Interesting dynamic between these two. You can tell that they're not particularly close, since each is being polite and a bit flattering toward the other, but there's still an obvious mutual respect. Friendly rivals, not enemies.
"There is no way to grasp what a shallow, contemptible and hopelessly dishonest old hack Hubert Humphrey is until you've followed him around for a while."
@wheelinthesky300 Humphrey was extremely bitter at losing the nomination to McGovern. They tore each other apart during the primaries. This is why the left hated Humphrey, to call up and kiss Nixon's ass after the Democrats had been beat is just one more example.
Great to hear two leaders of opposing political parties actually show some legitimate respect for each other. Two men who ran against each other for president of the US are actually friends? There's a novel concept.
@shasanni That's true and a good point. I think there is a little bit of a difference there in that Bush and Clinton got to be friends after they ran against each other and both were out of public life. What amazes me about this tape is that both men are actively engaged in politics on opposite sides but maintain a friendship despite being political opponents.
At the end, Nixon cites Churchill's age to say to Hubert he could win someday... Humphrey died at age 66 from bladder cancer, never achieving his lifelong dream.
This rates as one of the premiere educational video clips from Top Rated Videos. Regretably, we will unlikely ever have two political opponents have such genuine respect for each other. Although both ran for the American Presidency, their candid and genuine conversation reveals the outstanding character of truly exceptional American's. Those that attack President Nixon will loose any argument after listening to this wonderful conversation. May God Bless our past non-partisan leaders.
@TopRatedVideos1 It's called being a statesman. Triple H and Tricky Dick, even with his shortcomings, loved this country. The current group of jackasses in D.C. don't. The schools they were taught told them that the US is responsible for the bad, not the respective leaders and citizens of their countries.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's a big international plot against the US; the world would like the power be moved from DC back to the older countries.
Nixon mentions at the end that Churchill became prime minister at 68 (which isn't true, he became prime minister at 65) and encourages Humphrey that he still has a chance. Ironically, Humphrey died at age 68...
LBJ gave Humphrey information from a wiretap that showed that Nixon's campaign was convincing the S. Vietnamese to hold back from the negotiations until Nixon got into office. Humphrey was never sure that Nixon himself was aware of the negotiations and didn't want to report an unsubstantiated claim even if he knew it could have gotten him elected President..
cooman456 is a 100% correct, and is obviously involved in politics, it's not a hate game like people believe it to be. YOU HAVE TO RESPECT AND WORK WITH THE PEOPLE THAT ARE ELECTED! IF YOU DON'T, THEN YOU WILL NEVER GET WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN HEARD OR AGKNOLEDGED!!!!

@RevengeOfTheMojoWire Damned straight....I just read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72...I wanted to know why Hunter S Thompson hated Hubert Humphrey so much. Here it is.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is very revealing. It reaffirmed my initial dislike of Hubert Humphrey, which I had gotten over since his death. But here, on this tape, it reminds me of what a sore loser, nasty and small man he could be. And how his personal ambition outweighed his dedication to any ideals he once carried.
Humphrey's "personal ambition outweighed his dedication to any ideals he once carried"?! Sounds like Nixon to me, why don't study his political career.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?1?! Humphrey was one of the most decent and noble men of politics. A true hero that risked his political future of his beliefs. He was honest to a tee, and that cost him the presidency three times. He would have been an amazing president, too bad he never got elected. And the mere fact that he's having a friendly conversation with Tricky Dick proves he's not a sore loser at all.
Hubert Humphrey saw in 1948 the change in demographics that would end the domination of the South on the Democratic party. Massive amounts of African-Americans had left the South, and they could vote where they went.
I just read the book on Lyndon Johnson as "Master of the Senate". It was an eye-opener on the Senate before and during Lyndon Johnson's tenure.
As for HHH's loss in 1968, one may blame Sirhan Sirhan.. With RFK still in the mix, Watergate would still be just a hotel.
That individual on the far right is, I think, Edmund Muskie, future Secretary of State for Jimmy Carter for some of 1980.

Oh come on! Two giants of supposedly 'opposing' parties getting on like they're in the SAME party, right after the Republicans flogged the Democrats?
This tape shows how little damned choice we really have. One party system.
