@macthemec Not really. M50 and M52 are great engines, but good luck finding parts. Even an S50 would be easier. With a JZ there are parts anywhere you look. And they will handle more power with stock internals than an M50/M52. Not a pointless swap.
good luck finding parts? then your not looking hard enough, or at all.
I'll give you that its easier to make 10000HP out of a 2JZ than an M5X engine, but for just 400hp he could have thrown in some rods, some ARP hardware and a turbo kit and got the same power without custom engine mounts, exhaust, wiring, shifter, cooling system, driveshaft, etc of the 2jz swap.
@macthemec Well, what if it was a 1.8? Ever thought of that? I can already tell it was a pre -95 car anyway. So it had an M42 or an M50. If it was an M42, that they took out of the car, then I applause them. M42 was just garbage.
actually it is a 318is. really not the car to be going around with 400HP then, the brakes and differential are not suited to that kind of power, and the extra weight of the bigger engine is going to ruin its balance.
@macthemec who gives a crap? its a mid 90s worthless piece of crap now. At this point its going to need a new engine. Having done a little work on BMWs, its probably going to need a new everything. If they put in a nice 1jz, they probably ripped out the pos Getrag transmission and rear end. After you actually work on a BMW, all you wanna do is rip your hair out and throw something in from Japan. Seriously, they are nightmare cars to work on.
clearly all you have done is a little work on BMW's, the only crap is the shit coming out of your mouth.
I'll chose a BMW to work on any day over a Japanese car. but I'll give you that the 80's Japanese cars were easy to work on, back when they actually gave a shit about making a good product.
I love my E36 328i. Only mod is a Signature Motoring performance intake kit. They run around $170 and add up to 9HP in the E46 323/325/328 and up to 9.4HP in the 328i. That's about $17/per extra HP... A good value for the extra oomph. General HP increases are shown:

@macthemec Lol call BS if you want i don't need to prove my job to someone on youtube. Before i went to BMW i briefly worked at honda.. I have friends who are body guys and they'll agree with me. @canadianjob dude first, the LSD in the car is the stock one (probably from an M3) read the spec sheet at 0:21 it says bmw stock differential, and bmw stock suspension. Why a 1jz? I dont understand, the normal engine in the m3 can do that and more. Maybe it was do to the availability of parts for a BMW in japan hmm well in that case it might seem like a good choice in the right circumstance.
Japaneses like curious specs, different set up, unique whole results.
Also, how you said, if you are in Japan and have available a LHD BMW like that ready to being tuned for drift or similar, why not to take advantage of the pieces you already have around you?
1JZ-GTE is common as well as aftermarket parts there, just a bit of skills and time, and it is ready to run.
There are lots of tuned M3s, but not different creatures like this one.
@Boss351Mustang To do a V8 E92 M3 swap in a E36 is totaly pointless plus it would cost a butt load of cash! A stock S50B32 is probably safe bett, but it's expencive and in the end won't come anywhere near 400hp without forced induction. Since superchargers for S50 start at 5k$ you can be sure that for that amount of money you could buy used 1JZ put a GT35R single turbo and remap it to do almost 500hp. Plus base E36 is cheap as hell here, unlike E36 M3s which start at 3x the cost of a base model
@Symbrio What are you talking about i never spoke about a V8... here is my comment. "Why a 1jz? I dont understand, the normal engine in the m3 can do that and more. Maybe it was do to the availability of parts for a BMW in japan hmm well in that case it might seem like a good choice in the right circumstance."
Keep in mind that it's Japan, BMW modification parts are expensive or underdeveloped there, so it's reasonable to work what what they've got since the 1JZ has been tuned to death there. Exact reason why that E92 in the D1GP had a 2JZ in it.
For me e36 with 1JZ is not a good idea. Tuned s50 or s62 id great for this car. However it sounds like BMW even with 1JZ :) And suspension is too soft for drift ;P
I wouldnt say its rare in drifting, but shes right by saying that i suppose because shes in japan but here in ireland we drift e36s, e30s anything thats rwd and has a welded diff really haha
I tried BMW and it sucked. Noisy, little room, rough ride. Last time someone coppied another company was when BMW copied Lexus LS460 in its 7 series. BMW's have no value whatsoever. Lexus IS with all the good options goes for $35k, Acura TSX for about $31k. 328i with the same options costs past $40 and maintaining it will cost 4 times more. U can keep riding your Big Money Waster, I will stick with trusted cars.
@TheGREENLASE Yeah nothing like a bmw.... rules in everything? Absolutely not, reason they arent used for drifting is there are zero parts for them and if there are, they are overpriced up the ass. Rather have a toyota anyday.
BMW especially rules in overrating its own badge and ripping off some losers who don't know shit about cars. BMW's value is pathetically low. I am not even going to go into costs of maintaining the Big Money Waster (hence BMW). Try a Lexus next time.
might seem like an odd question but do all BMW E36 have the big flat pedal as the accelerater? jus i dont like them that much and was wonderin if they all have that style of pedal. if you dont know what im talkin about, pause the video at 0:18 and look at the big accelertaer pedal. do some come with the sames style of pedal throughout?
@RoccoGold Shes not a transexual actually. There is video here on youtube of him driving that car with her in the passengers seat and we get several clear up skirt shots of her.
@RoccoGold but if you put the inlet manifold from the 325i on the 328i its more like 230ps, because it has the inlet from the 320i so does the 323i which is the same as a 325i but with the 320i inlet on it for ecomemy
Funny how they need to swap a 1JZ for 400hp and I am making 400hp on a totally stock 328is engine boosted with 36lb injectors. And then they mention that the diff broke on the way there..... Odd that it can still drive with a broken diff, but no shit it will break if you use a 318 diff, it has a 168mm ring gear. The 6cyl cars all come with a 188mm which is hard to break, but if you have ungodly power then you can always swap to a 210mm.
Firstly, remember "TWIN TURBO" you'd always want that more than a crappy 318is engine I'd say.. the diff didn't break, the LSD did so now the differential is normal which is one tire spinning more than the other and sometimes makes it harder to drift depending on the driver, tires, etc. but Keiichi seemed to drift it good without LSD, LSD is 2 tires spinning at once and it's usually welded, so when it says LSD broke meaning the weld broke and NOT the diff broken, 1jz is mainly good for swaps :)
Turbo, twin-turbo, quadruple-turbo... who cares, boost is boost. And no tuners in Japan rarely weld their differentials. LSD also doesnt mean 3 tires spinning, LSD means Limited-Slip-Differential. I suppose the teeth on the plates in the LSD could have sheered and made it an open diff, or just reduced the limited-slip effect.
@freethinker41 I gotta say I love my 328i to bits. Bought it with a turbo installed and it raises hell. Some of the best german engineering right there.
Yeah, the b28 is great for boosting. They probably thought that swapping in an engine they already are familiar with is easier than starting on a new platform. Asians sure love swapping parts.
Potential is what you make of it. Of course I'm aware of the power potential; its an iron-block I-6 with a good head and tons of aftermarket. I'm a fan of Toyota stuff, just remember there are plenty of BMW's on boost making 400hp all day, I think the current record street BMW small-six is at about 1200hp. Move up to the Big-6 engine and there are cars in Europe with over 1500hp.
I'm not concerned with who can piss further though, I like cars in general and I considered a 2JZ swap 10 years ago before I learned how to build my own stuff.
has that 328 engine still has no turbo or charger? these e36 2.8s are rapid my standerd 1 out drags everything of same hp and more r32 golf all the way standing start to 150mph civic type r / st focus mad aint it sure good showing them owners up wouldnt mind 400bhp though in 1997 4door 328i lol
@brapboys503 I only say that because I'm a "Purist". I prefer a manufacturers motor in its own vehicle. I LOVE the 1JZ, that motor defines all high horsepower engines, but I would rather have a BMW motor in a BMW, nowatimean?
@In4cus Actually, the Keith Black Chevy engines were the earliest definition of REAL power (non-forced induction), if you wanna be a fanboy purist, then fine, whatever.
Dvsconceptz ... i hope you don't mean a ls as in a V8?! how do you fidure a v8 lighter then a straight 6? even if it is aluminum. you still have twice as many components for each bank of cylinders. i'm not saying it wouldn't be tight but i don't think the any LS model engine is lighter then a 1jz
Yes an all aluminum ls2 w t56 weighs 497 filled w fluids...believe me i know I weighed mine several times...
And well lets be real try to walk into the parts store and ask for parts for a 1jz in america>.....Ummmm theres no such thing as a 1jz.....(autozone fail lol).....But yeah I like the 2jz better personally but from a bang 4 the buck perspective lsx all day....
considering where the 1JZ exhaust manifold & LHD steering shaft are located... as well as the foward Sump on both s50/2 & 1&2JZ motors... i've heard it fits right into the E36 front crossmember...
so engine mounts & driveshaft are the only major hardware parts you need...
and forget putting a turbo on a stock BMW motor..
you'd be hard pressed to even make 200hp/L without blowing up
i plan to use my 2JZ instead of a 1JZ inside my 4DR ///M3
wasted a good engine on a grandad car xD

same with the S2K engine swap, a built up NA M42 can also make 200HP, again cheaper and easier.

