dude u r my friggen hero for makin this video thank u so so so so s so so so much i have that same guiatr and i also have a line six and never could quite get pinch harmonics so thank u
People, if you want a guitar to play PH`s don`t rely on a single coil guitar, i have a Fender ripoff, and squealies are difficult as all hell, get a LTD Viper-50 or something, beginner guitar at affordable price and super easy squealies..
@rOuGuErAvEn47 they do work on single coils, but it is reallyyyy hard to get decent sounding ones simply cuz single coils aren't really ment for playing hard rock ;)
thumbs up for the "you hold your pick a special way", i like that way of describing it, you're keepin it real with laymen's terms! Good video and awesome guitar!
Have you got any tips for pinching on the lower strings? I can get them on the higher strings and higher up the fret board, just can't seem to get the 3rd fret one on the low E
the technique is pretty much the same. maybe it takes a little more vibrato to make it sound nice. Think as if you are exaggerating the vibrato and that will be the kind of bending you need to make it sound nice.
@getlostupig u gotta like pick in towards the guiatar man it takes aloooot of practice but go down and tilt toward the body of the guitar and pick pretty hard hope i helped im in the process myself :)
Nice lesson man. May seem like an obvious question but can this be done using a thinner pick? I play a lot of rhythm, and prefer a thinner pick. A mate of mine reckons i need to be using a thicker plec to get this technique sorted. At the moment i use a .78mm pick....should i be using a thicker guage? any advice appreciated
it doesn't really matter what size pick you use. Hell you can do pinches without one if you have the technique down. What is making the harmonic is your thumb grazing the string not your pick.
so I posted this same question on a different PH video but a lot of times I never get a response so I'll try here as well. Do the pinch harmonics move when you push a different fret on the same string? (changing the length of the vibration). For Example, if I am on the 5th String 5th Fret I have a PH right in front of one of my pickups. Would I have to move my picking hand if I tried a different fret? I've experimented a lot but it's still hard to tell.
well your picking hand doesn't have to change. Changing where you pick relative to the humbuckers will change the pitch of the squeal. You sorta have to find that "sweet spot" somewhere in between the humbuckers that give you that pitch you want. So to answer the question, yes and no. Change the picking hand postion as you move higher or lower on the frets might change the pitch a little bit but isn't necessary. You can keep picking the same place on different frets and strings.
@ChromeFang Strings have what are known as node points and if you go up and down the string while fretting a note and initiating the pinch harmonic, the pitch will change slightly. It's basically up to you and your guitar where the node points are going to be because it depends on what kind of strings you have on the guitar and the configuration of your pickups/etc. But if you're using a guitar that has two humbucking pickups installed, you should try using the bridge pickup for best results.
Some other tips i would like to give out to young guitar players on pinch harmonics is having certain pickups like EMGs Seymour Duncan Or Dimarzio really help deliver a good pinch harmonic. also a line 6 or a krank amp is also helpful. so basicly the 2 things you need to have for pinch harmonics are.
dude, i turn up the gain, (like u said) and the harmonics come out worse. do u have any other settings i could use, i know how to do them, but they come out sounding realy bad.
lol i hate you for having that Zakk Wylde Epiphone, i have a sticker behind my B.C. Rich Warlock remembering me every day that ill get your guitar one day xD.. also btw i have it now xD
you have to put the gain on your amp try getting a high out put hum bucker and a high gain amp or distortion but the most important is just hold your pick by curling up your index finger and holding it with the thumb on top then just pick the note at the same time as you scrape your the side of your thumb accros the string than with your other hand fret a note and vibrato it or kind of rock your finger back and fourth a little
yes you can but if you're wanting to do pinch harmonics, then you're probably playing an electric. use a pick, and do it. not using a pick doesn't make you cool or anything.
Well, I was going to be skeptical whether or not to trust this video, but the fact that you like mastodon seals the deal, not to mention I have that shirt.
its an epiphone or whatever cause doesnt the ZW one have a black bottom part? (where the strings end) and his is gold.. epiphones are gold... anyway i dont like the guitar lmao im a Schecter fan xP (c-1 ATX)
i just need to know this for the song Omerta by Lamb of God. my band's playing at a gig this weekend and thats the only thing stopping me from playing it. =(
not true, if the string gauge is mega high, then they wont pull off well and the pitch doesnt really translate, your best off finding the right gauge strings for the tunings you use.
if pinching doesnt work for you try just hitting the strings closer to the bridge where the tension is highest to create artificial harmonics. it does the job IMO.
never say that try touching with your first finger the strings very soft when you get the sound you will bend the string thats a easy way more distortion better will sound

I kinda understand i mean ive had my guitar for what? 2 months [since christmas] and play a few songs but anyways, when ur doing pinches how much of the tip of ur pick should be showing, i never get it right, when i skin it with my thumb it cancles it and makes it dull.
Make sure you're on your treble pickup, usually the last one (for hum's), then when you pick, touch the string with the flesh of the side of your thumb touch the string almost instantly, but make sure its over your bottom pickup, but make sure your using your bottom pickup... (or whichever is your treble)
