@dasstraat "Ubuntu can install within 5 minutes and run from an USB stick"
False, no OS can run from a USB stick. it needs a computer to run. Running an OS from a stick is pointless in this day and age of iPhones, iPods, iPads, online software, netbooks and laptops.
"Windows takes 5 minutes...."
My system boots Vista 64 bit Ultimate in 24 seconds....with a hard drive, let alone a SSD drive.
Starting a modern game like Call of Duty takes 5 seconds, Photoshop CS5 takes 2 seconds. Liar...
@vlptr Don't post comments ever again, please!Because I'm gonna go and pee from laughing!xD
You can always run any OS from a usb stick,as long it has enough space for the OS to be installed on it.You can actually install WinXP and almost ANY LINUX DISTRO to a USB stick.Running a OS on a USB stick is useful if you either have spare USB stick and want to have extra OS for your PC,or just to have a universal OS that is portable.Fuck iphone,I don't need that shit!I have my PSP and my phone!
@xan1242 Learn to read silly kid. I clearly said "it needs a computer to run", meaning that you can put any OS on it all you want, but unless you have a computer to stick it into, it's 100% useless. A USB stick doesn't run an OS, it's the combination of a computer AND that OS on the stick that runs the OS you fool.
Oh wow, you now you have Linux on your USB stick and each time when you want to use it outside a home, you need to look for a computer and have permission to use it. Useless!
On the other hand, anyone with a netbook/laptop can use his system ALWAYS! Not only that, it can even use a powerful desktop computer or server at home by using a remote connection at ANY time, while you're in the middle the countryside acting like a clown by knocking on doors begging to use their computer. Heck, I can even connect to my system anywhere in the world with my iPhone, try to beat that mr. USB stick.
"a USB stick is useful if you either have spare USB stick and want to have extra OS for your PC"
OMG, that's so outdated. I just use a hibernated image of Linux stored on my SSD drive and boot it in 2 seconds if I would like to use Linux, heck I can have multiple distros running at the same time plus Mac OS/X, my PC more than powerful enough to handle that. You live in the stone age kid! ha!ha!
@xan1242 "Fuck iphone,I don't need that shit!I have my PSP and my phone!"
OMG...listen to yourself..... "I have my PSP"....how old are you kid? 5? #LOL We're talking here about serious computing, not about a retarded Sony game computer for little kids...geesh!
@tallyhoman911 "the only issues with linux is compatibly other then that linux is amazing and so customizable "
The fact that it's not very compatible with soft- and hardware is something you just call a minor issue, for Pete's sake, people buy an OS just for that!! You don't buy an OS so that all you do is customizing it...idiot.
Lets face it Ubuntu is the simplest to use distro BUT even that shits fucking hard to set shit up in... Windows is perfectly fine for casual computer users
@DaedricLavaWhiskey hard to set up is relative to the end user. Any system that is preconfigured is obviously going to be easy if the user is not the one doing the leg work to get it working.
I completely agree, at least with your second statement. I used Linux for years and will not change back, but what seems so hard to admit for other Linux users is that if you only turn on your computer once in two weeks, or you use the same program all the time, then Windows IS the best choice for you.
@grafleinsdorf Actually I disagree. With Windows you have programs to manage. First if you are first booting, that takes a couple minutes, more if you install a few programs. And then you have to keep anti-virus software and anti-spyware software up to date. A lot of other non security programs have just that security updates for the holes they open up. And then you have the scans for malware and if you have real-time scanning, then that makes things take longer.
@AlbedoAtoned After you install a Linux distro (ex. Ubuntu) you are pretty much done. Ubuntu includes Firefox for internet and email if your email is web based, and it also includes thunderbird if you want an email client. And the repository system ensures that you usually never have to stray to find your desired software, it is incredibly easy in Ubuntu. Linux can be complicated, but Ubuntu proves it can also be the simplest system to set up especially compared to Windoze.
@DaedricLavaWhiskey Its ready for use straight after installation if anything windows not requires more configuration due to the fact that you need to install anti-virus software and update drivers.
When the GUI freezes up, you have to reboot the machine. Why would it freeze up? Unless you have some unfortunate piece of hardware or software I see no reason to why Windows GUI would freeze up. Windows 7 freeze up? That is close to not heard of.
Furthermore Ubuntu doesn't have Ctrl+Alt+Del function enabled no more, but I believe you can enable it again I just don't bother.. Never really liked that function that much anyway.
@Mantua64 You are incorrect on 2 points. GUI freezes are just as common on W7 as any of it's predecessors. And Ubuntu still has the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace enabled.
@runaway2me80 W7 doesn't freeze. Please bring me a bug report that shows such a pathetic hypothesis. And Ubuntu disabled Ctrl+Alt+Backspace around 9.10 or 9.04 and that has to be enabled through terminal, there is not even a GUI-part for that anymore. I even have my doubts whether gconfig-editor can do the trick if you don't like the terminal. And what Ubuntu are you using?! I just tried out 11.04 alpha and it doesn't have Crtl+Alt+Backspace. So that would make you incorrect on 2 points.
your right. theres still no reason to upgrade for xp. vista and 7 suck. no offence of course. they are just both really slow. still they can get viruses so mac is the winner :D well it is at least till u get norton anti-virus
The biggest difference between all operating systems is not so much the technology, because in the end. it's all 1s & 0s that are arranged differently. The biggest difference is really the philosophy of design & the implementation thereof which separates one OS from another. For this very reason, we see many different distros of Linux alone, because of different philosophies and ways of implementing them. All OSes have their good & bad points, & like any tool, you use the right one for the job.
