I did this for years and as soon as i stopped following this method i became doomed. One day i took the fan away from infront of it and left my room for 5 minutes with my xbox still running.I came back to the xbox and it had one red ring,then all of a sudden it had 2,then 3,then all for a second later. so i hurried and put the blocked of ice next to it and the fan behind that. i was so sure it was gonna work and everything would be fine. sadly my xbox buddy then randomly combusted... =( THE END

That's pretty cool! However, I can do one better that's cheaper and works great.

Just put the 360 in a well ventilated area. No overheating! For an added bonus, use the feature that lets you copy the contents of a disc game to your HDD so you can play from the HDD instead of the disc. No disc drive running while you play means less noise and less heat! And you didn't spend even a small amount of money on a fan, which means more money for games.

@Tech4U247 Changing the DVD drives would have been great for the slim, but the install to HDD is great for people with older consoles who don't want to buy a new one. Plus, installing to the HDD will always make the game load a little bit faster; HDD read times are always faster than an optical disc drive.

Yeah but it is really rare for The slim to red dot unless it is over heating i got the red dot of death because the HDD was not plug in all the way... if the console detects something is not running right or detects a problem then it automatically shuts down THUS leaving the red dot behind most of the time you can just restart it

one of the best things to do, which is one thing i did is take off the bottom grey panel (air intakes from there) and the chances are there will be alot of dust inside there... do this every couple of months or so and try to make sure as much air can get in as possible

@cull38464 Either buy a 360 with a Jasper mobo, or get a Slim. Because the ones with the Jasper mobos are just as good as the Slim (Failure rate wise) only $150 cheaper. The only down side to the older model Jasper 360s is the fans are much louder than the Slims and their design isn't as sleek. I've had 3 Elites and they all got rrod, but once I got switched to the Arcade Model with the Jasper motherboard I haven't had a single problem. And I've had it for about a year and a half.

@marticent oh dear, you havent got a clue how the xbox rrod's. its not anything slightly to do with the gpu touching the heatsink. and no, thermal paste doesnt dry up, it goes into a solid state when cold but never dries up. the xbox gets rrod due to the heat making the mobo flex and with all the heat numerous times causes weakness in the cold solder, so that cracks and there for the gpu isnt connected to the xbox correctly, so cannot work, (i kno coz i repair them as my job, evry day

How does this cool it? a fan does not produce "cool" air it only blows the surrounding air, so basically when the xbox releases hot air from those vents, the fan is just pushing it back to the console therefore not giving it any cool air.