Thunderwaff 11 months ago

E30 series: 6.0-13.4hp gain
E36 series: 5.5-12hp gain
E46 series: 6.0-13.9hp gain
E92 series: 8.5+ hp gain
Z3/Z4 (all): 5.5-13.9hp gain

I tried BMW and it sucked. Noisy, little room, rough ride. Last time someone coppied another company was when BMW copied Lexus LS460 in its 7 series. BMW's have no value whatsoever. Lexus IS with all the good options goes for $35k, Acura TSX for about $31k. 328i with the same options costs past $40 and maintaining it will cost 4 times more. U can keep riding your Big Money Waster, I will stick with trusted cars.

TheGREENLASE 1 year ago
@TheGREENLASE Yeah nothing like a bmw.... rules in everything? Absolutely not, reason they arent used for drifting is there are zero parts for them and if there are, they are overpriced up the ass. Rather have a toyota anyday.
Unphased409 1 year ago
@TheGREENLASE
BMW especially rules in overrating its own badge and ripping off some losers who don't know shit about cars. BMW's value is pathetically low. I am not even going to go into costs of maintaining the Big Money Waster (hence BMW). Try a Lexus next time.

@tsxws >yeah that's why in every comparison the jap cars hence LEXUS come the last of the pack in terms of quality, driving time-value!

UberWagen 2 years ago
how is it ruined? The car still puts out decent amount of power. You ever think that they swapped in the 1jz because
A) its a unique swap
B) They're more familiar with that type of engine. i.e cheaper to build up
ImportDreams500 2 years ago
is it wow cham in ist initin gold
redalers1 2 years ago
Funny how they need to swap a 1JZ for 400hp and I am making 400hp on a totally stock 328is engine boosted with 36lb injectors. And then they mention that the diff broke on the way there..... Odd that it can still drive with a broken diff, but no shit it will break if you use a 318 diff, it has a 168mm ring gear. The 6cyl cars all come with a 188mm which is hard to break, but if you have ungodly power then you can always swap to a 210mm.
freethinker41 2 years ago
Firstly, remember "TWIN TURBO" you'd always want that more than a crappy 318is engine I'd say.. the diff didn't break, the LSD did so now the differential is normal which is one tire spinning more than the other and sometimes makes it harder to drift depending on the driver, tires, etc. but Keiichi seemed to drift it good without LSD, LSD is 2 tires spinning at once and it's usually welded, so when it says LSD broke meaning the weld broke and NOT the diff broken, 1jz is mainly good for swaps :)
Yamajee200 2 years ago
Turbo, twin-turbo, quadruple-turbo... who cares, boost is boost. And no tuners in Japan rarely weld their differentials. LSD also doesnt mean 3 tires spinning, LSD means Limited-Slip-Differential. I suppose the teeth on the plates in the LSD could have sheered and made it an open diff, or just reduced the limited-slip effect.
freethinker41 2 years ago
@freethinker41 I gotta say I love my 328i to bits. Bought it with a turbo installed and it raises hell. Some of the best german engineering right there.
mixtertrix 2 years ago
@freethinker41
Yeah, the b28 is great for boosting. They probably thought that swapping in an engine they already are familiar with is easier than starting on a new platform. Asians sure love swapping parts.
mars3554 2 years ago
@freethinker41 the 1jz has more potential than 400hp, its only tuned for 400.
HippieHunta 2 years ago
Potential is what you make of it. Of course I'm aware of the power potential; its an iron-block I-6 with a good head and tons of aftermarket. I'm a fan of Toyota stuff, just remember there are plenty of BMW's on boost making 400hp all day, I think the current record street BMW small-six is at about 1200hp. Move up to the Big-6 engine and there are cars in Europe with over 1500hp.
freethinker41 2 years ago
I'm not concerned with who can piss further though, I like cars in general and I considered a 2JZ swap 10 years ago before I learned how to build my own stuff.
freethinker41 2 years ago
has that 328 engine still has no turbo or charger? these e36 2.8s are rapid my standerd 1 out drags everything of same hp and more r32 golf all the way standing start to 150mph civic type r / st focus mad aint it sure good showing them owners up wouldnt mind 400bhp though in 1997 4door 328i lol

this is an IDEAL swap fer a LHD E36
considering where the 1JZ exhaust manifold & LHD steering shaft are located... as well as the foward Sump on both s50/2 & 1&2JZ motors... i've heard it fits right into the E36 front crossmember...
so engine mounts & driveshaft are the only major hardware parts you need...
and forget putting a turbo on a stock BMW motor..
you'd be hard pressed to even make 200hp/L without blowing up
i plan to use my 2JZ instead of a 1JZ inside my 4DR ///M3