i took XP off my netbook and put PC Linux on it cause Linux uses less system resources than Windows. I have plans to buy a full size laptop running windows 7 for gaming.
Apple is a controlled vendor all idea's that are not related like applications can go on there apple store if your 3rd party developer, you have no legal rights over apple as intuitive it is, it does what it does but costs a fortune, only apple has the choice on what it is said in apple land, i prefer Linux but use windows only because it does what i need it too, but in the end of the day i would prefer Linux.
No doubt linux is better then windows, when the next edition of linux evolves it might get more support in fufure from big vendors,
Even microsoft fails in the web developement whith it's "ie" series especially it's beta. it's behind on what web developement standards are. you maybe be thinking how is this related. everything free 3rd party always has had better idea's then microsoft,
you don't have to convince anyone about the superiority of Linux against the winshit u'll be better keeping it as a secret, coz no matter how hard you try or how logical your arguments might be, the winshit is an empty handed o.s from dumb asses to dumbed asses holes who knows everything about nothing.... error don' send, plz restart u.r comp, omg blue screen again, windows is scanning you computer and registering u,r files it'll take few minutes plz wait
windows cost more....I'm going to Linux. every time you have windows, the computer is cheap, but the software is more expensive to maintain. Linux you can get them cheep as well and then just get software updates that are either free or hardly cost anything at all. they usually always cost less than windows on any occasion. also, people who do use servers (like me when i day trade) don't have as high of a server costs. that's my problem with windows. i can take time to figure out a Linux.
@mrhazel You do know you can build your own PC right? I have 500 dollar desktop that kicks ass! Also you can torrent windows, though I hate torrenting, you still can.
@BigdogWitBigdog yeah my friend wanted to build a "hacintosh" but i am still reading up on my linux. when i build websites, i never use windows hosting. too proprietary. always used linux/nuix.
Try another distro dude ubuntu sucks is just a linux based os for windows users, i use Fedora the best OS ever, and i havent problems to run lots aplications
linux has the BEST development environment. large range of development tools, open source libraries make learning and developing software/web apps best.
thats why i use linux at work (have to use vmware because the sysadmin insists on all the boxes running windows 7.)
The only two reasons I found for Apple only allowing OSX on their machines is that 1st, it generates their revenue stream. If you like the OS, you need Apple Hardware. 2nd, which I do agree with them on is that if you limit the types of computers that can run your OS, you can provide more optimization since you know what it will run on versus windows which will run on any x86 architecture computer. And Linux can run on anything. x86, SPARC, ARM, AVR32, PowerPC, m68k, etc.
so true, i have ma lappy with Ubuntu or Mint depends, desktop with dual Xp and Ubuntu. linux repositorys are huge but not every single hardware is able to work under linux, like ma web cam... linux has amazing games like HoN Nexuiz Americas Army Open arena etc tec and alot of shitty ones forsure, and u can run allmost all game for win with wine, but the resolution will decrese alot, so i keep my windows only for 2 things Skype, and games like Aion Silrkoad and Allods, and some FPS like CA
I use linux, but on this particular issue you're right.Wine can't run a lot of stuff simply because its a "light" version of paid services like cedega or crossover.
What do you have on there that makes it freeze? Some of us don't have that problem. My reason for staying with Windows is software. I have an abundance of software I can already use. I don't have to purchase all new or hunt down crap that works..
Dude LINUX rules Windows and MAC suck nuts When Linux says FREE its FREE and hell you can hack it it can do almost everything windows can do also again FREE and Windows just wants your cash..
I can use all 3 of them anytime, but I prefer Linux because I can customize the OS to how I want to use it, instead of being stuck with the default Windows or Mac desktop.
I highly agree and found dual booting helps a lot since computer hard drives are getting bigger than needed lol and Linux, wine doesn't handle all games
xp was best windows.vista has only new gui and new dx.7 too.and in 7 is milion copied things from linux gui.windows is still slower.linux is still faster.I am ubuntu user.and my pc is shut down per 4 seconds.windows has still bigger hw requiments.your windows can use 1-2GB ram and is still slower.linux can use too.but is still same fast.why people what don´t play games use windows ? why people pay for it ? I think ubuntu is a lot easier for use than windows...LINUX FTW !!!...
@LiEnucksFAILS this is ntfs file system, because it works on windows. When I copy something on my linux (now I am gentoo used) I have 75MB/s copy speed. Why ? I use reiser4 filesystem.ntfs is slow windows bullshit.
well the inventor is from Finland. his name is Linus T. but he only makes the kernels. and not all distros get HIS version of it. ubuntu makes there own version
maybe you have some reason!!! I'm a mac user and I like a lot the hardware and you can choose nowadays what os run on it!! of course most of mac user like Os X but you ya the last chooice. I use Gnu/linux in one of mine macs and is rally awesome
One thing you left out that I believe, overall, makes Linux better than everything else is what it can run on. It can run on the lowest CPU, such as a Intel 386 to the biggest computer on earth, the Cray XT5. It works on smart phones, embedded processors (ARMs @ 300 MHz), even CUSTOM CPUs. I saw a guy who created a CPU out of 74HC series logic chips and ported the Linux kernel to it. Linux is the universal OS and that is why I love it so much. Its also free. Linux FTW!
I have been a computer engineer for 11 years and cannot confirm anything that you say. Sure your a computer fanatic but that means nothing. There are plenty of "computer fanatics" in this world but that doesnt mean anything. If you were a real computer genius or fanatic then you would be using Linux.
