@SCARFACE40214 The term "break dancing" is the comercialized name for the later 70's - mid 80's movement celebrating African martial arts. This system is based on a form of African kickboxing. In the Americas, African slaves weren't allowed to do martial arts. So, in order for fathers to teach their kids how to fight, they had to disguise it as a tribal dance. Later in history, the Brizilian natives refined it, added a few moves of their own, and produced what is now known as capoeira...
It's just hard for me to believe that a fighting style slaves developed for survival is impractical. Especially when it was so dangerous that it gave coppers trouble in Brazil for years....
it was originally intended to be a dance, Brazilians disguised it as a dance to avoid suspicion in some invasion of their country im pretty sure, not positive though just saying
oh. i really doubt that it's supposed to be a fighting style, imagine capoeira vs boxing for example. though i've also heard something like that, i've heard prisoners in brazil came up with it and they disguised it as a dance because the guards would'nt let them train fighting. i'm gonna look it up
cool, i read on wikipedia that there are different theories about how it came up and that one of the theories is that slaves made it up (or something like that).
yeah it would be cool to be able to pull of these moves.
yeah i think so too. i think it may of been a way of overwhelming your opponet when they werent ready, because if i was just walking down the street and some bresilian started doing flips at me i would not know what to do
Capoeira was used by brasilian natives when they were enslaved by portugal as a form of defense, and was made to look like a dance so when they practiced it looked like dance moves not fight moves,
Yea, this style of it is. But this is not a fight but a flore. I have broken Muay Thai fighters leg with capoeira and have knocked other functional fighting style fighters out with capoeira.
In a real fight situation I'd be pummeled to death. In most cases (or thats what I've seen, but I don't live in Brasil) only our masters can kick that hard to be that dangerous.
Only thing that might be confusing is the absolutely unreadable fighting style. It took me like 3-4 months to understand why is my mestre doing something ... malicia.
Capoeira takes a lot of time for you to be able to use it in real situations.
If you look at the origins of capoeira, it surely is lethal, but not against a world champion muay thai fighter, who would one-shot-knee an elephant to death, but against the invading soldiers, who were watching over the slaves. Lots of moves, and even music (just think about cavalaria) is far more understandable, if you get its history.
It's such a dangerous art because it involves a lot of high, strong, kicks that if actually made to contact a foe, could do some pretty heavy damage. And these guys, walking up to you on their hands? There's a better chance they'd be flying at you. Although I am a MA enthusiast, all I could possibly learn near me is Tae Kwon Do (bores me) so I don't know a whole lot about being in the fight. But even from a few books and videos, u can tell this specific art is a nightmare for opponents.
Try looking at some local universities. I am in the situation you're in but just recently found out a local university has an organization to learn Capoeira. =]
Capoeira is a very highly revered style of Martial Arts. Even Tae Kwon Do, and "Kung Fu" masters will tell you this. The Capoeirista is very unorthadox. Try asking a professional karate master what he thinks of capoeira. I am a first degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and I am telling you now that I could not compete with a good Capoeirista. If the rules weren't so strict in organizations such as the UFC, Capoeiristas would dominate the match any time
Capoeira isn't only a combat style, that's not the point. If you watch the movie, you'll notice that they're having fun, dancing, and not hitting each other...
@7SaintChristopher7 I had a sparring match with my cousin, he trained one year in Capoeira, when we fought he spin and tried to kick me in the head but I catched his foot and he fell...this proved to me how efficient is Capoeira. It's fun to watch but is overestimated.

