Yeah, you definitely need to perform the maneuver more forcefully. I recently had to do this on one of my classmates and I honestly thought I was going to seriously hurt her. However, she was able to thank me later, which considering the alternative outcome is good.

My comment is that you didn't do the Heimlich forcefully enough. I understand that enough force is required to risk breaking the girl's ribs !