im really into building computers and stuff like that, and i want to be a computer engineer. and i would like some input from a actual computer engineer, like what college did u go to and how did u get started as a computer engineer?
@silentdreemz85 Haha a bit ignorant now are we "if you were a real computer genius or fanatic then you would be using Linux" I can tell you right away that there are many computer genius/fanatics that use Windows. Because one all work is on Linux so if you work with computers chances are you will most likely end up working with Windows. Two a lot of software/tools only work in Windows.
And really all OSes are stable enough to be used daily. So it all comes down to what can they do.
Its pronounced [Mac - Oh - es - ten]. X is the roman numeral for 10 and was the next OS in line from OS 9. If you are going to make a complaint about different operating systems please at lest pronounce the name correctly.
creating a very unstable and unsecure interface. The frame rate cannot keep up with Windows XP Windows Vista or window 7 if you are using a Webcam you are using Windows, or your video would come out blurry I have been a computer fanatic for many years KDE or the new interface GNOME, are like toys. And we can all make out otherwise unto we are blue in the face but it won't make it so. Windows is far superior to GNOME or KDE.
Me and my dad are massive pirates (high-five for being Canadian), that being said, we can't use Windows because we never know what we're downloading until we run it. Using Ubuntu, there's no anti-virus', firewalls, or virus-scanners slowing us down. Not to mention online gaming, with how often I'm playing online, I can't really afford to have a virus protector of any kind, not to mention that I've noticed Linux is faster and easier to install than Windows. Linux has more out of-the-box support.
ever since i got used to using the window resizing shortcuts in most linux window manager, I just rage anytime i have to use windows...
feels like i'm playing a first person shooter game when i have to resize window frames in windows or macos.
holding alt and right click dragging to resize a window is far more forgiving than having to aim for these 1px wide edges, macos is worse where you can only resize a window from the bottom right.
I use windows xp on ALL my systems because I game and my friends game on all my systems. Linux is a great os it just needs better driver support (he mentioned this). And to me, when I tried to use Linux is all seems so complicated to get one thing working because of driver issues and such. If linux could game just like windows and ran the same apps and had driver support that of windows then I would switch to linux anyday. But like this guy said, All oses will have probs.
Windows for me has problems locking up (same as this guy) but all in all does what I need it to. Its just about preference. Windows does everything I need it to while as mac and linux just dont for me. Ive tried linux, but I cant comment on mac like this guy because I have never tried it. But once again like this guy I dont like the way apple does things so i dont think I will ever own a mac because of that and their prices o.0
Everything windows has in it's new versions are always copies of Linux, Mac or so so. Linux can do everything! Windows might try and copy Linux 3D desktops in vista but will fail greatly cause Linux can do "anything". Windows will end up charging a few here and there. Remember Windows Blind? Stardock? LOL. Worse is windows is not as stable and crashes 5 times daily on average. Linux can go for months crashing only on users stupidity. Format 8gb SD on Windows? GL! Linux does it flawlessly! Pwned
I've actually found Windows to be very stable these days. If one has it crashing 5 times a day, there is most likely a buggy driver or duff hardware.
Linux is all good and noble. But what happens if I want to do some semi-professional or even casual audio and video production work? Answer: I can't do it with Linux. Yes there is Audacity, but it's very basic. Linux video editing packages are just awful, either they're very buggy, clunky, unfinished, or just plain broken.
Is that a Dell XPS Gen 1 Laptop I spy there? If so, keep it real!
Just rebuilt mine for my GF. 3.4ghz P4 Extreme, 2gigs DDR, 60gig 7200RPM drive, AND THE ATI RADEON 9800! LMAO! That laptop is still a beast in my book. If your pushing the 9800 make sure you open those extra pipelines up!
@BaradaNels actually that particular machine if I remember correctly was a dell precision m60 workstation with a 2 gig processor 2 gigs of ram 60 gig hdd and a nvidia quadro fx1000 128 meg graphics card if i remember all the specs correctly. And no I do not have that machine anymore.
if you are referring to a default install it depends on the distribution you are trying to install something like studio 64 or ubuntu studio to name a few come with some video editting software if your talking default ubuntu then no. Also the window movie maker is now a download if you are running on vista or windows 7 and not installed by default like it was on xp
@imfat008 Linux by default on the Ubuntu distro comes with Pitivi a video editor, use pitivi for basic editing. Anything beyond basic video editing, at the moment linux doesn't have any tools for that. So for editing 1080p use windows, for anything basic Linux can do the job. Linux for desktop is great but for laptop don't use it. Linux runs hotter than windows, for this reason I uninstalled ubuntu 10.10 and reinstalled vista instead. NO high end games, no high end video editor, runs hot
@sm4llp3n15 I have installed Ubuntu as my second partition and have done everything and anything to install Sony Vegas pro, is there any feasible way in making this happen at all????????????????????
adobe cs2 works with in wine there has been some progress with the newer cs3 and 4. As far as Movie editting is concerned there are many options some better than other for linux Kino, Cinelerra, Kdenlive, Stop-motion are just a few of them
I know about and have tried those Linux video production packages, not very impressed.
A colleague of mine, who is a real Linux FOSS evangelist and zealot. Who's always bashing proprietary software. He had to do some AV production work, out of frustration with what he found about the current status of Linux AV production software. He ended up buying a Mac.
For this time I use Ubuntu Linux :D