It's a version of the capoeira song called "paranaue", made for the movie Only the Strong. In the story of the movie it was made by a student as a remix, to make it sound cooler and more more accesible to american teenagers...
mestre bimba fought with many diferent guys of diferent styles(jiu jitsu, kung fu, etc)...the one who standed the most got 1.10 min...so, don´t come to me saying capeoira is not an eficient fight, ok ;)
It seems like capoeira is not a very good martial art for defense. The time needed to master it to an effective level would be extremely long.
Also, in a real fight flipping around on your hands and doing backflips is never a good idea. Most fights end up on the ground, and the fighting style seems to leave alot of opportunities for this to happen. I doubt even an expert capoeira master could have a shot at winning a decent mixed martial arts tournament.
"Capoeira is the witchcraft of slaves willing for freedom. Its beggining has no method. Its end is not predictable even to the wisest master" -mestre Pastinha
thats all i hav to say. i agree wit mestre pastinha
hehe let me tell you this: the advantage a capoeirista has against other fighters, is that most ignorant people think capoeira is soft and non contact, an noone can be harmed with it. a funny thing is, that when we in our training go all the way, you do not want to be hit by a regional armada or meia lua to the head, cause you will then have great risk of breaking your neck. well, actually, any bodypart for that matter. but of course, capoeira is for fun, not for killing each other...
Capoeira is a FIGHT. But it's encouraged to be used just as a Sport/Dance. People do capoeira because of its cultural value, and it's beauty. People don't learn capoeira to really FIGHT. Cause that's not the point. And otherwise, anyone who it's good with capoeira and it's strong can use it on the bad way and really hurt people. And even kill people with one single Movement. Try to receive a "Martelo Cruzado" on your head. You go to the hospital for sure.
Check out Capoeira vs. Muay Thai on the internet, or Tony Jaa vs. Lateef Crowder or something. You want a practical application? Thats what it is. Also, that capoeira was filmed so well cause it was a show. It wasnt even a roda.
If you want to see capoeira applied in a "fight" you could wsatch some of these games- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lysCnz4CxM
But capoeira is a GAME- it is not so easily categorized as other martial arts. You people should really visit a class and not comment on acrobatic filled teaser reels you find on the internet.
Capoeira Angola ( the mother form ) also has contact...just shut up and go to your Jiu Jitsu or Muy Thai classs if your so interested in straight forward fighting.
yes, yes. But i WANT to see the contact. just once. a capoeira fight. or capoeira used effectively in a fight. i'm not knocking it. and i know that it was used by slaves etc. but i don't really care. i just want to see it used to see how it actually works.
you say it's a deadly weapon - all i see - and i say this with respect - is people sliding about on their heads and showing their opponent their ass whilst they are on all fours.
There isn't really respect in your post- because you're obviously basing it ona couple of clips you've seen online.

