No wonder PanAM went out of business with all those empty seats... I still have my ticket delivered in 1969, but unfortunately the airline no longer exists...
wunderbar....there´s no need to discuss if the original soundtrack is better than this one. this is not a soundtrack for the movie. this is a videotrack for the music. and it works very very well!
Great effects aren't they ! The scene with the lady holding a tray was simply a camera bolted down onto the floor of a rotating room, while the lady just walks on the spot. The huge 'gerbil wheel' that you see Dave jogging round was an enormous structure that cost MGM a fortune to fund. It's basically 2 fairground carousels lying on their sides such their outer edges interlock. There's a narrow gap so that the camera can be fixed to the studio floor while the wheel spins around it !!!!
oh,.. I prefer the old soundtrack, more fit to the movie's pace and theme. It was "The Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss, I think. Kubrik chose classical music delibrately to impose more humanity to the technology.
I also agree with guusebumps original comment. Great music , great movie but they dont belong together. And I'm also a Model 500 fan...early stuff (No UFO's) etc
The purpose of Kubrik used classical music is to depict the CONTROVERSY of modern times (space travel) with classical times. If the music is changed to modern music, the controversy is gone, also the beauty of the scene.
No, Kubrik used classical music because he was worried that contemporary or "futuristic" music would sound dated. In 1968, "futuristic" music as envisioned by people at the time would have been Barberella style go-go guitar or something similiar, and a few years later would sound kind of silly.
However, Model 500, in the year 2008, is now old enough and established enough in its own right to be "classic", and therefore doesn't date the scene any more than Strauss.
I dont see what the next step to electronic music could be, binaural music maybe, but as for natural hearing bandwith we have allmost reached the limit.
What are you talking about? There's no beautiful juxtapositon...its well documented that Strauss and the famous scene ie the docking scene was pure serendipity..it was an album from his music club that came through the post, played it whilst in the editing suite and the editors looked at him in awe and said yes! thats all there is to it! :o

how did that "walk around the circle thing work"? artifical gravity produced by centripetal force/rotating cylinder component in the spacecraft?
redDL89 3 years ago
kubrick built huge elaborate rotating sets - the actress remained upright while the set and camera attached to it rotated.
achuter 3 years ago 4
no there was supposed to be no gravity and she was wearing velcro shoes that's why she was walking funny
