and all the greatest singers ever that brought stuff to the table, Phil Collins could never accomplish, and if my comment offends people, then maybe people should stop complaining, there are opinions for a reason......

  • @DavidKinner the fact that you say that phil collins IS a overrated singer rather than saying that you THINK he is an overrated singer dosent seem like an opinion to me and besides the reason it gets thumbs up is because other brain dead fans of the old genesis are listening to this mostly the reason i saw your comment was because i decided to give the old genesis a chance

  • @kallemick No it's because he is one of many pop-singers, that's voice gets way more recognition than it deserves. Good songwriter voice, not so much, most great singers easier vocal performances, would be considered better than both the songs you mentioned by him.

  • @DavidKinner have you ever thought about that he maybe just IS that good? it must be if people likes him that much and because of your opinion it dosent exactly mean that hes overrated

  • @kallemick That's the exact excuse that people make for simple singers like Bieber, Timberlake, and many others that get famous based on these cheesy love songs, that barely take anything to sing, and have hardly any talent in them.....Do you think people like them because they are THAT good? and I only bring that up because look at people like the Bee Gees they were an amazing group in the 60's, and 70's they switched their style to be a lot more pop oriented, got tons more famous.

  • @DavidKinner justin bieber has more haters than lovers i know that because "baby" was once (if not still) the most hated video on youtube and i see tons of hate comments on his music thats just seconds old but already has alot of thumbs up anyway phil collins has a really amazing voice i dont think anyone can deny that if they hear some of his songs and i really dont think his overrated and besides youre the only person i ever heard say something like that about him an

  • @kallemick If my comment was really that offensive, do you think it would have 74 thumps up btw?

  • @kallemick and to your comment about his music being annoying because of singing then music then singing, that is what the majority of Progressive, and classic rock is. Genesis although still good in it's own way when it went to continue turned into a pop band afterwards. People tend to make a lot more money when they start writing simpler things.

  • @buchananstreet

You wrote: if you played that song to anyone knowing GENESIS just a bit, and asked them how they find the song, i bet an ox with you theyd laugh and call it TOTAL CRAP.

Well, people who know Genesis "just a bit" will probably find this song crap. On the other hand, people who know Genesis well will probably think that songs like "Illegal Alien", "Who Dunnit" and even "I Can’t Dance" are crap while they will call this one a classic. Which I think it is.

  • Thumps us if u watched this because of TopGear :D

  • @RobinGangzzer95 epic fail

  • A masterpiece of 70's music.

  • rory gallagher tim buckley ten years after savoy brown jerry garcia band jorma kaukonen and hot tuna spirit generation x the holy modal rounders new riders of the purple sage

  • @buchananstreet what about Pink Floyd?

  • @shockwave342,well, if this is your mother´s favourite song, then i am no longer astonished at why she produced such an unpleasant freak as a child: its funny to call ME a satanist when all i exactly do is the precise opposite to that: i wont accept blindness, mediocrity and dumb followers. just because some crap has sold a trillion times doesnt mean it IS GOOD! hitler wasnt GOOD, the pope isnt GOOD, and millions and millions of flies eat shit !!! you can do the same.its a free world.

  • @buchananstreet But does that mean you hate other great british bands like yes, king crimon, ELO, rolling stones, led zepplin, take that, gorillaz, the stranglers, Queen, the Beatles, EVEN PINK FRIGGING FLOYD?

  • @shockwave342 NOPE! but i usually prefer their EARLY stuff, i actually DO HATE queens WE WILL ROCK YOU, thats CRAP! - they were great on their QUEEN II album but no one knows the record, daft followers, they only become followers once its comfortable and fashionable !!!! i knew and appreciated QUEEN when it was almost CRIMINAL and FORBIDDEN to like their records - as in NAZI SPAIN in 1972. they HATED US for liking these faggots then! today any fool can brag with queen ...

  • @buchananstreet what about Bohemian Rhapsody a song by queen i hated, do you also like these Queen songs Flash, Another one bites the dust and don't stop me now? By The Way (or BTW) I am going to The Shambala Festival as Freddie Mercury, The Dead Founder of The British Band Queen. But does that mean you hate other great british bands like yes, king crimon, ELO, rolling stones, led zepplin, take that, gorillaz, the stranglers, the Beatles, EVEN PINK FRIGGING FLOYD?

