@SerterSerter I'm so sorry it took me this long to see your question -- Brit Gain J-2000 with 4x12 GB Green 25's! And a Colorful Wah on full, all the time.
@MichaelAlahouzos Much obliged! I managed to get a similar tone with a boss DS-2 on full gain and tone, leading into a clean boosting SD-1, and using a Behringer V-Tone Bass Driver as a preamp, emulating a bass tube amp.
I don't usually comment on youtube videos, but I had to in this case. It's a perfect cover, and you're a badass guitarist, but I think you know that by now. Really, I just wanted to thank you for rocking the fuck out. Whenever most people perform on youtube, they sit still and play for the camera, which is perfect for learning and all, but sometimes I just want see someone playing wildly with no concern for anything besides rocking as hard and as well as physically possible.

Just a wonderful job, very well done! Any chance I could get you to send me / upload (perhaps to customtone) your X3 Live tone(s)? I understand much of your sound comes from your excellent customized guitar, but I have an X3 Live and your tone settings would still be a great place to start.
Yea, this is pretty fucking stupendous. Standout instrumentalist from that compilation video, many props! Also, inspired me to pull out my Pod and start drafting Greenwood patches... 'bout damn time I built proper sounds for this song.
Hey, it's the "Legs Kid" on the Paranoid Android compilation video ;) I had to hit and miss a few before I found your video, but it was well worth it. Great job :)

