  • "Visions of a rabbit. A freer spirit. One not asked to walk and brush in lines. One whose sexuality is a fact of nature; not a curse to be bundled up and hidden."

Werner's insight into symbolism is amazing. This is so deep.

  • I keep coming back to this video. Beyond awesome.

  • I need to do a lesson plan on Madeline, but I forgot the book and school. I needed to have the text for one activity I am planning, and why trying to find the text on the internet, I found this. WHICH IS WONDERFUL.

  • I love this xD

'This is an obvious metaphor for menstruation and sexual maturity!'

  • The dude at the pond is the doctor... and a stalker... perhaps he too searches for valdo

  • I'd like to see a Werner Herzog parody of Goodnight Moon. Why isn't there already one in existence? (No pun intended)

  • Oh, this is pure gold... 1:12 "The tiger dreams only of death." ... 3:19 "an obvious metaphor for menstruation and sexual maturity"

I haven't heard anything funnier for a long long time...

  • This has forever changed my life.

  • But... wheres waldo in all of this?!

  • you dont really sound anything like him though

  • This should be movie. It makes me laugh and feel sad at the same time. I bet the Germans have a word for that.

  • 'In truth, children are next door to sociopaths.' ahaha

  • i love this more PLEASE

  • i love this

  • This just made my life a million times happier.

  • Some deep ass fucking shit right here

  • héy_pãsst_hîèr_nét_rëìñ_åba_îch_biñ_sõ_êiñsam_wîll_jèmand_mìt_mïä_schrêïbéñ

  • Will somebody PLEASE upload a clip of Hezog's appearance on The Simpsons?!

  • God. That rabbit slowly gets whiter and whiter. I expected it to turn its head and look at me.

  • "In truth, children are nextdoor to sociopaths."

  • The existential angst of ze Parisien juvenile life is palpable, trembling on ze very ragged edge of terrible madness vomited out of ze savage wilderness from vich ve shy avay, and yet cannot bring ourselves not to look. Yes, ve haf no bananas, ve haf no bananas today. For that as well, I am lost in utter blackness, und vonder what is to be my ultimate fate, alzo I already know. Zus, purple prose and tumid metaphors rule ze day und choke mein bitter heart. Ze Red Death held sway over all.

  • "In truth, children are next door to sociopaths." *Epic*!

  • What does he say right after "They did not know about the sacrifice Clavel had made of her own life for them"?

  • @inguerbibr

"and why would they, they are just children, and selfish by nature."

  • sublime

  • This is the greatest thing on youtube.com

  • In curious George and Madeline y does he say "mousies" XD

  • So, so good.

  • oh my god!!! :D <3

  • is this really herzog story telling? it turns me on jaja lecker ding german accent

  • jajjaajja LMFAO jaja im laghng but u totally just ruined my childhood

  • This is how a children's book should be read.

  • "This [appendix scar] is an obvious metaphor for menstruation and sexual maturity."

Ironically enough, my appendicitis went unidentified for several days because everyone just assumed I had menstrual cramps.

  • "The tiger dreams only of death." HAHAHAHA!!

  • Madeline was one of my favorite childhood books and your reading was hilarious

  • "In truth, children are next door to sociopaths."

    LOL

  • Ziss iss not Verrnah!

  • This is my favourite thing on YouTube, ever.

  • Love how the trip to the hospital "Seems to go on, forever"

  • Sehr lustig!

  • one of ze funniest ever!

  • This is the best one so far. Your curious George was cynical, and Where's Waldo was ambiguous, but there isn't any other way to interpret this book. When I read it as a little boy, I had *exactly* these questions in mind, and no answers. Thank you for shedding some light on this story. Maybe you could do Harold and the Purple Crayon next? although that one's kind of obvious... maybe Horton Hears a Who would fit your style better.

  • nice

  • effin' brilliant!!

    - Brand new Werner Herzog reading of the famous poem 'If' is located at the above link.

  • Sounds like a cross between Herzog and a nature video, maybe they sell the same themes

  • Herzog doesn't pronounce his "w"'s like "v"s. He speaks good enough English to know to say "Winter" and not "Vinter." Otherwise your accent is pretty good.

  • I love how he ends it with "This has been Madeline. I'm Werner Herzog. Goodnight Princess."

  • "Ze smallest girl was Madeline, looking every bit the Napoleon, the little dictator. She is introduced in her underwear, as a nod to French sensibilities."

  • these videos are fantastic

  • This is seriously amazing

  • Do the Grinch!!!

  • I love you, dude.

  • In truth, children are next door to sociopaths. :)

  • She was not afraid of mousies.

  • please read the giving tree, werner.

  • Underwear...French sensibilities...fantastic!

  • perfect!

  • Holy shit. Awesome. LOL.

  • you sound irish-german

  • P.S. you've GOT to do more. children's books are ripe with material.

  • This was on NPR- KUOW this morning!

Nancy Pearl on Picture Books with Steve Scher, 9 am. They closed the show with a clip of your reading of Madeline.. they credited Werner Herzog, though.

It was so funny, I had to see if I could find it for myself!

  • What's the instrument playing at the very beginning?

  • @flippinrogue sounds like a sitar

  • For all it's humor, this is actually a pretty damn astute literary analysis of Madeline. Great job.

  • this is too epic.

  • What the FUCK.

    This shit is intense.

  • cant stop watching these. and who knew madeline had so much symbolizm

  • "The tiger dreams only of death." Oh my god, this is so awesome. So many awesomely Herzogian quotes.

  • "This is an obvious metaphor for menstruation." I lol at these videos, thanks RyanIverson for putting them together!

  • This is genius! I can't wait for MORE!

  • Who is that man watching them? We shall never know! Hahaha these are to good! XD

  • this entire series is amazing

  • "The Tiger dreams only of death"

  • I could watch this over and over and over...

  • @melicapasso I have watched it over and over...

  • Brilliant!! Well-done!

  • Germans: they have the best children's stories.

Werner Herzog makes the Grimm fairy tales look like Disney.

  • Ze tiger dreams only of death

  • Magnificent

  • dude, you are a genius. i could watch this all day....

  • I hope Werner Herzog uploads a postmodern reading of The Five Chinese Brothers. The indelible images, exposed to me as a child, generated a legacy of nightmares and confusion.

I wonder if the real Werner Herzog has learned of his totemic, self-replicating status.

  • Marvelous! You've done it again!

    More, please.... we're insatiable.

  • hilarious. Very well done

  • ze tiger dreams only of death.

this is brilliant, amazing. you rock.

  • @westlondona That's where I started laughing so hard that I cried, and could hardly hear the rest of the story.

  • 2:21-2:39, while watching the obvious rabbit that appears on the ceiling, one misses the spectre of a maiden in the mirror. Perhaps this too is Madeline's impending womanhood peering out. Symbolic of all things to come for the girls, and all things Ms. Clavel will never endure.

  • Wow. Good eye, DPC. I didn't even notice that!

  • @RyanIverson: Add that!

  • @DreadPirateCrew looked more like a cat to me, but ya i know wat your saying

  • Now that is funny.

  • "She is not afraid of za mousies"

    Classic! I absolutely love it.

    Well done...

  • That was absolutely superb! Great work.

  • lol, I just watched encounters at the end of the world 2 days ago and then this. :D

  • Incredible. A favorite story of mine as a child, now a new favorite in this version.

  • This is the best thing i have seen in a while. Amazing.

  • I could watch this for the rest of my life, and just this.

  • This is brilliant. Thanks for making my day!

  • i used to be scared of this show. wait, it WAS a show right? a movie? ... um

  • It was a children's book.

  • hahha Loved it.