  • @shockwave342 nope ! but i grew up with a much higher variety of english bands than the kids these days! THE ANIMALS, FRIJID PINK, EAST OF EDEN, CREAM, PRETTY THINGS, ROY HARPER, SLADE, YARDBIRDS, GEORGE HARRISONS ALBUM " ALL THINGS MUST PASS", PENTANGLE, FAIRPORT CONVENTION, SANDY DENNY,JOHN MAYALL ( god bless his name cause with out john thered be no cream, clapton, zeppelin, stones - even mick taylor played in the bluesbreakers not to mention jagger), alexis korner, longjohnbaldry

  • What an epic.

  • Any early Genesis fans in Atlanta, GA out there? I want to have a listening party.

  • ...SIMPLY AWESOME!!!

  • now THATS an intro

  • if YOU lack the brains and senses to understand that not every " classic " or every "legend " or every famous crap is worth the shit they are printed on, then FUCK YOU INTO YOUR OWN SMELLY ASSHOLE YOU CREEP! go rioting in london, DO SOMETHING! instead of licking the arse of celebrities!! justin bieber may be a scum but at least - unlike you - hes a halfway goodlooking scum

  • @buchananstreet I don't Know who you are or where you came or even why you hate this song, THE ONE FRIGGING SONG THAT IS MY MOTHER'S FAVORITE GENESIS SONG besides i know what i like & trick of the tail, but whoever, wherever you are so-called "bucvhananstreet" your father and mother are satan-worshippers and does that mean you hate other great british bands like yes, king crimon, ELO, rolling stones, led zepplin, take that, gorillaz, the stranglers, Queen, the Beatles, EVEN PINK FRIGGING FLOYD?

  • widebody, YOU NAME IT! how IDIOTIC all these highschoolers were, looking back, that they fell for SUCH shit ! if you played that song to anyone knowing GENESIS just a bit, and asked them how they find the song, i bet an ox with you theyd laugh and call it TOTAL CRAP. which is what it is. CAUSE I SAY SO!!!HAHA! LOL!!( WHO ELSE ??!!!) this song sounds so stupid, idiotic, dull and simply shitty , its embarrassing. stop worshipping celebrities JUST CAUSE THEY ARE!

  • @buchananstreet

If you lack the intelligence to discern proper music then fuck of back to your crib and listen to your Justin Bieber downloads you mindless twat

  • So some public schoolboys got themselves a mellotron and plagiarised some poetry?

  • Gabriel was the angel, all you have to do is sit diown and listen to his whole solo collection, a master of video in its first steps in media he laid the foundation for so many artists and is stil a cool guy to this day.

  • I love all the albums (including the first one) up to and including Selling England..have never been able to get into The Lamb and not listened to the stuff after that - I don't know why.

  • i say if you like the real Genesis you should atleast check out Frank Zappa and

    Gentle Giant....!

  • I though it was crazy how Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins vocals sounded a lot alike. I had no idea Peter Gabriel was the one singing on this at first because I just started listening to early 70s Genesis. What an experience though...

  • Man, The Intro To This Song Get's To Me Every Time.

  • 0000 -0-0-0-0-00-000-000

  • the music is better without lyrics...cause if you knew a 'rock' star youd have him or her murdered.

  • no expense was spared in the writing, execution and production of this work. clearly the greatest song ever written. if you don't believe me listen to it again.

  • I've been listening to Marillion all day. However, of all the great tunes of theirs, which songs gets stuck in my head? "Watcher of the Skies".

  • Classic old Genesis.

  • What an amazing rhythm section! A real challenge on the bass and drums here (especially 6:13 to 6:43) One of Genesis' best early works, without a doubt.

  • at first the only song i had heard from genesis was mama.

what the HELL was wrong with me

  • @thisistides97 i love mama but this song with the rest of genesis' early music is perfection

  • @doolb666 i feel the same way after hearing this

  • This intro reminds me the work of Olivier Messiaen. Listen to The Ascension and check this out!

