  • Nice video man I don't own the 22 yet but I have the 9mm since walther made the 22 it is made just like the walther p22 the barrel is almost identically built that is Barrel cover on the end and that wrench is to take it off and remove it but i believe the barrel they said is fixed the p22 was not fixed and you could get the actually barrel out of the gun and clean it if you do take it off it screws right back in but don't loose that wrench walther p22 mags should work with M&P 22 the look ide

  • @shotsfired100 : Yes the end removes to allow removal of the barrel. See my "Part 3" Video I explain all this.

FYI, the Walther P22 magazines will NOT fit this gun, I tried. Absolutely not even close.

  • Great review! Mine is coming in tomorrow, and will be a nice compliment to my M&P 15-22. For ammo CCI seems to run pretty flawless in the 15-22 where Federal bulk is ok when the gun is freshly cleaned but after a few hundred rounds at the range starts to have problems fully cycling. Seems every gun has a sweet spot for ammo - curious if the sub-sonic CCI will cycle the slide in the pistol (works like a champ in the 15-22).

  • what if you shoot the 36 grain federal first?

  • I just got this gun and bought the white box 555 and every other shot was a jam. I was going to send it back but my local dealer stated I should be using .40 grain not the .36 grain. comments?

  • @tritan1 I don't like the Winchester .22's.

When the gun is new, try running CCI Mini-mags, either the 36 grain HP's or the 40-grain round-nose. The CCI MiniMags have enough "kick" to make the gun cycle properly. After it is worn-in a little bit, and loosened-up, then you can try bulk-pack ammo.

... If the gun won't cycle properly with CCI Mini-Mags, then I would send the gun back. Mini-mags are the best ammo I can think of, and if it doesn't run with Mini Mags it just won't run, ever.

  • @ResponsibleCitizen64 bought the cci today going to give it a try tomorrow. I also cleaned the gun last night and found lots of oil for purchase.

  • @tritan1 I have never shot a MP22 but I have a P22. The only ammo that functions the gun flawlessly is Remington Golden Bullet. The rounds are dusted with gold powder, but you can clean that off by dumping the rounds in a Tshirt and run them around with your fingers.

  • @fwbrc51 "Remington Golden Bullet" I was using this all the time, but switched to Federal because I had alot of duds with the Remington Golden Bullet. They are lead bullets that are "copper-washed", if I understand correctly.

  • @tritan1 When I got my gun home, it was extremely dirty. I probably spent close to 2 hours cleaning it. However, I tried my 60gr SSS (for my 1:9" rifle) rounds through this thing first off as a function test and it performed flawlessly. To this day, I've never had a single issue with it, no FTE and no FTF's. I don't think the bullet weight in a barrel this short with a soft spring, will make much difference. Just clean the crap out of it and oil the necessities, 22s don't like a lot of oil.

  • You mention the 9 and 40, how about the 45?

  • @ManFromMassachusetts "You mention the 9 and 40, how about the 45?"

I _think_, but I am not sure, that the 45 fits in slightly different holsters (frame is slightly wider?) but other people say the guns are similar-enough across the entire family that they can fit in most holsters across the entire range of 9mm-40-45. Otherwise, the 45 has the same controlls, fit, & function as the others, so yes I should have included the 45. I only have the 9mm to compare it against.

  • The wrench is to remove the barrel threading cover for a suppressor

  • Good review - will look closer at one. Want a handgun that my daughter can shoot with me. On ammo...I picked up a Mossberg Tactical .22 and tried a couple of different ammo options. Some of the standard power .22 ammo would FTE (not often, but maybe 1 out of 100 rounds). Picked up some Federal bulk box that was 40 grain and have had no troubles at all. The higher power ammo just seems to cycle better.

  • Great video series (3 parts). The only thing I might add is you seem to emphasize that this gun isn't for home/self defense. Is it the BEST choice? No. But I do keep mine loaded with CCI Velocitor hollow points. I wouldn't hesitate to use it if I couldn't get to one of our three 9mm pistols, .357, Saiga 12, or M&P 15 (.223). We also keep an M&P 15-22 loaded up with the same ammo for the same reason.

  • thanks for the info on this gun. Might be my next buy

  • how is the recoil on the m&p 9 vs m&p .22? Looking to purchase my first firearm

  • @mattdmv The same difference between any .22LR pistol VS 9mm pistol.

Go to you local gun store and handle the firearms you're interested in. Better yet, shoot them prior to purchasing (through friends, or a public range that provides rentals).

  • I was looking for a good target and self defense weapon .22 caliber type of gun, the gun stores around here are a dying breed and are going the way of the dinosaur and not one knows what they are talking about and was advised not to buy the S&W and ended up with a ruger government issue bull barrled .22 that is the most acutrate gun that I have ever found. But I still like opttions, I say to people I do not care if you have an ak47 I cab out shoot anyone with an acurate .22,. YOU ROCK.

  • the thing on the end of the barrel is just a thread protector. so you can replace it with a thread adapter to run a suppressor or whatever else just like the gsg 1911 and the walther p22

  • does the slide lock back after the last shot?