@fishbone7100 Hey! It's called Random S&H on the Pod X3 Live. Check out @danakerman 's comment below, he/she has great info on how to get Johnny's version of that sound. Thanks!
Beautiful guitar, make sure you label the guitar at the antilosta website just in case you loose it one day, I have all my valuables labeled with antilosta and recently had an expensive camera returned back to me after having lost it away from home in one of my gigs.
This is a MIM Standard originally right? It sounds amazing, fantastic playing also!
If you were to put in the Lace Sensor Telecaster pickups would it sound similar to this? They say on the Lace website that they recreate the Tele Plus sound.
@freeflow18 Hi! I'm not sure... that could just be ad speak in order to make the sale. I haven't heard anything about it though, so possibly it'll recreate the sound! I have doubts though.
@MichaelAlahouzos Thank you! I've heard that the normal blue and red duallys are the exact same or nearly similar to these vintage ones that you use. You can get them from the Lace website. I think I heard that from the TDPRI Tele forum, the biggest Tele one on the internet. I will eventually learn this on guitar. I can play it all the way through on drums. Great song, love it!
@freeflow18 The current Lace Sensors are pretty much identical to the "Fender" Lace Sensors. You can buy dually reds on ebay for about $80-90, and the Blue for about $65.
@danakerman Thanks! I have a MIM Standard in Blue with Custom Shop Fender Texas Specials which I will get fitted soon. Can't wait to see what they sound like!
HEy dude. where'd you find the bridge piece for the conversion? I was thinking about getting a single coiled sized humbucker but i was wondering if there was a bridge peice that would fit a full size humbucker like the telecaster plus from the 90s.
@SerterSerter Yes, it's a ton of space echo and a harmonizer... though the harmonizer doesn't really ring out when playing more than one string. I hope this helps!!
@MichaelAlahouzos Heya, something completely digital I guess. Also the really ethereal parts around 1:30, what are you using then besides the pickup? It's obvious atleast that you're using the expression pedal as a volume control.
@MichaelAlahouzos Random S&H means Random Sample & Hold. Sample/Hold is a setting on synthesizers, where the oscillator wave was randomly sampled at different filter settings, creating weird bleeps and blips. This is partly how R2D2 from Star Wars was voiced. Johnny DOESN'T use that. He uses a DOD 440 filter live, which is just an auto-wah. In the studio he used a Mutron Mutator and fed the output back into the machine to get it "double-filtered"
@Fma1416 Dude, I have no idea! I think I was just pushing the pickups to the limit with some fast picking and the whole thing feedbacked. Or something.
I'm also a lefty and i was thinking about getting a telecaster standard and customising it to look like a tele plus, preferably jonnys model. So far I know i'm going to relic it, put blue lace sensor pickup in the neck, then two red lace sensor in the bridge forming a humbucker. I was going to give it a blueburst finish aswell, is there anything else you could reccomend for me to do to help me out?
the installation is the thing that is cost you. you're going to either have to know how to install one with the wiring, or if your like me and unwilling to learn you can pay $60. a guy did it for me in about an hour for 60, so whatever. it was quick and perfectly done so i was happy.
I just read that supposedly, Jonny's modded Telecaster (the one that was originally an American Standard Tele or some such thing) actually has the newer Lace Sensor pickups in it, but I'm not too sure how true that is.
@joeypaint have a tech/or luthier route the body where the bridge pickup is to make room for the humbucker. Then its a matter of uninstalling the bridge pickup and removing its wiring and connections to the pots and switches.
Same goes for neck except you don't need to route it for the new single-coil (unless it won't fit).
Now you could also use stacked single-coils that produce a humbucker sound so that you don't have to route the bridge.
you know what's funny? i was just listening to paranoid android right before i put this video on, so i checked if i hadn't turned of the music when this started. xD
Oh, I see. I didn't know I did that. I think it's just for balance so I can swing my leg back up to hit the pedalboard while maintaining balance. That's harder to do that fast from a normal standing position.
he actually used a turbo rat during the bends and a marshall shredmaster for the rest of his career. He also used a Fender Deluxe 85 for dirty tones and an AC30 for clean tones.
@MichaelAlahouzos Johnny doesn't use a S&H generator in the song. The studio version uses a Mutron Mutator functioning as an auto wah with a wide sweep. The outgoing signal was fed back into the Mutator to filter again. Live, Johnny simply goes into a DOD440 autowah/filter. The kill switch simply creates the transients that trigger the auto-wah.
Do you reckon that, keeping to the specs you did, it'd be possible to wire it so all the pickups are on when the switch is in the middle position, rather than the neck?
Excellent! I've been planning on getting a Standard Tele and modding it to make it a Tele Plus for a while now, but watching this made me want to add that part on, just because of how amazing it sounds.
I absolutely love this video...your playing, your moves and especially the guitar :P
but could u tell me what effects exactly ur using? I know you've got the fancy board-thing going on but what is it? chorus, delay? cheers, and please post some moaaar :]
hey, i seriously love what you've done to this guitar!! can i just ask, i have a MIM tele too, would you ever consider doing it to someone elses guitar? if so how much? seriously awesome man!!!!
Dude I envy you. It seems like your guitar sounds exactly like the guitar I am looking for and haven't found yet. Could you do a video about "her" if you built an identical guitar again? That would be so nice! Yeah and btw you could sell it to me.... if 400 bucks are enough :D (just joking ;) )
Hey, thanks! Absolutely I can tell you: I installed a kill switch (the red button between the tone and volume pots) in order to achieve the sound. You can find the exact same one from Radioshack.
What you do is have the ground and the main 'make' a connection when the button is pushed. That shorts the signal. So it's not so much breaking a connection as it is making one (otherwise you'll get harsh *pop* noises like you just plugged in.)
Thanks, zipdoa! (I remember your name, it's like my fiancee's name, Diep "Zip" Dao.) I successfully sold the guitar and just got in all the parts to make another. After that, two more coming. Lots to do!
It's a random S&H (whatever that means!) that picks up high and low tones and plays them at random intervals. If I crank up the speed, it sounds like that. Nigel Godrich is using something like it at the end (those laser sounds are similar) but I use it (set to random) at the end of the song to mask my awful playing of the song's coda. :)
I'm making a tele plus with a lace sensor pick-up and i'll install the kill-switch. I am also getting the following pedals that Jonny greenwood uses from Radiohead: Boss SD1, ashdown envelope filter (Dod 440), Digitech whammmy, Roland space echo but re-made by Boss because the roland one is very old, Boss RV3 and i'm also looking for a mutator but cant get one anywhere.
Oh well, I'm making a tele plus but I'm putting in a red-blue dually in the bridge instead. I might install a killswitch too. And are all of those sweet effects coming from that line 6?
I'm pretty sure the output of the recent red duallys is a lot higher than you think. On musician's friend, it gives the specs of one red sensor instead of the whole humbucker. i might be wrong. lol.
nice man...i wonder why no one has commented on the tone? makes me want to ditch my pedalboard for one of those pod x3 lives.
anyway, i used to have a tele plus til it got stolen...would want to own one again but they're like $2k on ebay now. I remember buying it for all of $600 back in the day.
Hey! The Pod X3 Live is great and you can custom make any tone you want - like I did here - but the electronics, wiring and pickups of the Tele Plus or Tele Plus mods is the real secret to getting the tone. It's a night and day difference, so see if you can make one of your own! It's the best way to spend a $1,000 that's lying around.
Hey so I saw this video and I'm interested in possibly doing this to my Telecaster. You've inspired me lol. Basically though, I was wondering if you could perhaps put up some more videos showcasing what all the modifications do to the sound, perhaps minus the amazing pedal. Some Bends-era stuff maybe? I don't want to hassle you but I'd really like to see more of what this guitar is all about.
OK! I filmed a video of me playing "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse but I haven't posted it yet. I'll get on some other songs... maybe something that utilizes the clean tone of the guitar better than The Bends would. (A lot of that clean tone is Thom on that record.) Maybe 2+2=5 or Nude?
This is great, I am a Muse fan too. Nude would be a perfect showcase for the clean sound (with the little clicky part), and I was thinking maybe a Bends-era distortion song (Just, My Iron Lung, Electioneering even with killswitch?). Just something that showcases the solo tone a little more clearly than this video (what with all the incredible effects you got on it). It's up to you though, really.
Thanks for watching. I'm certain that Jonny Greenwood actually uses a stock American Telecaster neck. Can you show me the Strat neck on his Tele Plus and Tele Plus custom conversion (like this one) that your talking about? I don't believe it exists.
really good man

Do you reckon that, keeping to the specs you did, it'd be possible to wire it so all the pickups are on when the switch is in the middle position, rather than the neck?
AToxicOrange 2 years ago
Yes!
MichaelAlahouzos 2 years ago
Excellent! I've been planning on getting a Standard Tele and modding it to make it a Tele Plus for a while now, but watching this made me want to add that part on, just because of how amazing it sounds.

what is that pedal your using and how much is it??

