i have a question. I want to buy a wire cage for my 2 ratties (one of which is pregnant) for more room and because i currently have an aquarium for them and i dont like it. where did you buy your cage? and how much was it? :)
an aquarium is never good for a rat unless you clean it our everyday at the least. for a preggo rat or a rat with small babies a plastic bin with alot of small holes in it is best. its cheaper, babies cant squeaze through the bars, and it has planty of ventelation assuming you put in enough air holes on the sides
when i first got my boys i tried cleaning out their cage everyday because i was used to the poo free enclosures of my reptiles but it just got to be too much work to do it everyday. i clean out their cage once a week now and i have a much bigger cage so it stays cleaner longer
I switch between wire cages and aqurium for my mice but usually if you get the wire ones with the tubes to seperate you can get a big on and a few small ones to connect and you'll have plenty of room.
haha this happened when my hairless rat mama had a litter of 10. 6 survived and they never let her have a minutes peace. She was very trusting of me because I had her since she was a baby and she loved when i took the babies out and gave her a break.
Thanks for replying and she was an awesome mom and it was so funny those babies never gave her a minutes piece and I stuffed them all good with tons of food. lol No wonder they were little butterballs.
Actually mom has a hammock and there is also another bed on the other side and I find the Aspen chips best for little babies. I have many size cages and they keep moving up till they are in Ferret Nation cages. :-D
Oh my rats have run in wheels since they first open their eyes. I have had rats and wheels for over 20 years and no problems.
I believe a good 11 inch large wheel helps keep them in shape and happy too. I am sure mine have well tested them now for years. Never have problems here.
My longest lived rat and smartest ran all night. She never went nuts and she was in good shape and I believe the reason she lived so long was because she ran.
I'm sorry I sounded rude. Unfortunately, some people get wheels for their rats to run in, and they are often way too small, which hurt their spines when they run in a unnatural position. And if a rat doesn't get as much stimulation as it needs, they can get "addicted" to run in the wheel, which isn't good for their mental health (there are intenet pages explaining this more throughly). I haven't found such big wheels anywhere so I got a bit suspicious. Sorry! Glad your rats are fine.
Not rude! Do get the biggest and best wheel you can. Very good mentally and physically.
I have huge Ferret Nation cages and more than one wheel. I have had rats for 27 years and I hang them a couple of inches off the floor. Some run side by side and do wheelies. Some of my lazy boys will run. I had a mom in labour who ran, and got down and delivered all her babies. The wheel helped her in labour. She ran after to get back in shape.
Oh that is so true and my babies start running as soon as they open their eyes. It is so cute when they do wheelies and catch on so fast. Even litle babies can make a large 11 inch wheel work. I love the hanging metal mesh ones best of all.
Thank you and I laughed so hard at my babies nursing through the bars. Poor momma couldn't escape for even a minute of peace. She was such an awesome dedicated momma too.
Thank you and I love this video and how the babies could think of nursing through the bars. Then one little one forces it's way into her arms. I'm so glad I captured this one.
Thank you and do you think thois is okay? appreciate your comment on the title. Some may not want to look with the old title. I didn't think of that. :-D
ow if you started reading this dont stop its really scary!ok send this to five other videos in 143 minutes. when you are done press F6 and your crushes name will appear on the screen in big letters this is weird because it does work. If you break this chance you wont have a crush in the next five years
omigod!! dats da cutest thing ever!! i have a female and a male rats too and dey had 5 babies but the weird thing is instead the mom waz supposed to care for it but she ate them!!!! i waz soo gross out i gave them away!! and the babies died!! how sad!! i waz soo excited about baby rats but it turn out sooo bad!!
That is very sad but she maybe wasn't getting enough to provide milk for her babies or something was really wrong or she would not do that. She was only trying to keep her cage clean and she did not know any other way to do so in captivity. Sorry it went bad for you.
It was so unexpected to see something like this happen and I am so happy I caught it so I could share it with you all. I will never forget that moment myself. :-D

Oh oh oh. A good cage for rats is around $100 from the pet barn, no idea where you live.
For a pregnant rat, an aquarium is pretty good. No shelves and wires for the babies to hurt themselves on.

Well clearly it has to be cleaned everyday. I do that anyway with a wire cage.

Don't worry that is a table cage and they move up to Martins then Ferret Nation cages.
Have them for boys and girls with lots of wheel and toys.

Hehe, sneaky kids ^^ Really lovley!
The wheel tho... it hurts their spines running in it, and they can get mental problems by running too much... look it up!

lilratscal, yes that title is nicer. Mama rat sure does look tuckered out! How old are the babies? The youngest rat I've cared for was 11 wks.

I think maybe two weeks old as it has been awhile now.
I love their curly rex coats. I only breed about 2 litters a year for friends.
