When my nephews were young I used to take them onto mountains and I always remember the youngest asking, continually, ''is that the top''?
One clear summers day when he was walking by my side he asked the question. Much to his delight I told him to run on and find out. He got to the brow and stood there for a while with his hands on his hips and his neck craned to look up. He then turned and shouted to me, uncle Huw, there's another top!''
do they need like a 180% lung capacity to do it without oxygen bottles or is it just a matter of hyperventilating fast enough that you would pass out in normal conditions
@Huzzawful You should read Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. You get a lot of details about mountain climbing and it's a good book. Basically, you have to spend a few weeks at high altitude so that your body adapts to the lower oxygen. But above the death zone (like 26,000 feet or so) it doesn't matter anymore. You can only live there for 24-48 no matter what kind of shape you're in.
@somnus71 - Humans can't live there but the tiny Himalayan jumping spider does. It's been found as high up as 22,000 ft. and it's only source of food are stray insects that are blown up the mountainside by the wind.
Whats the point in risking your life to climb a mountain. Is this how the super wealthy try and give themselves some adversity to try and balance a bit of karma. Or is it what middle aged men do when they realise they are becoming old. I would endeavour to climb a mountain just so I can figure out Why people do it. As it stands now my opinion is that their fucking nuts.
@MrMrBilko to understand fully, you must do this yourself. Theres no secret agendas or status gains from climbing. We do it just for the pure fact that its there and we love adventure, not to get "one up" on someone.
@MrMrBilko No reason. It's not just millionaires. There are guys who work two jobs just so they can climb mountains like Everest once every two years or so.
south summit, your at 28,700ft your only 300ft away from the true summit. but your stil a couple hours away.... what the hell it looks like 100 m away from where their standing O_O their probs like FML-_-
Wow. At 0:19 you can see the clouds and it really just shows how truly high you are. I'm scared of heights also lol so putting myself in that position is crazy!
is this a part of a longer documentary, if so what´s its name... ? anyway, great quality in image and sound, i think this one of the best clips on the tube i have seen... great job!
Can't believe this kind of real stuff gets so much less views than things like lady gaga! Does that tell something about the direction where the world is heading? To the summit and never back.
super sharp footage. Do you have additional clips? I hope to be on the mountain in 2012. Unfortunately 2011 plans were changed and i will be climbing Denali instead.
incredible.
