"Visions of a rabbit. A freer spirit. One not asked to walk and brush in lines. One whose sexuality is a fact of nature; not a curse to be bundled up and hidden."
Werner's insight into symbolism is amazing. This is so deep.
I need to do a lesson plan on Madeline, but I forgot the book and school. I needed to have the text for one activity I am planning, and why trying to find the text on the internet, I found this. WHICH IS WONDERFUL.
The existential angst of ze Parisien juvenile life is palpable, trembling on ze very ragged edge of terrible madness vomited out of ze savage wilderness from vich ve shy avay, and yet cannot bring ourselves not to look. Yes, ve haf no bananas, ve haf no bananas today. For that as well, I am lost in utter blackness, und vonder what is to be my ultimate fate, alzo I already know. Zus, purple prose and tumid metaphors rule ze day und choke mein bitter heart. Ze Red Death held sway over all.
This is the best one so far. Your curious George was cynical, and Where's Waldo was ambiguous, but there isn't any other way to interpret this book. When I read it as a little boy, I had *exactly* these questions in mind, and no answers. Thank you for shedding some light on this story. Maybe you could do Harold and the Purple Crayon next? although that one's kind of obvious... maybe Horton Hears a Who would fit your style better.
Herzog doesn't pronounce his "w"'s like "v"s. He speaks good enough English to know to say "Winter" and not "Vinter." Otherwise your accent is pretty good.
"Ze smallest girl was Madeline, looking every bit the Napoleon, the little dictator. She is introduced in her underwear, as a nod to French sensibilities."
Nancy Pearl on Picture Books with Steve Scher, 9 am. They closed the show with a clip of your reading of Madeline.. they credited Werner Herzog, though.
It was so funny, I had to see if I could find it for myself!
I hope Werner Herzog uploads a postmodern reading of The Five Chinese Brothers. The indelible images, exposed to me as a child, generated a legacy of nightmares and confusion.
I wonder if the real Werner Herzog has learned of his totemic, self-replicating status.
2:21-2:39, while watching the obvious rabbit that appears on the ceiling, one misses the spectre of a maiden in the mirror. Perhaps this too is Madeline's impending womanhood peering out. Symbolic of all things to come for the girls, and all things Ms. Clavel will never endure.
