Most american cities (with all that suburban sprawl) are not suitable for trams, i don´t know why they keep wasting money....what about dense network of electric, hybrid or trolleybuses instead?
The light rail system has actually done very well, exceeding ridership expectations about 3-4 times over.
In Arizona, places like Central Avenue are highly trafficked during the morning/evening rush hour, Buses, that operate in normal traffic lanes would have been pointless.
Because the light rail operates in its own "lane" it allows it to pass other traffic by, Sure, a BRT project with its own dedicated lane could too, but the rail system works quite well so far.
