@skydogj i love this song how it played right here right now; this is the song that inspired me to write my wolf book that you'll be seeing soon. and then all the fucking idiots will have to see what power really is where i'm at on this side.....
@socrates1818 There is no way you can say Derek Trucks only has it in the bank. That was one of the most exquisite slide solos I've ever heard. In fact, stick it on the Rock & Roll Circus version and you'd probably have the best live blues track ever recorded.
Incredible performance from all in the video..... As a guitarist, I think J.E. Davis would be quite impressed.... I know I am indeed.....Thanks for the post....!.
Jesse Ed certainly did a great job, but this is the blues - always open to new interpretation. Warren and Derek - and the Allman Brothers Band turn in a fine rendition here! Check out the Derek Trucks Band sometimes! They've been covering this one for a while. Great, great song! Fantastic version!
Thank you very much. I love Taj Mahal and The Allman Brothers Band's music, and I really like this particular song. Taj Mahal is one of my favorite singers out there, and I really appreciate Derek Truck's playing. I like how he is always so melodic in his soloing.
WOW.. I love this.loved it the 1st time i heard Taj sing it on the real thing, but this is great
i will say i never thought too much of derek before, BUT, having seen him in these ABB videos from Beacon St, he is fantastic, to me they are a coming out party for Derek..hail the new king
course i also think 1 of the best thing ever happened to ABB was Dickie leaving
I love the RnR Circus version and Jesse Ed Davis, but I wouldn't put this version down at all. Warren's not at his best here -- sounds like he's struggling to find his groove, although I like what he's trying to do. Now Derek -- holy sh*t. This is one minute of pure genius. Note choice, phrasing, intonation, GROOVE. Nobody else can do what he's doing here. We're all just arguing our own tastes here. These are mine. I'm damn glad skydogj posted this. It's one of my favorite YouTube videos ever.
Thanks for sharing this skydog. As far as music era is concerned we are fortunate that we have such great younger musicians keeping the old stuff alive and letting it evolve. All this who's better stuff is bullshit. Thanks again for posting!

What a Killer groove! Thanks Man! About the dickheads that like to argue you are so right they miss out on the spirit of great musicians having some fun together!
thanks for this kick ass jam session skydog, also want to say i am in the process of writing a song for these morons arguing below, im gonna call it "some people arent happy unless they are pissed off".. lol..
as a musician and music lover I just have to agree with ya my friend. and Socrates dude, this dudes play with they heart, carppy "Rock" bands like My Chemical Romances and shits like that are those who play with money.
all pure Blues and Rock players do it with the heart. listen to Warren Haynes man and the other guitar dude with the slide, if thats bank show me heart
Whoever thinks this version is better than the one on Rock and Roll Circus has got $hI# for brains - I have watched that one dozens of times and could not even get through this one once!
If you're too ignorant to understand what Jesse Ed Davis contributed to Taj Mahal's music you have no hope in ever truly appreciating this music. Just because a guitarist is "technically" more skilled, does not make them more creative, unique, or talented. Taj Mahal himself said that Jesse Ed Davis was a huuuugee part of his sound. Learn to show some respect and give credit where it's due. Thanks.
socrates1818 I have to disagree with you. Rock N Roll Circus is one of the sloppiest performances I've ever seen. I'm shocked it was ever released. Dickey Betts hasn't been relevant since 1972.
I also prefer the 1968 version to this one, but it's only because that was Taj in his prime. Love the Allmans though, and the Beacon show when Eric Clapton sat in last year was the tits
This in no way compares to The version on rock n roll circus. Jesse Ed had it in his soul, these dudes have it in the bank, no offense meant. Also can't listen to Allmans after Dickie split.
Good point, Socrates. It's really hard time, I wonder if the music world has anything more to offer than those wannabes. There is huge huge gap between guys like Jesse Ed Davis and these wannabies. Warren's sound got no vibe, nerve in it it's no soul, and derek is even worse. LESS IS MORE!
@arzachelek if nerve is in his soul, then its soul. douche commment again. warren has distinguished his own sound which might not appeal to closeminded people like you. Still is the current hardest working guitarist
@socrates1818 You tell 'em Socrates! These guys don't know the meaning of soul. There is nothing that compares to the raunchy sexual swagger of Taj in the R&RC version. Jesse was clearly in a parallel universe, and his guitar was a bit subdued, but I'd trade a thousand decibels of Trucks for a couple of minutes of Jesse scratching away. And don't forget the drums and bass on the R&RC. Really great.
It's a matter of taste. Some people have taste, others don't.
I've seen both of these guitarists, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease,Jesse Ed Who.Great clip, one of my fave Taj songs.Seen D Trucks band play this song, too.Thanx,a classic.Gonna see Bonnie and Taj in Sept.
Derek Trucks plays any damm guitar he wants. Come on you guys. Mere mortals putting way too much thought into this. This young man is a legend already...
Man am I lovin That PRS Amp Dereks playin through. IT gets so much more overdriven than his super reverb, and to my ears, is a heck of alot brighter. Warrens Great as usual. That Es-335 is a killer guitar. Nasty little PAFs in it.
I can't wait 'til Derek picks up a Les Paul. Duane took awhile to pick it up... I think you have to have a certain maturity and confidence to know you can handle The Paul. Derek's not quite there yet. He's getting better all the time though. I think he sounds best when sliding some slow country blues, lots of space and a relaxed playing style. I know I'm going to get hell for saying all this, Lord knows I think Derek is the one who Clapton is passing the torch to, he's making history already...
Derek is actually getting an LP. He played one at Encores for a few of these concerts. I believe its an original 59' burst.
I also agree with the Maturity with a LP. I have an SG as well and just can't get usd to LP's. Hopefully one of these days I'll pick one up tht suits me. haha
The Les Paul projects so much more than the SG and you have to be comfortable enough with your playing style to just blow the roof off some joint! Duane just knew when it was time for him and you'll notice that some of his later stuff was just plain ballsier and more free form with lots of power and plenty of space in between the notes. There's nobody out there right now with Derek's chops, but he still has that little hump to get over where he'll be playin' The Paul. God bless him...
LP's are defiently guitars you gotta get a feel for. Duane, if I'm not mistaken, played a few strats and an ES-335 before he got jhis goldtop(which was probably my favorite of the 3 he owned; His brown sunburst comes in at a close 2nd). Duane did use Dickey SG later on for his Slide work, which I don't blame him for. It incredibaly hard to play slide on and LP! haha
Did you ever think that the LP is not Dereks guitar of choice? If Derek isn't ready for a Les than nobody is ready for a Les! Shit , Clapton doesn't play one anymore and in your words he's passing the torch to Derek. Derek had more confidence playing at ten years old than any poster on this site.
Nod doubt brother, but Derek said in an interview that with this amp, there's no fighting for position between him and Warren. I'd consider buying one of these amps if they wern't so dern expensive. haha
Smoked like a locomotive is exactly right. I was in the second row for this night and this song -- plus Levon Helm joining in for "Ophelia," "The Weight" and "I Shall Be Released" -- were fabulous. I've probably seen 40 Allmans shows and this was among the best ever.
Dang awesome set. Played this song last night..pretty sweet.