On the other hand, anyone with a netbook/laptop can use his system ALWAYS! Not only that, it can even use a powerful desktop computer or server at home by using a remote connection at ANY time, while you're in the middle the countryside acting like a clown by knocking on doors begging to use their computer. Heck, I can even connect to my system anywhere in the world with my iPhone, try to beat that mr. USB stick.

@xan1242
You live in the stone age kid! ha!ha!

I completely agree, at least with your second statement. I used Linux for years and will not change back, but what seems so hard to admit for other Linux users is that if you only turn on your computer once in two weeks, or you use the same program all the time, then Windows IS the best choice for you.
grafleinsdorf 9 months ago
@grafleinsdorf Actually I disagree. With Windows you have programs to manage. First if you are first booting, that takes a couple minutes, more if you install a few programs. And then you have to keep anti-virus software and anti-spyware software up to date. A lot of other non security programs have just that security updates for the holes they open up. And then you have the scans for malware and if you have real-time scanning, then that makes things take longer.
AlbedoAtoned 1 month ago
@AlbedoAtoned After you install a Linux distro (ex. Ubuntu) you are pretty much done. Ubuntu includes Firefox for internet and email if your email is web based, and it also includes thunderbird if you want an email client. And the repository system ensures that you usually never have to stray to find your desired software, it is incredibly easy in Ubuntu. Linux can be complicated, but Ubuntu proves it can also be the simplest system to set up especially compared to Windoze.
AlbedoAtoned 1 month ago
@DaedricLavaWhiskey Its ready for use straight after installation if anything windows not requires more configuration due to the fact that you need to install anti-virus software and update drivers.

