It's interesting to see how we have developed as a society. In 1894, this man was considered well built and strong. By today's standards though, he would be considered "fit" but by no means a strongman. We are becoming more and more fixated upon body image, men becoming bigger while women are expected to be able to fit into a size 4 or be considered fat in the eyes of the media.
Not only was Sandow very fit, but he was very strong. He was as strong as many of today's strongman competitors. Look for Thomas Inch and Arthur Saxon on youtube too. They were very strong.
See boys and girls, old fashioned lifting and working out before steroids could create an incredible body. Deadlifts, Clean and presses, Snatches, KettleBells, and maybe Squats (if they had squat racks back then) using olympic bars and very heavy weights will build your body just fine. If they did benching, it was while laying on the floor and people handed them the weight (no benches for weightlifting back then). Look up the book Dinosaur Training if you want to know more.
strongman training + years of bodybuilding! brought me up to 200 kilos deadlift 140k bench 170k squat natural! with a bodyweight of 88 kilos (with sporadic help of creatine and constant protein)
Eadweard Muybridge's groundbreaking motion photography was accomplished using multiple cameras and assembling the individual pictures into a motion picture. Muybridge's time-motion photography proved they indeed were, and the idea of motion photography was born.
I meant to add that this was for the Horse Movie. But a true motion picture with one camera was some garden party of people walking around. It lasts an incredible 2 seconds.
oh contraire. The first ever film was footage of a horse galloping in 1877. Though it wasn't really a film it was just a horse galloping... so its not often counted.
Was that the first movie ever made???

Sandow and those strongmens are nothing like the same thing.
jarppa18 2 years ago
Except that Sandow was as strong as most of today's strongmen, at half their size.