  • Molto bella la canzone ma l'intro è stupenda, forse una delle migliori di sempre!

  • WHO doesn't like this?

This majestic combination of classical music and psychedelic rock makes a delightful piece

  • I love playing this song on synthesizer, wish i had a mello tron though :/

  • jeremy clarkson loves this song.

  • @austrianbmx haha does he? I love this song too. :)

  • incredible musically , wether you understand lyrics or not this is genious...unbeleivable stuff for its time...still relevant today.....Gabriel rocks...

  • incredible musicall,y , wether you understand lyrics or not this is genious...unbeleivable stuff for its time...still relevant today.....Gabriel rocks...

  • Genesis was SOOOOO much better when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer.

  • @themisfightinwords12 Shut up... you have no proper taste in Genesis... I listen to all of it, so I'm a true fan.

  • Great Song

  • Finally decided I would check out Genesis since they were one of the more high profile prog bands.

And you know what, this kicks ass.

  • This song is recommended by Jeremy Clarkson. Nuff said

  • @MrBlackGuy95 was he talking about it in top gear because i know they mention them a bit, and richard doesn't like them...

  • Had this album; still love it!!

  • I'm not proud of the circle

  • I just watched a fox die outside for seven hours

  • one of their best songs, best albums. just marvelous!

  • E' vero che questa canzone fu scritta nella desolazione della citààa campana di Napoli?

I read on Wikipedia this song was written in a desolated area of Naples, in Campania. Is that true?

  • I never heard this before its awesome

  • Well this is a fckn little jewel, I dont know so much about Genesis, but Im a big fan of Iron Maiden, and theres no chance to compare this with any Maiden song or any song from any other band... personally Fear of the Dark is not of my favorites.

  • Still my favorite Genesis tune of all time. And definitely one of their best. So much better with Peter Gabriel on vocals when they were still a full band at the time.

  • That's an amazing tone from the Mellotron. This has to be my favorite Peter Gabriel-era Genesis song.

  • I hope my mother will never see me listening to this music, it would suck to have an orgasm while she can see me.

  • FOld out the inside cover and you'll find see the cover of nursery cryme in the background. just letting people know. great song by the way.

  • peter gabriel sounds fantastic on this song :)

  • Yes concept albums especially of progr.rock (Yes,Genesis, pink floyd,King crims.ect) are for me like classic literature...just immortal.....for ever beautiful...in some respect the highest form of culture we have..i hope you´ll keep right and there´ll be not a world full of Justin Biber,,Britney and Disco-techno fans:-))

    Ciao

  • @dalinaddei I like what you said, everything's right, italian girl. Un saluto. :)

  • @dalinaddei 100% agreed but you missed jethro tull and ELP :)

  • @dalinaddei my 2cents! Rush's Caress of Steel, 2112, A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres!!!

  • @jjcjammer those 4 are incredible... The level of musicianship is set so high.. esp on Hemispheres.

  • @dalinadd , Peter Gabriel deserves particular accolades. He was one of the first artist who combined theatre with on stage music, he was certainly an innovator in that regard. Often overlooked is the Man's evolution beyond as a musical artist. He was a ground breaker in animated music videos. "Sledgehammer, Big Time'" .After which he brought unknown artists that we would never have known, particularly from all regions of Africa, to our attention. He is a shinning gem of humanity. Thanks Peter

  • @martock36 thanks a lot mhogan29 wait till we get our mitts around your neck pal. You know our style; just when you least expect it , we jump out of the shadows and scare the living crap out of you! That's why we have this sound basis for friendship. Later, The You Don't C Us Crew.

  • @dalinaddei If there were actually a few more experimental rappers I wouldn't mind that so much. We need people taking parts of ALL kinds of music to new levels instead of keeping it simple. Porcupine Tree is one of few bands to be in the same vein altogether as these groups. Ever hear Espers?

  • @dalinaddei i think your right, classic literature in the best form, for me its a treasury of classic musical art form.a lot of music today is crap, there is a lot of good stuff out there its just work to find it.

  • Actually Watcher of the Skies is pretty straightfoward lyrically if you've ever read or watched 2001, 2010, or any other works of Arthur C. Clarke. Dosen't make it any less brilliant though.