Your problems with Windows:
When the GUI freezes up, you have to reboot the machine. Why would it freeze up? Unless you have some unfortunate piece of hardware or software I see no reason to why Windows GUI would freeze up. Windows 7 freeze up? That is close to not heard of.
Furthermore Ubuntu doesn't have Ctrl+Alt+Del function enabled no more, but I believe you can enable it again I just don't bother.. Never really liked that function that much anyway.
Mantua64 11 months ago
@Mantua64 You are incorrect on 2 points. GUI freezes are just as common on W7 as any of it's predecessors. And Ubuntu still has the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace enabled.
runaway2me80 10 months ago

All OSes have their good & bad points, & like any tool, you use the right one for the job.

windows cost more....I'm going to Linux. every time you have windows, the computer is cheap, but the software is more expensive to maintain.

Windows XP was based off of Windows 2000.

Windows 9x/ME was single user. They steered away from 9x because it didn't have as much security on networks(ie: the interwebs)
I run all versions of Windows and some versions of Linux. Preferring XP for gaming and Debian Linux for stability on my home networks server.

@alfamud Wine runs windows game like shit.
Assuming they actually run that is. Wine can run roughly 1/8th of windows games.
Just try getting The Sims games to run perfectly under wine. With the oddball exception of the sims 3, its not going to happen.
Empire Earth 3 won't run.
Simcity 3000 won't run.
Roller Coaster tycoon 3 won't run.
Grand Theft Auto 4 won't run perfectly.

One thing you left out that I believe, overall, makes Linux better than everything else is what it can run on. I saw a guy who created a CPU out of 74HC series logic chips and ported the Linux kernel to it. Linux is the universal OS and that is why I love it so much. Its also free. Linux FTW!

creating a very unstable and unsecure interface.

Pwned
cybervang 2 years ago
I've actually found Windows to be very stable these days. If one has it crashing 5 times a day, there is most likely a buggy driver or duff hardware.
Linux is all good and noble. But what happens if I want to do some semi-professional or even casual audio and video production work? Answer: I can't do it with Linux. Yes there is Audacity, but it's very basic. Linux video editing packages are just awful, either they're very buggy, clunky, unfinished, or just plain broken.

@imfat008 Linux by default on the Ubuntu distro comes with Pitivi a video editor, use pitivi for basic editing.