  • @iloveNgany "Does the slide lock back after last shot?"

Yes the slide locks-back after the last shot.

Sometimes it doesn't catch the slide-lock if you have a very dirty gun, or weak ammo.

But it is supposed to lock-back on empty, just like the M&P 9mm/40-cal

  • I just picked one of these up and my first 200 rounds of federal had numerous failures to feed / eject. I examined the stuck rounds, the nose of the bullet looked like it was catching on the barrel's bevel point where it feeds into the chamber. I only shot 5 mags worth of CCI but had no failures with those.

  • @crapola71 "my first 200 rounds of federal had numerous failures to feed / eject."

I just opened-up another box of Federal Bulk Pack .22's and had numerous problems. It seems there can be a large variation from one box to the next. Most boxes are fine, just had one box where they are weak (not ejecting or stove-pipe jams). After burning-through that one box and switching to a new box of ammo it is fine now. So, in my case I think It was just one bad batch.

  • I just got a Colt 1911-22 and I think you will find that the wrench is for a threaded barrel you can take off the end piece and put on a supressor if you want

  • man i just had to mention "kudos" on your use of a peanut butter jar for storing ammo!!! i do the same with except im using it for my bulk federal .22. i loves me some peanut butter and im always using my empty jars for ammo carriers!

  • @thekerrypetes "use of a peanut butter jar for storing ammo"

FYI, the 18-oz Peanut Butter jar holds approx 150-rounds of 9mm.

  • Thanks for the vid.

  • I've had nothing but good results with Federal .22s (525 round value box). I've shot thousands of rounds and have had only a half dozen or so failure to fires. Not too bad.

  • I've been getting some messages from people that are totally missing the point here: This is NOT a sidearm you would use for Duty use or as a Carry-gun. It is a .22 !!! It replicates the same look, feel, function of the M&P 9mm / 40-cal pistol, but uses cheaper .22LR ammunition.

  • That is one sweet looking gun, I got to get one.

  • The tip removes to give you a threaded barrel. You can then use a suppressor if you have one.

  • Update#2:

-There is a problem that can occur if you slam the magazine in quickly: the top round will tip-up (sticking up vertically) then prevent the gun from feeding the first shot. The solution to this is to be gentle when inserting the magazine to not flip-up the first round.

-A friend of mine at the range also got a M&P22, he shot several different boxes of 22 ammo with no problems.

-I plan on making a "Part 3" video after I pass 1K or 2K rounds fired, to give an update.

  • @ResponsibleCitizen64

    Looking forward to Part 3.

  • @mag318 I've past 1,000 rounds with this gun now, so I can do a follow-up video. What would you like to see in Part 3?

  • @ResponsibleCitizen64

I'd like to see closeups of the pistol being fired from different angles.

  • @mag318 "I'd like to see closeups of the pistol being fired from different angles."

You got it.... Part 3 video is available now. Thanks for watching!

  • Update on this pistol:

    - I've now shot around 700 rounds through it. Once, I shot it enough to make the barrel and slide hot! No problems, it kept working fine. so far so good.

    - The front barrel bushing disassembles the same way as a Walther P22 and has the same threads. Thanks to one of my friends who has a Walther p22 we were able to confirm this.

    - The Walther P22 Magazines will NOT fit in the M&P22, not even close.

  • thanks. i am thinking of going to the range this weekend and test fire a couple of .22 i want

  • Thanks for the review man, just posted a comment on your intro review to this video and did not see this one till after. Very helpful info to pass on to my mother in law who has a Walther p22. It is constantly stove piping and has feed issues on Winchester ammo. I don't shoot much .22 to help her out with that cal so this helps a bit. I gotta say I love the M&P series though. My .40 has been my second wife with NO issues whatsoever. Thanks again for the reviews

  • i am thinking about getting the s&w M&p22 or the walther p22. the price does not matter. which would u suggest.

  • @treehawk1996 "i am thinking about getting the s&w M&p22 or the walther p22"

It depends on which style you like. Make sure you go to a good gun store that has a firing range, where you can test-fire both. You need to get a feel for it to see which one you like before you buy.

  • Great video to this much anticipated Smith & Wesson. I for one appreciate the time and effort that went into this video which is extremely well done.

  • Nice videos on an eagerly anticipated pistol. This is the first really good video on the M&P22 so keep up the good work. Many of us appreciate the time and effort you put into this.

  • Definitely curious as to what the wrench does for the barrel. Also, is the action anything like its centerfire brother with the same type of sear/striker setup?

  • @jonf1 "is the action anything like its centerfire brother with the same type of sear/striker setup"

Please watch my "Part 1" video with the bench-top review, I explain alot more about the internals of the pistol in that video, its in there.

  • The wrench is to take the cap off the end of the barrel. same as the P22. it allows an adapter to be added to use with a suppressor. if you take off the cap it also allows the barrel and ramp to come off the gun for easier cleaning.
