This cover is awful. David McWilliams charted #2 in France in 1967 and... nowhere in UK. It was one of my favourite songs of my teenage years. Marc Almond slaughtered it :-(
David McWilliams of course deserves the credit for writing the music but this version by Marc Almond is for me the classic, the backing is more sophisticated and I love the extra verse he adds at the end.
This and the original by McWilliams are the same tune, but compleatly differnt. they both have there qualities in differnt reasons. That is why they shall BOTH remain classics.
Who gives a fuck who was born within a hundred yards or a hundred bloody miles of Belfast City Hall. Just enjoy the music and lay your sectarian shite at the door before your enter the house!
David McWilliams was from Belfast N.I., he moved to Ballymena at the age of 3. The strage sound is a leslie speaker the same type of speaker that was used on The Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows track. Marc Almonds version is very good I can't remember what Davids view was at the time of this version does anyone remember?
I absolutely love this song and wish you could download it. Had it on my Now22 Tape back in 1992 and it brings me back to times when I use to go to the coast every weekend down to the caravan to see friends - happy times. Then you grow up and life doesn't half get tougher. Just hearing this has brought me back to my youth and good times - I shouldn't live in the past I suppose.
@dunning1977 Yea, live in the past, its a good place. I used too listen to this while travelling on the bus from Glasgow to Dundee to see friends that I dont know now. Sometimes, I used to have no cash for the bus and would hitch. I had my music to keep me going when I couldnt get a lift or I got a lift from the freaks on the road. No I-pod, just a bag full of half used batteries to keep the personal stereo going. I would reach glasgow and want to share my music.
The first time I heard the original by David McWilliams on the radio(cant remember the station) the DJ said that the Chorus had been omitted, McWilliams actually sang it in to the recording studio cross atlantic, on an landline back in those days, they kept it in after mixing, because David liked the effect.
Know some of Marcs past freinds from Southport, thank god he got away and realised his true potential, despite setbacks that would have finished many of us. This version of the great David McWilliams, "Days of Pearly Spencer" is excellent by Marc, arrangement is second to none!
I disagree, Mr Packrat. This version is a fine tribute to David McWilliams' original. Almond added an extra verse that leaves the listener with some hope, whereas the original was just a particularly sad song about a personal friend of the writer. Mc Williams surely wouldn't have objected.
foto2011 - I'm sure David McWilliams wouldn't have objected, but I can't agree that the song is better with a big intro, or that its better with hope.
Sadness is necessary, and music is a good way to express it.
well, i like the original from the 60's with it's calm drama, but this version suits my taste better. it's more driving, got a cool dance vibe, and it just explodes with emotion! & I love marc's voice so much!
1967 David McWilliams based the song on a homeless friend, native to his home of Belfast Ireland. Marc almond covered the song in 1992 and added the last verse. The original had a weird but interesting almost "voice through a telephone" like sound to the chorus.
I think they actually tried to recreate the telephonic voice effect on the chorus on Marc Almond's version here too but it's so subtle that it's barely noticable.
On the original David McWilliams version it is quite striking.
I am so glad to say that when I discovered him back in 1990, I had no idea he was the lead singer of Soft Cell. So his solo career to me came before Soft Cell. And I prefer it that way.
Ernesto de Lorenzo, Feliciano, Entre Ríos, Argentina: Never I´ll be tired of listening this song. Unforgetable for the times of times. Thank you for to posting this video.
I personally think that the song has to do with trying to survive while being a part of the working class, living in the poorer, industrial area of the city. But that's merely my opinion so I may be talking BS here ;P
This cover is awful. David McWilliams charted #2 in France in 1967 and... nowhere in UK. It was one of my favourite songs of my teenage years. Marc Almond slaughtered it :-(
