I don't understand the hype around this band - I mean I wouldn't say their shit but they 're a poor man's Pulp. I mean this is suppose to be their best song - it just doesn't do it for me - the way it jerks awkwardly into the chorus and she does her Jarvis monologue/talking bit.

Why do you have to compare everything to something prior? For one thing it's a female voice and despite Jarvis Cocker's bravado he can't really sing. Kate Jackson though peaks for most of her songs but they're not really that similar.

I disagree Jarvis has a versatile voice a decent range Kate Jackson doesn't have much range that's a fact. It's the image/style of Pulp they've plagarised go and listen to Different Class. To be honest even Kate Jackson admits being heavily influenced by Pulp.

Okay I do actually own different class and I've listened to it many times. I like it but I know Jarvis can't really sing. His appeal is his attitude and his Lyrics. She might have some pulp influence but she's singing mostly from a female perspective.

Jarvis does alot of talking bits but ask anyone who knows about music he has a good range he can hit high notes and go quite low too - He's a good singer and distinctive. He's also very good with melodies that's partly why pulp had a massive appeal. Kate Jackson doesn't have a bad voice but she's limited she's got quite a deep voice - period. Also alot of the songs by Long Blondes are kitchen sink dramas along the same lines as Pulp - there are similarities even if it from a female pespective.

I do know how to technically sing, I've been trained. Jarvis Cocker doesn't appear to have a lot of training at all. He's much like Jim Morrison in that regard. I know what Kate Jacksons vocal range is. I said Kate Jackson peaks for most of the songs she sings in my first post. I'm a fan of both bands but I don't need to listen to armchair musicians talk about vocal ranges when they don't know what they're talking about.

No need to get rude - you know nothing about me. But get real Weekend without My Make Up it's enough to make you puke as a title. Or that track You Don't Need a Boyfriend is really preachy like your Mum's giving you a lecture. By the way I think some of the untrained voices are the best the most distinctive of all because their raw they haven't been moulded into something that some else thinks you should sound like.

I agree but that doesn't mean they can sing. The defining feature and most of the talent in this band is the guitarist, it's very 60's brit pop. He had a stroke and now the band had broken up anyway.

I'm very sorry to hear that about the guitarist. I never said Kate couldn't sing she has a rich voice I just said it was a fairly deep voice without much top - no big deal Debbie Harry never had a great range. Actually I did a gig with this band in 2004 when they were starting out - the guitarist was the best musician he was the lynch pin in many ways - I'm not a fan as you can tell but at least they tried to be different and in that respect your right they weren't like Pulp.

Yes you 're right Jarvis isn't technically a good singer - he's undisciplined - but he's raw and unique in a good way for me and I like the Sheffield accent that creeps in.

he's lefthanded. He doesn't play his strings "the other way" as you so nicely put it. He uses a righthanded guitar though, a lot of left handed guitarists do/used to play that way (see Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, etc). Lefthanded guitarists are a bit overlooked, I, myself just chose to learn how to play righthanded :)