It works on a very specific physical and psycological level (from what I have observed). Picture yourself being in a fight. Your opponent knows Capoeira. You have never seen Capoeira before or understand it. Your opponent starts moving around like that at super fast speeds. Are you going to easily know how to counter your opponent? It took me three months of observation and a pure fluke to see Capoeira's weakness. That is how I believe this style works.
It's primary weakness is that on some of their attacks (mainly their cartwheel kicks), they leave all of their vitals open for counter. But like I said, not a lot of people can see that during a fight. They would most likely be distracted by the flailing legs of DOOM. And that's just from what I've observed of it. There's probably more neither of us know about.
One more thing, because of the form of the attacks, they require all of the body's muscles. Arm, back, ribs, abs, hips, legs, and even the neck. If you were to take one of those factor's out, chances are they would not be able to attack. For example in "The Protector" (Tony Jaa's fight with Lateef Crowder), during one of Lateef's high kicks, Tony dropped down and kicked out Lateef's arm and Lateef litterally didn't have anything to stand on to connect or even complete his attack.
hey thanx for saying it respectivly unlike other ppl.but i think ur wrong. i take capoeira and man ther r some hard kicks. ppl like u just think capoeira is a dance cuz u only see the fake fights. but ive seen real fites n i noe how its like.
you aren't supposed to see the contact...that was the history of it all, geeeeeeeeeez. wouldn't it be fukkin amazing for you guys to do just a little research on a topic before you start talking out your neck sideways...smh. OH and it's not fighting bright light, it's playing *winx*
actuall ROB...if you knew the history of the game you wouldn't be saying such nonsense. It was indeed used as a deadly weapon but the players were forced to hide that fact cause they didn't wanna be caught formulating ideas to take down slave masters. If you watch capoeira closely, some of the moves used could swipe a 10 ton elephant on his a$$. maybe it's just your ignorance that's stopping you from seeing that *rolleyes*
it's a very lethal martial art. the reason there is no contact in instructional videos or contests is because about 70% of the moves are life threatening blows.
favorited this one and look forward to next veiw. What song is that? I have a bossa nova band called the trees and love copoeira. Will send you a video of our native Cali Band inspired by Brasil! Peace,
CAPOEIRA IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL AND EXPRESSIVE MARTIAL ARTS OF ALL TIME BECAUSE OF ITS HISTORY AND THE BLOOD SWEET AND TEARS IT TOOK TO MAKE THIS POWERHOUSE OF FIGHTING.THE DANCE OF WAR.ANYONE WANT TO SEE A CAPOIERA MASTER LOOK UP LATEEF CROWDER WHO CAN BE FOUND IN THE ZEROGRAVITY STUNT TEAM.
you know what would be cool though? if a capoeira master did something similar to the "gracie challenge" from brazilian jujitsu! the guy would challenge a whole bunch of different martial arts styles and show that capoeira truly is good for fighting. that would be a sight to see!
Groupo Brasil is awesomeee!!!! Thanks for sharing ^^. And capoeira is really more than a fight, it's a dance that is not nonsensical!!! I agree that Eddie in Tekken kinda sucks. The girl who does capoeira in the new Tekken is way better.
"dude, thats alot of muscle memorie into does moves, by "jumping around nonsensically" their put in combat like situations were evade and attack becomes nothin but a simple game. but fo u ill put up a video were they actually hit each other. "-mlima
dude, are there any of these videos where people actually hit each other in capoeira? Or do they just jump about nonsensically forever? Like Eddie in Tekken.
dude, thats alot of muscle memorie into does moves, by "jumping around nonsensically" their put in combat like situations were evade and attack becomes nothin but a simple game. but fo u ill put up a video were they actually hit each other.
capoeira is probably the one martial arts in the world that doesn't focus on beating the crap out of each other. i love how it's treated as a game between two OPPONENTS and NOT two ENEMIES. i hope to death that capoeira lives on for years to come, because it's probably the one with the most HEART. nice vid!

what is the name of the song?
BAndido56 5 years ago
i guess the name of this song is PARANAOUE... ITS JUST A GUESS!
BADNCKT 5 years ago
It's a version of the capoeira song called "paranaue", made for the movie Only the Strong. In the story of the movie it was made by a student as a remix, to make it sound cooler and more more accesible to american teenagers...

mestre bimba fought with many diferent guys of diferent styles(jiu jitsu, kung fu, etc)...the one who standed the most got 1.10 min...so, don´t come to me saying capeoira is not an eficient fight, ok ;)
albertodir 5 years ago
It seems like capoeira is not a very good martial art for defense. The time needed to master it to an effective level would be extremely long.
Also, in a real fight flipping around on your hands and doing backflips is never a good idea. Most fights end up on the ground, and the fighting style seems to leave alot of opportunities for this to happen. I doubt even an expert capoeira master could have a shot at winning a decent mixed martial arts tournament.

Axé, Camarão.
CamaraoCapoeira 5 years ago
hehe let me tell you this: the advantage a capoeirista has against other fighters, is that most ignorant people think capoeira is soft and non contact, an noone can be harmed with it. a funny thing is, that when we in our training go all the way, you do not want to be hit by a regional armada or meia lua to the head, cause you will then have great risk of breaking your neck. well, actually, any bodypart for that matter. but of course, capoeira is for fun, not for killing each other...

breakdance fighting without the fighting
camellightscab 5 years ago
Capoeira is a FIGHT. But it's encouraged to be used just as a Sport/Dance. People do capoeira because of its cultural value, and it's beauty. People don't learn capoeira to really FIGHT. Cause that's not the point. And otherwise, anyone who it's good with capoeira and it's strong can use it on the bad way and really hurt people. And even kill people with one single Movement. Try to receive a "Martelo Cruzado" on your head. You go to the hospital for sure.
marcelosouza 5 years ago
Cool vid, but you should change the description. There were no "fights" involved.

