Queen had to repair the tapes they were using at one point. The tapes used for Bohemian Rhapsody became so thinned out because of the constant rewinding & fast forwarding, and recording parts over and over again.

I think he means they did stuff to the recordings to make them sound better. But it wasn't something that only Queen did, almost everyone did it and still does. Plus whenever Queen played live, they would allow backing tracks to play for the Opera section because it was impossible to do live. It wasnt like they pretended it was all them.