Ahahahah I HATE YOU!!!!! XD Very very good!! What did you use for that sound at the end?? That Mario Bros sound.. XD What is that?

That distortion that comes on at 0:36 sounds immense. The sounds around the 1:00 mark are awesome too, nice work!

Guitar is awesome, Setup is awesome. But I give the props to your showmanship. I only saw your feet, but they blew my mind!
akaDelusionalelGuero 2 years ago 2
Dude I envy you. It seems like your guitar sounds exactly like the guitar I am looking for and haven't found yet. Could you do a video about "her" if you built an identical guitar again? That would be so nice! Yeah and btw you could sell it to me.... if 400 bucks are enough :D (just joking ;) )
musicniklas 2 years ago
awesome!!
can u tell me how did u make it in 3:36??
hulashit 2 years ago
Hey, thanks! Absolutely I can tell you: I installed a kill switch (the red button between the tone and volume pots) in order to achieve the sound. You can find the exact same one from Radioshack.
What you do is have the ground and the main 'make' a connection when the button is pushed. That shorts the signal. So it's not so much breaking a connection as it is making one (otherwise you'll get harsh *pop* noises like you just plugged in.)
MichaelAlahouzos 2 years ago
so u removed the mini-switch betweens the tone and volume pots on tele plus?
hulashit 2 years ago
Great video once again... this guitar would sound great on my Fender Deluxe 85 =) Did you manage to sell the guitar?
zipdoa 2 years ago
Thanks, zipdoa! (I remember your name, it's like my fiancee's name, Diep "Zip" Dao.) I successfully sold the guitar and just got in all the parts to make another. After that, two more coming. Lots to do!

Man, awesome cover.....
your amazing!
I love your telecaster plus...
I want a kill switch!

what effect uses all those weird space noises at the end
RxAxDxIxOxHxExAxD 3 years ago
It's a random S&H (whatever that means!) that picks up high and low tones and plays them at random intervals. If I crank up the speed, it sounds like that. Nigel Godrich is using something like it at the end (those laser sounds are similar) but I use it (set to random) at the end of the song to mask my awful playing of the song's coda. :)
MichaelAlahouzos 3 years ago
I'm making a tele plus with a lace sensor pick-up and i'll install the kill-switch. I am also getting the following pedals that Jonny greenwood uses from Radiohead: Boss SD1, ashdown envelope filter (Dod 440), Digitech whammmy, Roland space echo but re-made by Boss because the roland one is very old, Boss RV3 and i'm also looking for a mutator but cant get one anywhere.
RxAxDxIxOxHxExAxD 3 years ago
Oh well, I'm making a tele plus but I'm putting in a red-blue dually in the bridge instead. I might install a killswitch too. And are all of those sweet effects coming from that line 6?
museIKplox 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure the output of the recent red duallys is a lot higher than you think. On musician's friend, it gives the specs of one red sensor instead of the whole humbucker. i might be wrong. lol.
museIKplox 3 years ago
those effects... are... amazing.
ernzoa 3 years ago
Your distortion is just... so incredibly sick... I would kill for this sound :O
ElWeasle 3 years ago 2
nice man...i wonder why no one has commented on the tone? makes me want to ditch my pedalboard for one of those pod x3 lives.
anyway, i used to have a tele plus til it got stolen...would want to own one again but they're like $2k on ebay now. I remember buying it for all of $600 back in the day.
mooger32 3 years ago
MichaelAlahouzos 3 years ago
Hey so I saw this video and I'm interested in possibly doing this to my Telecaster. You've inspired me lol. Basically though, I was wondering if you could perhaps put up some more videos showcasing what all the modifications do to the sound, perhaps minus the amazing pedal. Some Bends-era stuff maybe? I don't want to hassle you but I'd really like to see more of what this guitar is all about.
farfle10 3 years ago
MichaelAlahouzos 3 years ago
This is great, I am a Muse fan too. Nude would be a perfect showcase for the clean sound (with the little clicky part), and I was thinking maybe a Bends-era distortion song (Just, My Iron Lung, Electioneering even with killswitch?). Just something that showcases the solo tone a little more clearly than this video (what with all the incredible effects you got on it). It's up to you though, really.
farfle10 3 years ago
Wow man this is incredible. I want one so bad.
farfle10 3 years ago
if it is custom why didnt u get it like radiohead has it with a strat headstock
theboner123 3 years ago
Thanks for watching. I'm certain that Jonny Greenwood actually uses a stock American Telecaster neck. Can you show me the Strat neck on his Tele Plus and Tele Plus custom conversion (like this one) that your talking about? I don't believe it exists.
MichaelAlahouzos 3 years ago
'Cause then it wouldn't be custom to him, it'd be custom to Radiohead :/
ElWeasle 3 years ago
hey do u mind if i ask where u got the bridge and saddles for the guitar. it was just a standard b4 u modded it right?
