if the games aren't your style, you should check out the anime again. or maybe even read the books. not the manga. the actual books. they are very well written and explain a lot about dante's past.

Capcom developed two light novels in the Devil May Cry universe. Originally released alongside Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2 the novels act as preludes, with the epilogue of the novel leading into the opening scene of the game. the english ones came out in 06. those two novels were the first cannon prequels. then dmc3 and 4 were released. when that happened, the novels were ignored. so, technically, they are cannon.
