@drf1xxx3r im a drummer... and i love gavins playing... i mean really ...damn... but i recognize wilson etc. also as awesome musicians and those guitar riffs etc. do kick ass too so im also watching the others a little bit :D
@nicksword87 i bet portnoy would like this stuff... and harrison probably likes portnoys stuff too... they just like to drum a little different themselves.... portnoy made amazing music when you're in the right mood for it. same with harrison
In a distant future where some space archaeologist digs up the server harddrive with this video on it and broadcasts it across the universe a new world order will rise! All intergalactic disputes will from that day be solved by drumduel and only one true god will be worshipped among the planets: Gavin Harrison!!!
I love those inverted Cymbals that Gavin Harrison uses. He uses them on Blackest Eyes as well, and they sort of stop abruptly, don't ring on and on like conventional cymbals. Any drummer who knows what they are called?
@funkybluecheese77 this is a compressed video. To compress the audio you'll tackle the low and the high ends of the frequency spectrum since they are the least crucial freqs. Hence, for better compression results you should low and high-pass your material so that your compression algotrithm can do a better job on the core freqs. Basically rid your audio of anything under 100Hz and above 18kHz ;)
But to answer your question, compression kills your low end anyway!
@Lacara008 Gavin grew up in a jazz background, his father was a jazz musician,so he played mostly jazz stuff. Before joinning Porcupine Tree he had never played and listened to progressive music.
This was played acoustically at the Royal Albert Hall and for me, was by far the highlight of the night. Absolutely sublime harmonies and the twisted sounding acoustic feel was so intense. Loved it.
@BrixSnBs I've been in two PT concerts, 2008 and 2009. In both of them people stood just as you have said. But if you try to start jumping or whatever, you might miss a chord, and that would be unforgivable.
i saw them at radio city last night, they opened with an acoustic set and they did an acoustic version of this. they said "we tried to think of the most inappropriate song to play for this set" and this was the song,
@henry12350 I was there too. Third Mezzazine, Aisle D, seat 405. I think The Sky Moves Sideways was the best song of the night. and I'm still shocked that they played Small Fish.
i was ground level right past the half way point to the left, it was perfect, but my favorite had to be either the acoustic version of this or open car
It just amazes me how underrated this band is and yet you see so much crap today that I would never call music, or artistic favored by all these kids.
Great band. Great musicians :) One of my all time favorite bands.
What I don't like about the comments here is how people are comparing other musicians to these guys. Seriously can't we all just be mature about things and appreciate the good music thats out there. Every good musician has their own special characteristics. So instead of comparing them to one another appreciate what they have done by offering us great music.
Gavin makes the stuff make sense in the song. I like Portnoy too, but it seems as if he has to force his drumming to sound all technical and proggy, especially in later DT albums.
@thierryman As a 30 year drummer I like the clear remo heads for the toms and the ambassador head for the snare onlyl. Gavin uses the *white* heads for all his drums. And while his drums sound okay.... I do think MP's drums sound a bit more sweeter than GH's.
@usmcsdi69 Gavin is really great, he's a breath of fresh air. But no one match's Peart's fantasy, he doesn't repeat himself very often, Gavins got great foot work, Peart is more complete, but it's all a matter of taste and what style you like, both awesome!
@usmcsdi69 Fair point. Although, as a drummer myself (and i simply adore both Peart and Harrison), i think Gavin is very much in the vein of a young Neil Peart, which can only be a good thing! Both stunning players! I love both Rush and Porcupine Tree! Long may they both continue to astound us... \m/ (:o)
@hatwithfloppers That's seems to be the way people react to PT's music live, and i don't mean that in a bad way.. I saw my first PT concert about a month ago and people were just enjoying themselves in a kind of "Woodstock" way if you follow.. of course during the heavy sections there were the occasional headbanging, but most of the time people were just listening really close aswell as enjoying the visual aspects. I was almost in a trance like state.. The fastest concert i've ever experienced
