I laughed so hard at the scene where Reporter is flopping around in his MOPP suit with the big floppy overshoes because I've seen that same scene played out so many times in real life. This show and the book (which is also amazing) really have made me consider reenlisting. I spent 9 years in, and then got out. May as well go do the other 11 and retire, right? Now to convince my wife that that's the best idea...
@animemstrmnd Marines started issuing MARPAT in around 2002-2003. Generation Kill takes place at around 2003, thus you will see some officers issued Desert MARPAT, others still with the desert camo.
@animemstrmnd they where being tested around that time. they didn't come out about "a decade" later but about 2 to 5 years later, depending on your unit
Where are all my military brothers?! Remember that basic when you went through the tear gas and had to take off that mask? Fun times lol, I've got CBRNE in Dec, thank God its just a refresher lol
@Agent1W If I ever leave Aviano, which I may not, Kunsan is like my number 3 overseas. I may just get out before then though. Our last MOPP up was like last year around this time.
@yunguns Heh. I was excused from the last two mobexes on Pope NC, the first for barracks groundskeeping details and, remarkably, the second exercise started on the same day my terminal leave did.
I have suited up at least 5 times. Fortunately, I never got "dummy killed". However, the sense of urgency in putting that stuff on did give me a lot of claustrophobic panic(my inherent weakness).
@azndarkfool404 theres no desert suits in inventory? the united states has more then 50x the stockpile of weapons and logistics then any other country
@Xrick56 yeah Marines are known to not be well funded as the army, thats why they are the few and proud and have to do well with what they have, not fancy tech
Ha ha. I laughed so hard the first time I saw this (and the part where Evan is running around in his MOPP suit during that first gas attack). There was so much of this series that applied to the Army too. Not the big ops stuff, but the little menial things. Brought back a lot of memories.
@alonsb2006 Yeah they did. This show follows everything that happened to them, based off of Evan Wright's, "Generation Kill." The reporter that was really there.
This is a great series. Really demonstraights just what these marines had to go through and did they quit? nope. just kept rolling, i love how rudy plays himself too. and yes, the MOPP suites are pricey and the marines are underfunded. Because there funded through the navy they get the short end of the stick, and they cope 100% of the way. as a canadian i totolly respect the endurance marines have.
God MOPP suits dont get me started, at least in Gulf War I weh hd the OD greens instead of Woodland, that is to cover our Woodland Camo BDUs. *rolls eyes*
Great story night of the air campaign start, some douche calls "Gas" over the radio so everyone goes into suit up mode. Our LT jumps in the track with all of our squad already suited up in like 30 seconds starts putting on his and after a minute or two looks around at us and says "Where's my mask?"
because the MARPAT aka "Digital" uniform just came out, and at the time only officers where issued them. It pretty much went from officers to the nco's. Trickle down effect I guess.
You make a good point, but only and espera and colbert have them, and they are not officers. I have wondered about Boxrag's question many times myself, and cannot seem to come up with an answer
It was who ever could buy them first. They got authorized before they started issuing them. If you could get a size that fit you had one, if not you didn't. My father never bothered getting them becaus he was at 28 years when they came out and they had already given him sets of analog deserts. I got issued mine out of boot. I stole his old ones once he retired and wore them until I couldn't anymore to keep my digi's in good shape. I still wear the old ones for "boots and Utes" PT.
because the Marine Corps published a order saying that marines regardless of rank had until I think 2004 to change over to the new digi pattern, the old tri-color desert pattern stayed being issued until 2003 when they just issued the digi pattern cammies
ok, MARPAT is not bein able to be seen in night vision goggles while tha woody camo is. therfore they wore tha pixeld marpat. then tha army followed. and tha air force. the navy is workin on one now.
probably hadn't finished issuing out the rest yet. i know when i joined, about 1/4 of my company was still using the old BDU's. marine's aren't the best funded branch of the military, haha
@leatherneckoif Yeah but CADPAT was the first Digi Pat. But I see what you mean, fucking army can't be original for once. And the Navy? Don't get me fucking started.
back when the war started and footage of these marines were being aired, I thought damn, these are some hardcore fighters! Rollin through Iraq in woodland. lol, I honestly thought it was intentional. I thought it was a psychological manuever. It was such a stark in your face contrast that made me admire these marines.
Don't be such a dumbshit. It's a joke about how military intelligence always screws things up for the average soldier (being assigned jungle camouflage in a desert environment, in this case). Try to think before you type. And even if it was making fun of army guys, there's no reason to be an uptight asshole. No one is beyond criticism.
@TauHecht Ok, you're the dumbshit. Military Intel doesn't deal with camouflage. These aren't soldiers, they're marines. It's woodland Camo, btw. You're the dumbshit, think before YOU type.
@yesiamawizardjonny They are still left over from being ready to fight in Western Europe, hence woodland. Before Desert Storm the DoD didn't have a plan for a multi division scale land battle in a desert environment. Only at the brigade level in case we had to insert troops into the Sinai Desert. That is the reason why there were still using Woodland camo armor and MOPP gear. So the Cav guys had desert stuff in the first gulf war and 1st AD had all green.
@petehjr1 Yeah I know. They military doesn't always have the right camouflage, but these two morons were making fun of and defaming the excellent people who DO work as military intelligence. I just hate liberal assholes who think they can go around trashing on the military and nobody will care. To be honest, I'd probably kick this guy's ass in real life for going around bad-mouthing the brave men and women who had the courage to enlist. All these fucks are only brave enough to go on youtube.
