It's an amazing project, but unfortunately not a viable replacement for international charity of social programs. Humans are more often than not selfish, especially in a capitalist society that epitomizes the 'greed is good' mantra.
Sorry, that's just baloney. No, humans are not by nature selfish. People give hundreds of billions to charity every year in this country, and that's while they're under the burden of huge, abusive government. "Capitialism" doesn't "epitomize" any mantra -- it just means people being free of coersion, allowed to trade freely with each other.
If an individual has the sad philosophy that "greed is good", that's their individual choice. It's certainly not mine.
Fair enough, you take care also. I hope you'll keep your mind open, and look for ways to solve societal problems peacefully.
The idea that money can be separated from central power is a pipe dream. It's never happened in history, and it never will. If you want to empower the little guy you have to decentralize -- distribute power back to individuals and communities.
@ninjabunnyman greed is the world's greatest motivator. I would also say that humans are selfish by nature and have taught themselves altruism. Ever watch two people starve? I have. . . and I've seen how the most giving people resort to default (selfish) as a means of self preservation.
Starvation is not the normal scenario. If people care enough about others to vote for government "charity" they care enough to do it themselves -- and far more effectively.
@antonlee43 Except perhaps for parents and exceptional cases, self-preservation must be the default. It's built into all sentient beings, IMO.
But society is all about working successfully together and we are rarely in extreme survival situations -- except in the mass killings of nature or government.
In normal society there is a lot of generosity and helping kindness of all varieties.
The extreme situation does not invalidate the normal behavior.
But then, if what we have now is "capitalism" than I don't support capitalism either. I endorse freedom, communities, and relationships, in which people choose to help good causes with their own resources -- not using threats to extort resources from their neighbors.
This makes no sense. They just let people decide for themselves how much to pay? That can never work. People are greedy and will never pay. If this business model worked then there wouldn't need to be taxes.
Actually it works quite well. I work at a restaurant called the Wrigley Mansion Club in Phoenix, AZ which does something similar. The restaurant is normally priced for dinner but during lunch hours it's "pay what you think is fair." Business the has skyrocketed and profits have gone way up.
About 98% of customers pay a "fair" price for their meal while roughly 2% pay just under.
What an amazing place. I wish there were more like it

@ninjabunnyman We disagree, and I couldn't be bothered to change your mind, which probably wouldn't happen anyways. Take care. : )

the employees seemed very nice at the restaurant. Nice people make me feel uncomfortable. I don't like it.

Correction: 98% pay ABOVE a "fair" price.
KonkinWasRight 1 year ago
@KonkinWasRight and I am sure a lot of the 2% under payed because they were dissatisfied with their meal for some reason.