Check out Capoeira vs. Muay Thai on the internet, or Tony Jaa vs. Lateef Crowder or something. You want a practical application? Thats what it is. Also, that capoeira was filmed so well cause it was a show. It wasnt even a roda.
Farkwun 5 years ago
If you want to see capoeira applied in a "fight" you could wsatch some of these games- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lysCnz4CxM
But capoeira is a GAME- it is not so easily categorized as other martial arts. You people should really visit a class and not comment on acrobatic filled teaser reels you find on the internet.
Capoeira Angola ( the mother form ) also has contact...just shut up and go to your Jiu Jitsu or Muy Thai classs if your so interested in straight forward fighting.
JaredWilliams 5 years ago
yes, yes. But i WANT to see the contact. just once. a capoeira fight. or capoeira used effectively in a fight. i'm not knocking it. and i know that it was used by slaves etc. but i don't really care. i just want to see it used to see how it actually works.
you say it's a deadly weapon - all i see - and i say this with respect - is people sliding about on their heads and showing their opponent their ass whilst they are on all fours.
smallinson 5 years ago
There isn't really respect in your post- because you're obviously basing it ona couple of clips you've seen online. If you want to see capoeira applied in a "fight" you could wsatch some of these games- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lysCnz4CxM

That is how I believe this style works.
uuumdm 5 years ago
cool. what's its weakness then?
smallinson 5 years ago
It's primary weakness is that on some of their attacks (mainly their cartwheel kicks), they leave all of their vitals open for counter. But like I said, not a lot of people can see that during a fight. They would most likely be distracted by the flailing legs of DOOM. And that's just from what I've observed of it. There's probably more neither of us know about.
uuumdm 5 years ago
One more thing, because of the form of the attacks, they require all of the body's muscles. Arm, back, ribs, abs, hips, legs, and even the neck. If you were to take one of those factor's out, chances are they would not be able to attack. For example in "The Protector" (Tony Jaa's fight with Lateef Crowder), during one of Lateef's high kicks, Tony dropped down and kicked out Lateef's arm and Lateef litterally didn't have anything to stand on to connect or even complete his attack.
uuumdm 5 years ago
hey thanx for saying it respectivly unlike other ppl.but i think ur wrong. i take capoeira and man ther r some hard kicks. ppl like u just think capoeira is a dance cuz u only see the fake fights. but ive seen real fites n i noe how its like.
axepicole 5 years ago
as amazingly athlectic as it is i have yet to see any contact in any capoeira 'fight'. it's just breakdancing with different music
smallinson 5 years ago
you aren't supposed to see the contact...that was the history of it all, geeeeeeeeeez. wouldn't it be fukkin amazing for you guys to do just a little research on a topic before you start talking out your neck sideways...smh. OH and it's not fighting bright light, it's playing *winx*
HighaLevel 5 years ago
Capoeira is not for contact. Because it's dangerous. It's like to want to see contact with a Sword fight. It's deadly.

wow..it looks awesome but is it really any use for fighting? its just gymnastics for boys isnt it? how can it be classed as a martial art?
robz69 5 years ago
um... what you see here is capoeira for rodas. capoeira fighting is nothing like this. there are holds, grapples, none of the floreios or cool stuff.
Farkwun 5 years ago
actuall ROB...if you knew the history of the game you wouldn't be saying such nonsense.
HighaLevel 5 years ago
it's a very lethal martial art. the reason there is no contact in instructional videos or contests is because about 70% of the moves are life threatening blows.

you know what would be cool though? if a capoeira master did something similar to the "gracie challenge" from brazilian jujitsu! the guy would challenge a whole bunch of different martial arts styles and show that capoeira truly is good for fighting. that would be a sight to see!

capoeira is probably the one martial arts in the world that doesn't focus on beating the crap out of each other. i love how it's treated as a game between two OPPONENTS and NOT two ENEMIES. i hope to death that capoeira lives on for years to come, because it's probably the one with the most HEART. nice vid!
